I am just so sad.  I have been working very part time - 5 hours a week but double that for prep.  I have only been working 2 months and I have missed 3 sessions.  I have really missed more sessions but the parents (I tutor for a company) of one student I have are more than willing to re-schedule.  The parents I have missed three sessions with will not re-schedule.  I only make an hour where the company makes .  Anyway, I went to the rd today at 2:30 with a tutoring appt. afterward at 4:30.  There were no clocks in the room and I quit wearing a watch as they give me rashes now.  Long story short - I had no idea I was there so long but when I walked out - it was 5:00.  When I called - Parents were furious - I don't blame them.  So there goes the most rewarding, healing thing that has happened to me since RA onset.  I am going to lose my job.  To me - this is the cruelest thing RA has done to me - well besides pretty much ruining my marriage and the rest of my life.  I love my students and I love tutoring and I am very very good at it.  The reading specialist that trained me says I am gifted.

While at the doctor's appt. I was told I MUST go on IV biologics.  This rd is very thorough.  Obvious by the time I was there.  I think I am going to really like him.  I have been dreading this.  Anyone have any advice on which IV bilogic is the best?  He wants me to start asap every 2 weeks.

Sorry this is so depressing - I am depressed.   I will deal with it.
roxy2008-03-06 20:32:09Maybe you won't get fired.  Have you talked to your boss yet?

I don't know which biologic is better, or even if one is better than the other.  I think it just depends on the person.

hi rOXY, hang in there, make sure you explain to your boss, your good points will definitely outweigh your bad.  Hugs Janie.  Also I am a great believer in everything happens for a reason. Bigger and better things await you..  Keep  It is difficult to have work and go to the doctor appiontments. I do not care for that part either. I prefer to get paid for my time as opposed to paying others. I hope whatever biologics you and your RD choose work well for you. I personally would rather see you jumping up and down on your recliner than wasting away in it. So what Stephan said. I ditto that. Good Luckroxy, could you not tutor privately?

how about tutoring college kids too.. or help with getting ready for SAT's or GED's?

Mark and I both tutor..  he gets about 30$ an hour.. I get 20 when I do it.. I tutor very seldom though..

Could you read college kids writing, and make corrections etc.. help them write better  term papers etc?
Roxy,
There are also virtual online schools.  connectionsacademy.com is one.  I think they have a program in Oregon.  Students submit their work by computer or mail.  They do live online lessons where the students can hear you teach.  You use a white board  and students communicate via  keyboard and phone.

Not sure if it's an option for you but thought  it worth the mention.

Those are some really good ideas.Yes Roxy you should think about private tutoring.  I know for example I have been looking high and low to try and find help for my son.  Don't know what kind of area you are in but I know where I live nothing around here.  I bet someone would do good if anyone was available.

Also, I have learned long ago try to plan nothing when I have a doc appt.  Heck I had to take my son his first visit to the specialist.  OMGosh we were there for three hours before being seen.  I never dreamed it would take so long or one doctor could make so many close appts.
Two words....Personal responsibility.well Roxy..if you can't regularly work your scheduled 5 hours a week maybe the best thing to do is to take those 5 hours and devote them to improving your health.  Go to physical and occupational therapy, go to a pool, go to a vocational rehab center.  Spend your time learning about your disease.  After all this time you should be aware of the postives and negatives and dosing schedules of the infusion meds.  You need to educate yourself and not from message boards.  Take control and stop blaming the diesase for everything that has gone wrong in your life.  Marraiges that fail supposedly because of illness of one of the partners are likely to fail because of any difficulties

Its not fair to yoru students or parents to constantly reschedule.   Its disrespectful of their time.  But if you do keep this job then you have to do a better job of managing your own time.  You can't always blame RA for things.  You failed to keep track of time and was late.  You planned other activities on work days depleting your energy causing you to cancel.  If this job is important to you treat it like it is important.  Stop looking for reasons why things can't work and find a way to make it work
I'm glad to hear you have a new RD and they are moving you on to infusions. I hope you'll be able to find the one that's right for you and it will make a huge difference.

Real sorry to hear about the job. I know you were happy with it. Maybe it's not as bad as you think. Don't jump the gun. Did they fire you already? Seems like last time they were pretty hard on you when you had to cancel. I think doing something simular on your own might be a better option anyway. Good Luck!
If it's every two weeks, it sounds like Humira. There really isn't one better than another. It is just how your system responds.Whoops...forgot to finish. There isn't an IV you get every two weeks. Remicade starts with the first, then two weeks later the second, then a month later the 3 one. I take Orencia which is monthly.Went back to doctor.  I misunderstood.  I guess the first two infusions are two weeks apart.  As far as the nasty feedback- always the same people.  There are so many good people on this board - it is so sad.  NP  I rarely come here and usually it is just a quick vent.  I used to love to just read this board but I still let the ugly people make me angry so just not worth it

Thank you for the great advice.  Kathy - I am doing just that.  Going in business as a reading tutor for myself.  Just need a couple clients.  I would also like to make myself available to local schools to teach some life science.  I have so many wonderful teaching tools still.  One day at a time.  My aide and husband are actually going to help me make flyers and post them.   I am also advertising.
roxy2008-03-25 17:13:20Here's a thought.....I know you are into nature/science.  We use quite a few programs in our county that we have to be trained in.  The trainers come, give us an inservice, and then we get the materials to use in our class.  Ex: Save Our Streams, Project Wet, Project Learning Tree.  I know there is some sort of training that you would have to do but as a former ranger, you probably already have.  These are great programs-I know there are more, just can't think of them.  That might be something that you could do.

I do know that the tutors our school uses tend to make pretty good money.  I teach some life science-here it is middle school level.  I know that alot of states group all three middle school sciences into one end of year test for the state.  They take it in 8th grade.  It tends to be general science/life science/and physical science.  Most state testing takes  place in May so this may be a good time for tutoring.

If you make your name know to your local schools,  I wouldn't be suprised if you got some calls.  Of course, for a classroom it would probably be as a volunteer.  My kids just planted a rain garden out by the building as their AP project.  I had a local forest ranger come in and work with them all last sememster.  He came in every other week for half the year.  Kids loved it since it was somebody other then me talking to them.  He enjoyed it plus it met his community service requirements.  I already have him signed up for next year.

I hate that you are stuck in this situation.  No matter how much my kids drive me crazy-their energy is what keeps me going throughout the school day.  I hope you can find something.

Ooohh..is there a science museum near you?  I have helped out at the one near me during the summer months.  Nothing like explaining the Chesapeake Bay Watershed day in and day out :)

OK...got a lovely Orencia infusion at 8am...rise and shine!!
roxy
I understand your frustration. It was horrible losing a part time job when I was on chemo. I missed the job and the income, but I learned much more since than that I would never have learned on the job.

God has something better for you.
Mike
Hi, Roxy! Just wanted to say that I hope the new med is your wonderdrug and wish you the best of luck with your business. Whenever one door closes, another opens. *hugs*
Hope you have a superfantastic and extra-comfortable evening! Keep that chin up! :)
Hi Roxy, I hope whatever med you end up with, works really well for you. It really does get depressing when you are unable to do even the limited things that make you happy.
Best of luck with tutoring on your own. I hope it brings much joy to your life.
Hugs, Nini
