orencia? | Arthritis Information

so i heard about this on the tv - once a month 30 minute IV.... hm.

i'm on enbrel now but these shots are really starting to bother me. i dont like giving them to myself and i have a hard time remembering the right days. has anyone ever used orencia? any thoughts?Orencia has a lot more side effects than drugs like enbrel, humira, remicade. It is more often used as a more "last resort" type of medication. It does work for some people, and very well, but typically they have tried all the other medications first. For some people, once starting orencia, they cannot go backwards on the med line (humira, enbrel, etc)

The same is true for Rituxan, you can google some more if you'd like. :)
thanks so much for the information.I take Orencia...have since Oct. As for as side effects, I have had none. My dr. said that I can go back to others meds if necessary-I asked that right off since I am still fairly young RA wise and didn't want to be totally out of options. Oh! Good!!!!!!!!

You know, I was wondering about that since they started running the commercials for it....

All of my knowledge about Orencia and Rituxan is "old" :-D
On biologics, I started with Enbrel and I hated those injections too.  They seemed to get worse as each week went by.  Then I did Rituxan and I have to say, getting an infusion is a lot easier for me, even the long ones like Rituxan.  Also way more expensive, but a lot easier on me.  Unfortunately it didn't do anything to improve my RA, so in April I'm going to try Orencia. It is harder to switch back to other meds. There is a greater chance of an allergic reaction. Basically, you will need to be monitored more closely.

Orencia has helped me quite a bit. Most of my problem areas are tons better. I do still have a hard time with my rt. shoulder, neck, and sternum. RD is not happy about that but my knees, elbows, and hands look great.

orencia and rituxan are not yet approved for use in AS.

how is the enbrel working for you?  if it is working I would be relunctant to rock the boat..the grass isn't always greener.
i know it hasnt been approved for AS but i'm just looking around - i'm hoping that maybe they discover that it can work for AS too .. haha..

the enbrel was working very well but these damn injections are starting to really wear me down. also, lately the enbrel hasn't been helping much. my ankles have started to swell again, all of my joints in my hands are starting to flare too. this has been going on too long to just be a flare up, so i dont know. maybe it's not working so well anymore.

blah.Isabel,

Are you using the SureClick?  I find it very easy to use and virtually pain free when injecting in the stomach.
Kweenb - I tried the SureClick but my doctor told me to inject into my leg. That was so painful. Now I use the kind that you have to mix yourself. That isn't that painful, its just annoying. In the stomach isnt bad though? Maybe i'll try that with the SureClick... thanks.
