Merry Wednesday Everyone, Hope everything is hunky dory in your worlds.

Question: Flies, best way to kill em? I have a swatter and that just won't do. We had lots last year and since the weather here is warming up (san joaquin valley, ca) we already have a kazillion, yes a kazillion.  I had my melathion (sp) bug spray out this morning and it doesn't seem to be doing anything to them. I also have a fly catcher jar I need to set up, but that really won't get the mass murder I'm looking for. And I have to be careful because of my dog and cats. OMG, it's like the Amitiville Horror. Suggestions please. Fruit flys and knats have been a huge problem here this winter as well.
What's the source?  I had problems with flies last year and it was the city garbage cans.  Clean and move them it and all was 'clean'.Feed them our RA meds?  Flypaper? "but that really won't get the mass murder I'm looking for"

Well THAT'S not something you read every day. LOL

Set up some poison fruit for them? I have no idea. Are they in the house? Or the yard?

3 years ago we were at a RV site on a goat and llama farm and yes, the flies were horrendous.  Loved having the goats and llamas around but not the flies.  We went to the farm supply store and bought several containers that has a liquid in them and hung them from the trees.  They worked like a charm.  Don't remember the name of the containers but I'm sure any farm supply store has them. Gazillions of dead flies. Happy hunting.  Lindy

Pips right....they can't be their if they have no food source.  Find out what it is and get riid of it.  Your problem will be solved.

There ya go!!!
Fly paper - Or - I can't remeber what it's called but farmers use it -you would find it a hardware store just ask a sales person for the blue crystals in a can that kills flys.
The farmers would sprinkle it in a barn at night and in the morning just sweep them up .

We take this with us camping and put containers around our site and the flys are attracted to this stuff they eat it and then they die. And can't bother us.

They haven't invaded inside the home as of yet and I'm not gonna let it get to that point. It's the manure my husband put down last weekend! and they are horseflys. Good grief, what a mess. I've been out there turning over the soil and picking up the few dog piles that are out there. I can almost hear them laughing at me. Now I'm on a mission. Those little *&@#*!* are not gonna drive us nuts this summer. I do have a new client starting tomorrow that lives on a ranch and has breakfast every morning with his farming buddies, so I'll ask them what they use. I just have never seen sooo many so early in the year. And, I haven't seen but a few bees so far, so that's odd to me. Crazy creepy.Hey there. Your topic is not as OT as you think. Please view this page and read up on malathion. It is not good for your RA.

Really i had good luck with the Raid fogger spray and the vacum cleaner. Used to date a pest control owner he said seven dust was good but vacuming brings the eggs up to the carpet survous where the what ever can get to them. Anyway i had moved into a house that had fleas and did not want to deal with the ex at the time. Got the Raid carpet fogger. It is not a whole room fogger but covers a pretty large area with each spray is supposed to be ok for pets but i did not have a pet. Usually you have to treat fleas at least twice to really get rid of them. Years ago in Florida i had to bug bomb a house twice to get rid of them. Now i am in Florida and have two cats but no carpet all slate tile good combination. Now while i am at it. For ants i use the combat ant disk i buy one quick kill and one long acting kill replace every three months and i never see an ant in my house. I am notorious for dating pest control men but never need them for getting rid of bugs. LOLHere in Uk we have a sticky thing you hang up that the flies stick to, also what about one of those zapper camping  blue lights. You coulkd burn garden candles that have the bug repellent in them. Good luckFirst... prevention.. cover/put away any food, dont let kitchen trash add up.. might even be worth it to go from a kitchen size can to a small can and empty the sealed bags a couple times a day.

Rinse soda cans/bottles and their caps.  Same with coffee cups. When you wash the kitchen counter  dry it off. they seem to love the water.  Dont over water your kitchen plants if you have any.

Move outside trash cans away from any doors or windows.  Animal feces, cat pans, MUST be cleaned up and removed and  sealed in plastic bags when it happens.. when your dog poops, grab it in a disposal bag  immediately. otherwise the flies go from the poop to your hamburger..

line large out door trash cans with a large trash bag after dropping in a  "no pest strip" then put your bagged kitchen trash inside the big trash liner. the no pest strip under the liner should prevent a lot of the maggots.  Wash your outdoor trash cans weekly, and let them dry in the sun . Wash your indoor trash can  at least weekly.

Removal. In the evening spray the kitchen well with Raid flying insect spray and shut the doors if possible.  By morning you should have far fewer. Go to a farm supply store and ask for the hanging fly strips. they have a little tack on the end and you hang them from the ceiling.. do it near a window, not over the counter..ick.. a good old swater and 15 minutes of fly patrol really does make a difference..
also keep a can of the cheap  stiff hairspray in the kitchen  just a single short shot on a fly will kill it right away.

We have terrible  flies here called cluster flies OMG  ick........

good luck.
