Q about bone strength and wieght training | Arthritis Information

I know that weight bearing exercise builds bone density.  My question is this, say you have bad elbows and so you have a lot of difficulty training your arms and shoulders.  Will your whole skeleton benefit from only exercising your legs??  Or do the exercises only benefit the bones attached to the muscle groups you're working out?

I could be way wrong, but I think that they are  really mostly worried about your hips and spine.. so  walking as much as you are able is a form of weight training.. You are supporting your full body weight..   maybe??I don't know if that's right or not kathy, but if it is, in that scenario your shoulders wouldn't be getting much weight resistance with walking, so would they benefit as far as building bone goes?

I'm wondering if weight training one muscle group is  good for all your bones, just like cardio is good for fat burning all over your body.
I think just lifting you arms as if you have weights would help alot . Starting out with just a lift at the elbows and then at the shoulders and as it gets to feel better use your own resistance . Making it feel like you have weights in your hands.
The more you can keep these areas moving the less chance you have of stiffening up.
I use stress balls in my hands to keep my fingers limber and twist my wrist around then move to the elbow then to the shoulders and back .
I also take my stress balls with when I am walking ( like little weights ) .
Hey Linky-Doodle!

Not sure of the answer to that question. I had a similar question last year about if you can't bend or straighten a certain body part, like your arm to build up your bicep & tricep mucscels, does doing trying to lift weights help build muscle even if the whole muscle is not fully functioning.

The above makes to sense, it is there to stay since I wasted brain power and typed it all out.

Anyways... just wanted to say my RD RXed me Actonel to help increase bone strength because of my pred usage. She did so because it looks like it will be a while before I will actually be able to come off the pred, RD's words not mine. And just to think I was going to ask to decrease me back down to 5mg.

Hope the treadmill is not kicking your A$$ as of lately
You have to be willing to start slow and easy but those upper body muscles will thank you for it.  Stronger muscles will improve the function and pain levels in bad joints.

Joonie-I've said it before...you need a physical therapy evaluation.  with your joint damage you have special needs.  You need to be taught how to rebuild those muscles safely and effectiviely

Hey Biscuit!!  yeah, I remember when you asked that question.  Do you remember what you found out about it?  Too bad about the pred, I know you don't like taking it.  but I guess it's better to have it than not.  A mixed blessing, ya know?

Miami~  Thanks, but I don't have trouble with my elbows.  I was just using that as an example.

Buckeye~  Thanks, that's what I wanted to know...if weight training helped all your bones or just the ones bearing the wieght.  I just make things too complicated. :)

Linky-Doodle - Nope do not remember what the answer to my question was, but I am guessing it was answered by Buckeye and probably about the same response that was given on this thread.

I know Buckeye. I am working on it. I have to figure a few things out and hope everything aligns up for me to go. Oh and need to make an appt with GP see if she will RX me Pain & Torture.
Joonie..good for you

Since I strted my workout program I've had both elbows and my wrist replaced..plus 2 other hand surgeries..My body was so crooked it didn't know what moving normal was  I literally started simply by moving my arms against gravity.  Even ifyou can't get a complete range of motion or stretch a muscle to its full extent ANY improvement in strngth is good.  You would be strengthening the muscles you can use.  Think about it... going from 1lb to 2 lbs in lifting ability is a 100% improvement.  And I did discover my range of motion did improve as the muscles strengthened
That is cool, Buckeye. Glad Pain & Torture worked so well for you.

I just hope... when I can go.... that I can stick to it.
I promise to yell at you every day to get you to go  Well... I guess if you feel like being tourette's you can yell random cuss words.

I have a random string of words I have been yelling this whole week. But it is bad. And mostly used when I got frustrated. And it is worse than donkey balls.

Well I don't want Tourette's.  So I guess I'll just quietly encourage you instead.

hahahaaa  well I felt like that when I had that fibro flare. I mean I was so freaking annoyed at not being able to get around the house and being all tense stiff and in pain. My mind wanted me to succeed in getting to where I wanted to go, but my body just would not cooperate. I was bursting into random cuss sessions on the way to the bathroom, to the kitchen just about anywhere. And then I would be laying in bed and cussing because I made something hurt worse or I could not roll over from my back to my right side. Or I could not get a swollen body part in a comfortable position to lay in bed comfortably.

Hubby is so use to me getting into the bursts of yelling he does not even come to see what it was about, he already knows.
