I guess what I can't get through my head is...

Is pain acceptable even if it is ignorable?
That is a good question Joonie!  When you find an answer, let me know

For me, my pain varies day to day and many things affect it.  I know when I'm PMS'ing, I can count on my pain being higher.  If I'm emotionally sad, my pain can be higher.  For me, i know that I'm going to have a certain level of pain everyday.  Some days, I deal with it better than other days.

PHats

Me thinks that if you have to concentrate on ignoring pain you're dealing with too much pain.
Thus, there's too much to ignore and thus not acceptable.
I think if it's constant....it needs to be addressed.Sometimes if my pain isn't so bad, I can ignore it. Then sometimes when it's awful there is no ignoring it even with pain meds. OR IF I am on a mission to do something....then I ignore it and push on but then the next couple of days (because of over doing it) I can't ignore it and I have to rest and take pain meds.
It's all very confusing and the part that I can't stand is I never know how I going to feel and can't really make plans because I don't feel well.
Joonie this is a good question. For me I can live with a little bit of pain daily, I have learned it is something I am always going to have.  I also feel that when the pain does get worse then there is a possiblity there is something wrong then I go to see the Dr. My hands for instance are, because I use them daily of course,   very very warm  and they get swollen and the joints swell, it is something that I am going to have to live with because I use my hands everyday so what can you do, you learn to tolerate what you can and keep going.

NOOO, why should any pain be acceptable? I understand tho, what you're trying to say.
That most of us have pain and we've learned to ignore it ... to a certain extent or can still do things.. like i'm hurting right .now, , my wrists hurt, the weathers colder.

Yet, i'm also a bit manic, lol, ie talkative... so to me its all about
BALANCE!!.... KEY WORD.....

BALANCE

What that means, is to do no more then a tiny bit.. which means i get like 15 mins of puter time versus an hr to 3, LOL.. it means ignoring other stuff..
I'm lucky I have a helper, so I never do the dishes, or floors, or cleaning.. hmm
at all, nothing anymore, LOL  bc that would lead to MAJOR PAIN,  i absolutely couldnt ignore and would put me, in bed, for days..

right now, i'm not even decorating, which i want to..

Also note, I'm weaning myself off the Vicodin  (thur is my Rhems day, so 2 more days or less, until i get a new pain med!).. Vicodin made me horribly depressed.. not good in a bipolar person , who already struggles w/ it.

So no pain is not acceptable... its limiting yourself.. finding what you can do.. w/o
producing a flare, or being laid up the next day..

ps: I loved your pain chart, and don't go by the faces, but what the descriptions said.

So maybe pain isn't acceptable but.. BUT something we have to learn to deal w/... and learn not to overdo.. what our OWN limitations are..
Whats acceptable for yourself and whats not?
Adapt.. Resources.. BAlance..
Ok... how about this... is pain that can be ignored still call for pain meds? Not IBU or Aleve, but Darvacet or vicodin? What about pain that starts out as highly annoying.....

And then something happens in your day that's SO demanding that you're FORCED to ignore it and deal with the situation at hand.

Then when you get done, you feel like you're blind cause you hurt twice as bad as before it all started?

(I'm gonna get yelled at for that one, aren't I?)
Joonie I don't take anything stronger then the prescribed version of Aleve if possible I just don't want to.  Pa is progressing up my spine and down my neck, while the joints in my hands are swelling but I am able to handle what pain I get and I can do it without the heavier pain meds.  To me I can tolerate anything below say a 7, but that is me.  Everyone is different in how they deal with pain.  I was at a 10( on the pain chart) for too long now I am averaging 3-4 I think that is great for me.  I still do what I can but I also learn to try not to over do it, but if pain does get real bad and starts progressing up the chart yes I go see the dr and see what we can do for me to get rid of the pain.Shame on you Katie

Meme - I understand what you are saying. I am the same way. I am just trying to figure it all out. I do not like taking pain meds, and my RD gave me pain meds with caffiene in them so they do not make me sleepy, but they do not do much for my really bad pain until I get to the 3rd dose which is the maximum I am to take.

I do not really know much about pain meds, most I ever took for my pain even when it was a 10 on the pain scale chart, before asking for pain meds, was IBU or Aleve. And let me tell you that was like drinking water.

Oh well... I guess I am done with the pain med topic. Now I am on to the pain topic LOL, then you're one of those people who have a really high pain tolerance level!

I easily drown 5 motrin... 1,000 mgs, just to help a tiny bit..

I HAVE to have real PAIN meds..  vicodin, valium, darvocet, etc.. and stuff for migraines..

and i don't get any dr giving you pain meds w/ caffine.. tho.. tho.. caffine does help a bit w/ migraines, esp taken w/ some meds.. bc pills anyone?

no noo not birth control, lol

I hate pain, can't stand it, have a very very low threshold... and i'll take anything..
I totally get Heath Ledgers death... still very sad about it.. :(

Caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant. It relaxes muscle contractions in blood vessels to improve blood flow.
