Okay, don't think I'm goofy but... | Arthritis Information

Does anyone know if you have to be extra careful to avoid food borne illnesses like salmonella?   All the literature warns of bacterial infections while on meds, even MTX, and I was wondering if eating something like a fried egg with a runny yolk might now be a bit risky.  I can't find anything on the internet.  Thanks. LaWell, I wouldn't eat raw eggs - but some folks swear by it.  I think we have to let 'common sense' be our guide.  We have somethings we take a risk on...and others are a 'pass'.

I had to log back on for this one - YES!  EVERYBODY is supposed to be careful about food borne illnesses.  You can't even sell an egg in restaurant here that isn't all the way solid - it is illegal!

On meds - you wouldn't want to get sick and have to stop them, right?  Fully cook everything, use precautions like a meat thermometer, etc.  Good practices for everyone.
Well, I still eat my fried eggs with runny yolks and have not had a problem....yeah- how about sushi or clams and oysters on the half shell? we're more prone to hepatitis too right?Me too, how on earth can you have an egg and bacon butty with a hard yolk. Half the fun of eating it is when the yolk and ketchup runs down your chinThe samonella or whatever is on the SHELL of the egg.Proper kitchen cleanliness should take care of that. Bleh....I'm not about to start eating hard cooked eggs or well done meat. I'll take may chances, thanks.

I've had food poisoning twice and both times it was from salads in restaurants. Salads: the number one poisoner. Mainly because the kitchen isn't being diligent enough and the raw vegetables touch where the raw meat has been.ookie blukks !

no offense, but my eggs have to be WELL cooked.....TIm always ate eggs runny, he and the dog loved 'em that way.

Runny egg yolk would be dangerous to eat I would think...dunno

I still eat sushi and haven't had any problems

Hmmm...I don't know if I feel better or worse.  I'm so craving a fried egg with a runny yolk, and if that's not bad enough, I now want sushi and oysters on the half shell! To each his own, but personally, I think life's too short to worry about that kind of stuff.  I like rare meat, runny eggs, sushi, raw oysters.  I've never had food poisoning, but if I end up sick for a couple of days it's worth it  to enjoy my life.Linncn- Do you think there is an increased risk because of the meds though?

Truthfully I'm set to have my runny egg and fried potatoes tomorrow, just my insatiable need to be informed on everything!

Snow~ they thought it was funny?  Must have been a bunch of guys!! ;)

There is an increased risk because of meds. Not so much increased risk of getting it as an increased risk of fighting it off. So yes they say it is better to not take chances with old eggs past experation date and under cooked foods. Does that make sence. You won't get sick easier but would get sicker from it.Milly-do you remember where you picked up that bit of info?  Very interesting.  I did read on some site recently that when taking biologics you have to be careful of semi-soft cheese and something else I can't remember, because they can carry lysteria sp.?RD told me that in Jan, but then did not put me on meds because i had been having so many infections.thanks for the info about foods and meds...  I had no idea.. Nothing was said to me when I was Rx'ed.
