Highest MTX pill dosage | Arthritis Information

Hey All,

Okay, I'm a wus.  I admit it. I HATE taking my MTX injections.  I know, it's suppose to be easy as pie, and it really isn't difficult.  I just hate it.  I think about it days before and find reasons to put it off.

So ... I was wondering what the highest dose folks have been on MTX pills at.  I'm on 20 mg injection now, and have been up to 25 mg.  When on pills I maxed out at 17 mg, after that he put me on injections.

I'm thinking of begging to go back on pills.  My only side effects have been hair loss.  I know that the efficiency of pills is reduced at higher dosages, but ...

Much thanks for the input.

- J.
I'm on 25mg and my doctor says I can't take any more than that.

I hate doing injections too. I always did my Humira ones on time because I hated to mix up my schedule; but I take b12 injections now and I always put them off. I just hate the shots! They don't really even hurt much....I just hate them.

I have heard of one person on these sites being on 30mg but my doctor won't go that high. He says we'll have to add something back to the MTX if 25 isn't cutting it anymore. Not sure why. Cancer patience take a lot more than that. I don't really understand it. He just says more won't help if 25 isn't doing it.
My doc maxes out at 25 mg too, but insists on injections over 17.5.

How are you tolerating the 25 mg?  Any side effects?
I do fine on it. Years ago it really wore me out....but I've slowly but steadily increased over many years. I've been at this high dose for a long time now though. I handle it better than most I think....and I'm thankful for that. It really makes a huge difference for me.

We've tried lowering it but symptoms quickly returned so we've keeping it where it is for now.
That's great info ... many thanks, Lovie! I had a hard time with my drugstore because I'm on 25, they said manufacture recommends no higher than 20, however, doctor called them and they're giving me 25mg....so, that's the highestHi Joy
My RD switched me to inject when the dosage went past 20mg  - that was her standard for inject vs oral.  I'm with you though - I hate injecting, so went back to oral after they reduced me back to 20 mg.  Now, having some increased issues, so not sure it was the best thing to do.   I think I'll be back to complaining about injecting soon.
I was on 20 mg. and was just recently put on 25 mg. injectible.  I've only done it once, but I felt sick four hours later and that wasn't a problem with the pills because I split up the dose.  Needless to say, I like the pills better.  I think my RD won't go higher than 25 either.  He also said the injection is 20-25% more effective than the pills.  I feel really good today but I'm not sure if it's the MTX or not.  Time will tell, but I can tell you now I won't like the injection any better than I do now.  The pills are so much easier.  If I don't see a noticable improvement, I'll ask to go back on the pills and see if he'll let me do it at 25 mg.  I was on 27.5 mg i nthe pill form at one time.  Thank you everyone.  You've given me the confidence to talk to my RD about returning to pills.  He's a young fella in a new practice, so his breadth of experience is probably limited.

I'm going to call for an appointment tomorrow.

Many thanks.
- Joy
