Can you have a flare in your throat? | Arthritis Information

This seems to happen to me.  My throat will be very sore on one side, comes on fast and when it finally goes, it goes away fast too.  I first noticed it coming and going during my first ever flare, when my whole body was involved.  It was also before it was determined that I have RA. At the time I mentioned it to several different doctors and none seemed interested in my sore throat at all.  Anyway, does this happen to anybody else?  Is it maybe just a coincidence?

I do get sore throats a lot too. I don't know about you but I have terrible sinus problems, so most of the time I attribute it to my sinuses. My throat  feels like I have a big ball in it.

My throat is always affected when I flare. Its like a I have a cold coming on then it doesnt develop into anything more. My Doctor said its due to the inflamation.Yes I get this quite often and my doctor says there is a joint(s)? there that the RA can attack. My throat doesn't get sore, but it sometimes feels swollen and at those time I have some difficulty swallowing.  But I don't know for sure if it's associated with the disease or not.  I have herniated discs and other OA problems of the cervical spine so it may have something to do with that.  Jesse882008-03-03 09:24:15there is a joint in your laranyx.  cricoarytenoid arthritis is one of the rarer manisfestations of RA but it can occur.  In really bad cases you can get a cortisone injection (ouch ouch..sounds bad doesn't it?) into the area.

However before you decide its that you need to rule out possible thyroid issues (same area of the throat) as well as something as simple as sinus drainage.  Inflammatin in your jaw can cause weird sinus issues.

Their's a joint in your Larynx?  I didn't know that. I'm certain it isn't sinus drainage., I don't usually have a problem like that.  If I do, it's something I wake up in the morning with.  This can come on quickly at any time, and it feels different too.  My jaw isn't bothering me, but this pain does stretch to just under my jaw and back up behind my ear.I had a TERRIBLE sore throat (on one side) two days before my first flare last August.  It happened on a Saturday, and it was so bad that I went to my grocery-store pharmacist to describe the pain and ask if I should go to the ER.  I could barely speak, barely eat, worst sore throat EVER!!! He said I should try a throat-numbing spray first, and the next day the pain was gone as quickly and mysteriously as it began.  The day after that I had the WORST knee pain ever.  Went away in a day or two.  The next day it was the worst pain ever in my shoulder, and again, it went away quickly.  This pattern continued through several joints over a period of two weeks, and after seeing my primary doctor and an orthopedic surgeon,  finally diagnosed myself from the internet and went to an RD where blood tests confirmed RA.

So yes, I do believe that initial sore throat was somehow connected to my RA.
Nancy, I have slept with a bottle of throat numbing spray because the pain gets that bad.   Right now it hurts to swallow and it hurts if I look down toward the floor.  So, yay!  We aren't alone with our RA throats.Link, it may be a joint but remember this is an auto immune disease...there are tons of glands in your throat which can swell up because of that. I have had a very painful, barely able to swallow sore throat when flaring. It's not fun at all. Sorry you are having to deal with this.

My very first symptom was I knew that the glands behind ears and throat were swollen. I told doctors for years but they were always down again when I finally got there. I knew something was wrong though, they were way too swollen too much.
Oh and just WAIT until you get laryngitis. That's a thrill. Middle of the summer......no voice! I get that one a lot.

Sore throats yes, and for no reason - I get those too.

Cordy..........thats very interesting about the glands behind your ears.....I'm going to my PCP soon to talk about my STUPID left ear and my sinuses. They won't stop! Do you suppose it's related to my flares???
I had laryngitis once.  I thought it was kinda fun.  I have the throat thing a lot too. Comes on quick and goes pretty quick as well. Yes, Katiekins, I do think it is all related to your flares. Auto immune disease...glands go up to help fight all the inflammation.  OMG!  Last weekend I awoke in the middle of the night with the worst sore throat ever.  I attributed it to The MTX, as it was MTX night.  It hurt all Saturday, by Sunday-all gone.Yep, glands. I have had it so bad around when I was dxed that I could barely swallow my pills, especially larger round ones or eat. Not fun.  Cordy, thanks.  I hadn't considered glands and RA.  I know it can effect some organs, but I didn't know about glands.TheLa, I hope mine is gone tomorrow.  It's just getting worse and worse.  It hurts to even open my mouth.  I think I need a spitoon. Sure can effect glands, Link. When you have a large amount of inflammation in the body, the body naturally tries to fight it. Just like it tries to fight infection. Glands around the throat and behind the ears can swell badly. I also believe it can be connected with sinus but there is often a connection with RA and sinus too.  Cordy, was yours bad enough to want you to see an ENT? (ear nose throat doc?)

Mine's gotten to the point that I feel like we're all missing something big that's going on. It's relentless and I'm miserable. :( The skin on my neck feels like it's been stretched to the limit and about to pop. Eeewww
Linncn-Or a drool bucket! Ha

Feel better
TheLa...yes, that might work better, it hurts to spit.
