Do You Have RA in Your Knees? | Arthritis Information

I just read an article where it said that the knees are usually uneffected by RA.

But if you read anything about JRA, which is what I was DXed with, the key joints effected are the knees. Which of course my knees were the most effected by JRA.

So... how is it that RA & JRA are so different in what joints are effected the most?

My knees are my worse being effected now and always have been.

Oh and are your knees effected by RA?
Yes Joonie, both of mine are, I have had the left one cleaned out and a tear fixed up.  But they definitely swell and hurt.  Regards Janie. I say says that the knees are commonly affected in RA. My grandma's RA is only in her knees and hips, nowhere else. I have RA in 26 joints, mainly my hands and feet, elbows, shoulders, hips, knees, and neck. While my knees aren't as bad as my hands or feet, they are still sore and swollen.  _popupControl(); Well I have JRA/Stills so I don't know if this will help you but yes my knees are affected. My left knee was the original JRA joint on me but then it cleared up somehow. My right knee however has been affected for the past about 18 yrs though never really severely. My main joints severely affected were my hips, both now replaced.

JRA dx 6/87
   ^ Just found out: The Oxford textbook of Rheumatology says that  the knees are often not inflamed at RA onset, but 80% of RA patients go on to develop RA in their knees. I think that is what they meant by that, Joonie. _popupControl();

I guess that is what the article meant, paperdoll.

But it does just seem weird that most that get RA starts in their hands and feet, where as JRA it is the knees, ankles or hips.
~ Well i'm young at heart, lol, but started w/ my wrists and very shortly my knees..
and of course, the added weight from pred, didn't help much..

I moved from an upstairs to downstairs apt, I stay away from stairs, as much as possible!!

and definately use the wheelchairs at walmarts and grocerystores..

and yes, my knees swell like balloons, but thankfully the Rituxan, is doing some good..
but recently some kind of weird setback.. Ha, but isn't that the story w/ ra?..
boom!
Both my knees, one elbow, one wrist, one finger, one toe, both hips and one shoulder. bubbagump2008-03-10 10:42:45

A big fat yes to that Joonie.

I had JRA in rt knee... now.. the RA is in all .. hands/wrists, feet/ankles, knees, hips...  and my worst joint is the one where the JRA started 40 years ago!!!

I used to have RA in my knees before I cured it...both knees have been replaced

buckeye2008-03-10 04:51:13Good grief yes...

my knees are the worst joint. have had multitudinous shots in them, wear braces,  cant walk at all some days..

See...kitty says in the previous post about this article. I have NEVER had problems with my knees and then WAM-O. I struggle to get up my stairs some days. I think that is hogwash. Oh yes. My right knee was giving me terrible trouble for a while. It has been better lately. Not bugging me very much.

When I was little I could't sit on my knees. My range of motion was terrible. I went to PT and ever since I could sit flat on them. Seemed to be worse when i was younger.
No pain in my knees but always feel like they are full of gel.RA is both knees, but my left one bothered me the most. It was really hard walking through the theme parks last summer. Since then I've had 3 cortisone shots. The 3rd one's finally helped to bring down the swelling, but I still have a huge baker's cyst behind the knee. Definitely RA in both knees....extremely painful and they tend to either not work (won't bend or straighten) or will give out on me.  (have my forearm crutches for that now...between my knees and ankles, I can't rely on my legs keeping me up anymore)I have it in both my knees.  In fact, I am going in next week to have at least one and maybe both replaced.  Of course, I started with JRA around 8 years old.  In fact it started in my knees.  Until the last couple of years, my knees have been the worse.  Now it is in every joint. [QUOTE=janiefx] Yes Joonie, both of mine are, I have had the left one cleaned out and a tear fixed up.  But they definitely swell and hurt.  Regards Janie.

Janie, I need to know how it was to have your knee cleaned out. Did you notice any imporvement? how bad was the surgery (is it even considered surgery?). Were bed-ridden or on crutches for a long time? How is your knee doing now? Do you still have flare-ups, pain, need it drained? Once out had it cleaned out, do you have to have it cleaned annually, or is this a one time deal? And was it very expensive? Sorry to ask but my doc recently used this as a suggestion to my knee and the pain/swelling. Funny enough it is my left knee as well. Also, when my doc talked about cleaning it out he also said something about cutting off some tissue...did you have this done as well?I have RA in my knees. That is i have heat and swelling and pain in my knees. Currently they are not the same size as they normally are. They are even not the same size as each other and my knee caps feel as if they will fly across the room. Forgive me for not reading the whole thread, but wanted to add that I have osteo problems in my knees which I believe are now affected by RA, too.

That, and "16 percent of those surveyed said the RA affected them at the start, and 16 percent also said that it is currently affecting them".  It's so cool to have a few stats from the survey!  Unfortunately, it's not so cool that so many of us have knee problems...
hey milly! Maybe me & you can have a kneecap quickdraw Mine STARTED in my right knee.  12 months to the day later my left knee was involved.  2 1/2 years later I had my first knee replacement.  12 months after that my second knee replacement.  FIVE   THATS RIGHT   FIVE  years later I was diagnosed.  The surgeon that did my knees figured it out before anyone else.  Now it is in my wrists and feet.Hi Joonie,

My RA started in both knees at the same time.  The stiffness and pain were so bad that I couldn't bend my knees to go up or down stairs, get into my car, etc.  I had to do the goose-step on flat ground and go sideways up and down stairs, swinging my stiffened legs to make each step.  That lasted for about the first three months that I figured I had RA (or something very much like it) before I was actually diagnosed.  Today, almost a yr and a half later, I still have stiffness and aching in my knees and feet but my predominant areas of pain and stiffness are my wrists and fingers.

K.
My knees and feet and ankles laid me out.  Finally shuffled to the RD, had labs, RA titer was 972.  My knees have always been a problem area.  Then OA attacked them and it was exactly one year from date of OA diagnosis till I had my first knee replacement.  The other will be replaced sometime.  RA in synovial areas, OA in joint, and PA attacks the tendons and ligaments.  I have such lovely knees.  Lindy
