My mom has osteoarthritis and she likes:
elasticized laces... the kind you don't have to ever tie

long handled shoe horns

ice grippers that fit on her snow boots

her disabled parking card

her bed rail to assist her in getting up

tub rail that clamps on the edge of the tub

I have RA and I like:

Good Grips utensils. I love the salad spinner. No cranking... you pull on the handle

Silicone spatulas ... they're light and can stand high temperature

Silicone muffin cups... no greasing/spraying pans, or trying to separate paper liners.

Long handled shower/tub scrubbers... no more bending... great for the walls

An under the counter jar opener... will open up lids as small as the twist-on ones on salad dressing bottles.

Extendable magnet... looks like those extendable metal pointers business people used years ago before laser pointers were invented.  Great for picking up pins, nails, metal screws. Mine's got an rare earth magnet so it's strong enough to pick up cutlery, and chef knives!

My daughter gave me a neat tool that does 4 things -  it can open bottle caps, pop up the tab on pop and juice cans, peel back lids on those small tins of mandarin oranges, and unscrew tops on pop bottles. She bought it at one of those specialty kitchen shops. My sister said she found one for herself at Winners.

For cleaning toilets, I like the long handled wand that grips those little flushable cleaning pads... no more dripping brushes

Microfibre blankets... they're so cozy and light weight

My foam mattress that molds to the body via body heat

Flannel sheets for winter. There are micro fleece sheets, but your nightgowns and pj's will stick so it's hard to turn over in bed

Rice or flax neck bags that you can heat up in the microwave

Pill splitters for those half doses

Our remote car starter ... no more going out in freezing temps to start the car.

My Merrell runners.... great grip and cushioning

This is good stuff to know .
Thanks Punkie .
haha comfy shoes are the first thing i would recommend. I practically live in my moccasins that have sheep's lining (they are also a size to big so i can still where them when my feet swell up from a flare up!)Maimi, you're welcome!

Arthritis Artist, I love my slippers, but I'm back to wearing shoes in the house cause of plantar faschitis (sp?) & heel spurs. I'm hoping these babies will calm down so that I can wear sandals this summer.
Punkie2008-03-11 22:43:18I don't have a specific item in mind, but I tend to look for stuff that is low maintenance and protective. Gore-tex jackets, gloves and shoes. Even if I'm not heading into the great wilderness, I can't stand getting cold and wet. im not too bad anymore....but i had a severe problem when i just couldnt raise my hand to comb my hair....it would hurt to hold my hand up....anyone no another alternative..i surely cant think of any.
and does anyone knw what to do abt wrist and finger pain....ive had too any flares in thos regions lately!

One thing I will recomend to all, and that is to whatch what you eat, many foods give me a lot of pain the next day, like red meat, sandwhich meat, sugar, caffeine, bread, pizza, hot dogs, and I am trying to pay attention of what I eat and how I feel the next day. I don't know if RA affects different people differently but I have this thing about my arms from my elbows to my shoulders, and they feel very heavy and the muscles of my upper arms hurt real bad spacially when I sleep, I can not scratch myself if I have an itch, I have a hart time finding a good side to sleep, I can not even lift my arms to cover myself with my sheets, it is kind of weird because it is not the joints that hurt but the muscle., does any one feels the same thing? All those things sound great!  I am very grateful for my handicapped parking hanger.  I'm also fond of my folding stool/cane.  I am supposed to stand all day, but I am allowed to sit on my stool for 5min/hour (according to corporate).  I also use it to help push myself up when I have to pick something up off the ground at work.

I really like those air-heated wraps that you can stick you yourself or clothing and wear all day.

And in the evening, I'm very grateful for my therapeutic heater cat that adds vibrating heat to my aching joints.  Sometimes she gets a little carried away and tries to give me acupuncture, but I try to nip that in the bud...
