Hi All,

I was recently diagnosed as seronegative RA.  It took about 1 year for the diagnosis to come because I was being followed closely by an oncologist due to symptoms that looked liked lymphoma.  I ended up with over 38 lymph nodes in my neck, chest and abdomen that were over 2.5 cms.  Had biopsied a 4cm node in my neck and it came back reactive.  I was on a watch and wait for 1 year and we re did all the scans, no change.  However, my oncologist was concerned about my inability to get out of bed.  It was taking me well over 1 hour just to get "limber" enough to get in the shower.  The pain was excrutiating.  They ended up putting me on fentanyl patches and I was feeling slightly better.  The oncologist set me up with an Rhuematologist who also ran a ton of bloodwork and my sed rates and crp's were elevated.  Long story short, she started me on plaquenil.  I cannot take anti-inflammatories nor can I take NSAIDS, due to a history of severe ulcer disease with many stomach surgeries.  I seem to tolerate the fentanyl really well.

Finally, to my question.  I have been on plaquinel for three weeks and last night my eye started to itch terribly.  I know that retinopathy and corneal problems are a side effect.  Has anyone had the itching or is it a coincidence and I'm just allergic or having a minor reaction to something else?

Sorry for the long post but thought some background info may help and give me the opportunity to introduce myself.  Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

I don't have any advice for you, as I just started Plaquenil myself, but I was told that if I developed ANY eye changes to report to my eye dr. I do know that my eyes started itching and feeling tired before I was even diagnosed, so I am not sure if that is from the disease or what. I would get it checked out to be on the safe side, frankly.Hi Schell,

Yeah, I agree.  Better safe than sorry.  I see an eye doctor for my diabetes (type1) aren't AI diseases fun?  It seems you start with 1 and end up with 3.  It stinks but what are you going to do?  Thanks for your help...Hiking_gal
Hi Gal and welcome!

Sorry I can't help with the plaq but I have questions.

Ulcer/stomach surgeries?  Did you have h.pylori?  Did they run tests?  Do you have your records and can look yourself?

Please run a search, here and on Google, for lymphoma and Minocycline.  I think you'll be happy about some of the options you find.

Hugs,

Pip
Hi Pip,

My stomach issues started before they began testing for h-pylori.  I had 4 major surgeries on my stomach with the last surgery removing 2/3 of my upper stomach and a portion of my esophagus.  That was in '04 with very good results.  I haven't had an ulcer since then, but of course, we are extremely careful with drugs that are hard on the stomach.  As for your question, yes; I have tested positive for h-pylori and was given the antibiotic treatment for it.

I will definately look into the link on lymphoma and mino.  Thanks, Hiking_gal

Who else here has a history of H. pylori?  I can't remember.  Look at this!

Ok, and I have to research this 'heat shock protein' but I'm betting these ninnies forgot to account for PROBIOTIC'S during treatment with antibiotics.

Edited to put the 'ninny' link in.

I've been on Plaquenil for four years now.  My Ophthamologist said that Plaquenil has a "cummulative" effect on the eyes and generally takes at least 5 years for problems to show up and that's why he let's me have yearly exams.  Next year, I have to have them every six months.  He never mentioned "itching" as a symptom to watch for.

To the top for the other new girl - country????arg!!! can't remember
