Does anyone have Anxiety attacks | Arthritis Information

I frequently have these attacks when I'm at a stop light or in the grocery store in a line.  or walking in the mall with to many people.  I know they have Meds for this problem, but I really would not like to take another pill on top of the ones I'm presently taking.  Has anyone else had this problem, if so what did you do and is working?  Sometimes I feel so stupid.

Diagn. 1996/ RA 12 years. Orencia, Mtx, Folic Acid, Fosamax.

I have them- not so frequently anymore since I have a prescrip for xannax and just knowing I have something if I need it made it better.

The important thing is to take deep breaths. Inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth. When you are panicing you are forgetting to breathe or doing shallow breathing. I like to go off by myself to do this and calm myself down.

If I feel one coming on I take just a 1/2 a xannax and it usually doesn't happen. if I'm really nervous I'll take the whole thing.

Don't suffer- it's not a lot of milligrams they give you.

Yep, i take 20mg paxil and finally feel normal.  I was told to take it regularly or it won't work right when i need it.

Sounds like you have what i do, social anxiety.  Without paxil, i can't shop during holiday seasons, i can't answer the phone if it isn't someone i know, i can't post half the stuff i want in forums due to the fear of being judged when just trying to help etc.

RA can cause panic attacks as a side effect.  That and my dairy allergy were putting me through the roof with it.

I would talk with a doctor about treatments.
I started having panic attacks for the first time of my life when I hit my late 40s.  I was about to make an appointment with a therapist when I started hormone replacement therapy for menopausal type problems.  For some reason, replacing the lost estrogen in my body not only stopped the menopause issues, it also stopped the anxiety attacks. I wasn't expecting that at all.   It never ceases to amaze me how lack of estrogen can screw up so many areas of our bodies, even our minds.  Since they say emotional problems are often a result of a chemical imbalance, I guess it's really not too odd that an estrogen imbalance could also cause it.  Since getting RA and onto the drugs, I'd say that I have these now and then.

A deep breath or two usually gets me over the line else I go into the naughty corner away from the hussle and bustle till I calm down.
I have them.

Way way way too often. WAY too often. Mine are related to death, which I don't understand. I've had them since I was 11. I probably should have done something about them a long time ago, but I only admitted to them when I was about 20.

I've been on Lexapro for it twice now, and while it worked I'm not happy with it. I'm on the lookout for a good Shrink at this point. LoL I've decided there's got to be a bigger reason I'm having thse attacks and I'm ready to try to figure it out.

I hope anyway...........hehe.......
arriscolwell2008-03-05 13:32:01Panic attacks are very common with RA and I believe they are part of it definitely...one of the symptoms and consequences.

I have them for many years prior to realising they were connected to my RA. Panic attacks mix in with brain fog also for an irresistible combination.

Medication can help but I also found meditation very useful in calming them down as is cognitive therapy. I used to wake every morning with a panic attack when my RA was incredibly crippling wondering if I could manage to get my daughter off to daycare. I used cognitive therapy to get through it. I would literally talk myself through the process...and do one thing after another to get through it.

I am only just awake this minute in AU but if I think of anything else useful later, I will post it.
I've been having a problem for a while, but I don't know if it's panic attacks.  I do get nervous when I'm around a lot of people, but I don't have difficulty breathing and increase heartbeat like a panic attack.  It's just a really nervous feeling.  I also have times when I get that sick feeling in your gut like something is seriously wrong, but there's nothing wrong and then I can't sleep because I feel like my mind is racing.

Anyone do that?  I'm nuts, right?
Nope. Sounds like the precursor to panic attacks!!

Get that in check NOW and avoid what the rest of us have to do. LoL

*hugs*
Thanks everyone for the good advice.  I will have to check into the meds and see if it is feasible for me to do.  Thanks again.  I'm glad I'm not alone this site is GRRRRRReat!!!!!yep, I have panic attacks, had a really bad one in January....the ER visit...a whopping 00.00.

I hyperbentalate with mine so I have to try and slow my breathing down........THis last one took me about a month to get over then ended up with my IBS flaringa dn my ulcers acting up so as far as I am concerned it is just the beginning of several health probs that follow.

jode
I don't get panic attacks but I get extremely nervous and can't stand large crowds. I also lie awake at night and my mind is racing 100mph and I can't sleep. I have always been a real hyper person and this ra has slowed me down big time and it's been hard for me to adjust. Dr prescribed xanax for me and I take them when I need them usually in the evening and I sleep like a baby.HI, yes I used to get them but am now on Paxil 40mg (20mg prior to RA).  I don't know how these studies say they don't work!  Without mine I would not leave the house, I could not drive on freeways, I hated crowds and became claustrophobic.  Definitely try an anti-anxiety pill.  My GP always said, if you had a bad back, you wouldn't hesitate to take something for it, and your mental health is even more important to keep healthy, don't delay as if you do have a panic attack, it can do a lot of damage psychologically and create even more fears.  Kind regards Janie.
