Arava & Alcohol | Arthritis Information

There is a lot of discussion about Methotrexate and alcohol.  I was wondering how many of you are taking Arava and if you have been told not to drink while on this drug.  From what I've read they are in the same family of drugs and both can affect the liver.  Actually, I think  most drugs can affect the liver to some degree.   Also which drug appears to make us more susceptible to hair loss?

I haven't been to RA doctor since starting  Methotrexate (have been on vacation).  He wanted me to have liver tests in  8 weeks.  When I told him we'd be out of town at time of requested blood check, he said just to come in when we came back which will be about a month late.   I know I'm going  to be stressed out about the liver check.  Have hardly had anything to drink on this trip.  But it's not much fun limiting our social drinking  with friiends.  They love to have a drink before dinner and wine with dinner.....especially these friends we are seeing this week.   It's really a drag!  Will definitely discuss with my doctor on my return visit.  However, I agree, the  most important thing is to feel BETTER.

These posts are so helpful as this is "real" life.  Thanks!           Sharon

I was on Arava in the past and it causes hair loss and is very hard on the liver.  I would make sure you get those blood tests completed every 8 to 10 weeks.  Arava caused my liver enzymes to elevate and eventually I came off of it.

I would be very cautious with the social drinking.  Especially being on Arava.  I know it is a drag!!!! But somehow we get used to it.

Hang in there.

This "real" life with RA stinks doesn't it? It's so hard to be around friends or hubby who has had a few. They definitely aren't "funny" anymore when you are stark sober.

I can't wear high heels anymore because my ankles kill.

My flexibility is out the window.

I don't like feeling this way- at first I was so thankful for just being able to take of my most basic needs since at onset I was helpless in pain and weakness. Now after a few months I feel so cheated.
I am on Arava and my doc said absolutely no drinking at all. Its not a big deal for me not to have a drink so it doesn't bother me.while I had an occassional drink when on MTX I won't risk it while on Arava.  Arava is harder on the liver
