WAY OT - proposed teen camp | Arthritis Information

I thought hubby was making this up, or he heard a joke told as fact.  Guess not - here is a link to a news story about a proposed camp for gay, lesbian, and transgender teens.  Unreal.  Not the idea for a camp - the name they want!

I dunno...I don't see what the big deal is about the nameIt sounds like something they got off a t-shirt at Spring Break....I think this is a wonderful idea, and applaud the couragious couple that are creating this camp.  How sad that they have received threats!  I don't have a problem with the name either - the article explains why they chose it, and there certainly is a lot of prejudice out there to lick, isn't there?*I* personally don't have a problem with the name, however.........

When conducting business, and they are, maybe they should have thought a little harder. They knew they were going to offend lots of people with the camp itself anyway, so why would you bring on even more hate? It just seems like asking for extra trouble and heartache. But, I didn't start it, so oh well!

I agree, except I'm really not sure that in 2008 the camp itself would offend 'lots' of people.  But the name is definitely something that gets (negative) attention, so what were they thinking?

As a parent, if you had a choice between Camp (insert name of location here) or the name they chose, what would you choose?  Can you imagine sending them back to high school in a Camp Lickalotta t-shirt????
Suzanne2008-03-04 15:18:58Yeah it seems more appropriate for an 18 and up camp.

I wonder how people would feel about sending heterosexual high school students to a camp called "Camp Bangalotta" or something. Ya know?

Exactly!!!!  "Oh, it doesn't mean anything....it's a camp for drum majors....."

That's definately not a name they should have chosen.

For the camp, how can they do it correctly?  If you put kids in the same bunks together, that's like sticking teen boys and girls in the same camp at night.  I hope they have adults in the rooms during the camp.
It is an adult camp, according to the camp's own website.  Suzanne, did you see something that indicated it was for teens?  It doesn't say that in the article you cited.InnerGlow2008-03-04 16:22:29Ooooohhhhhhh

Well then, as long as they're ready to take the heat for a name like that from the whakos out there, I say let 'em have fun!

Phew!!!  You are right!  I KNEW something was wrong with what hubby said.  I got the teen part from him, like it was regular camp (which would be a good idea, without such a name!!!!).

Makes sense now, they want the controversy, I guess.
I always find that hubbies are excellent sources for misinformation! [/QUOTE]

So true!  He travels so much, he always comes back with something outrageous he picked up, and usually I can shoot it down.  But when I saw there was an actual newspaper article with that camp name, I thought he was right for a change LOL.
