Fabulous Book For The Newly Dxed | Arthritis Information

Hello all. Been meaning to post this for a while now.

There is a book written by the American Arthritis Foundation that I think is the best book I have come across for giving one a thorough overall education on RA.

It's called Good Living with Rheumatoid Arthritis
.

It lists all the drugs and tells you all about them. Why they are used, side effects, what they do etc. It gives an overview of all the possible tests we may have. Talks about alternative medicines, exercise, diet. Thoughout the book it has personal stories from RAers. There is a chapter on Pain management. One about the grief and depression that are part of this disease. It gives lots of resources to tap into. Things are put very clearly and for many things it has charts that are simply digested. I read it two years after dx but even then I got much out of it.

So especially the newbies here, hunt it down as it's definitely worth it.
I shall be posting some other books on RA very soon.

Sounds awesome!  Thanks Cordelia! My boyfriend went out and bought this book like three days after I was diagnosed.  What a sweetheart!  What a fabulous and caring boyfriend you have there! He is a sweetheart.

Now you just need to read the book too. That book has been my bible since dx in Aug 06.  HIGHLY recommend it! Is this the book Cordelia..

Yep, that's the one, Stephen.

You might be able to get it from your local library also, that's where I got my copy when I read it. A good friend of mine's mother works at our local library and she gave it to me. She is always looking out for resources that may be helpful with my RA.

It is good, isn't it, Joy. Glad it's been useful to you also.
I really liked that book too..........I found it to be very helpfulLynn492008-03-02 17:40:57Indeed, Cordelia, I never found another book that equaled it for completeness.  A friend of mine really liked a book written by an RAer about her first year after dx (can't recall the name), but I preferred this one.  She liked the personal perspective her book brought, whereas I like more fact-based books.  Good that there are a selection of books to meet our individual needs! Another good book.  This one was written by Carol Eustice the Guide over at the about.com arthritis site

Thanks, buckeye, looks very interesting.
Thank for sharing, Buckeye. I agree on the book choice - I've gone back many times and re-read sections.    Since RA is so changeable at times, I'm sure it will continue to be a great resource.
Im excited to get it..I just ordered it last night on Amazon! Erica, I hope it arrives soon for you. It will really help with the tons of questions in your head and it is so easy to take in.
Excellent book.  I bought it about a month ago.  And TheLa, the newly dxed is exactly who it is really, really useful for as you can look up stuff as it comes up initially.  ^ Thanks for the tip. I've also ordered  The First Year-Rheumatoid Arthritis: An Essential Guide for the Newly Diagnosed By M. E. a. McNeil (November 2005).  Written by another RAbie, for RAbies._popupControl(); Thanks, that one sounds interesting too.  how much difference between the 2nd and 3rd editions of the foundations book?Another great book is Rheumatoid Arthritis: Plan to Win  by Cheryl Koehn, Taysha Palmer, and John Esdaile, M.D. ( Oxford University Press, Inc.  2002, ISBN  0-19-513056-1

Thanks for sharing, Punkie.  Sunam, honestly I don't know. I have the second edition one. Someone else here might know.  I wouldn't think a lot. The basic information would stay the same, with updates of things that have changed since.  _popupControl();
how much difference between the 2nd and 3rd editions of the foundations book?
