ortho visit yesterday and other stuff | Arthritis Information

Here is the news from the ortho visit yesterday.  I am wiped out.  LOL.  Surgery is for sure the 20th.  The reason the surgery was not done when I was an inpatient by Dr. Pennington is because of the RA and how severe it is.  The surgeon in the practice that is doing my replacement does *only* replacements AND *specializes* in replacements in people with RA!!!  So, they actually turfed me off to the best doctor in the practice for my situation.  He has extended joint replacement education also.  He did a fellowship in joint replacement at Case Western in Cleveland, OH.  I was actually born in Cleveland!!! He has done replacements in patients as young as 16 years old due to RA (total hip). I will have of course general anesthesia and a femoral block (femoral nerve in the leg is anesthetized).  The femoral block serves for better anesthesia in combo with the general during surgery and can also be used post surgical for pain control.  My old hardware from my osteotomy has to come out since it will be in his way of replacing the joint.  We don't really care about the old hardware coming out since I will not need it after replacement.  The bad news is that I went thru that whole osteotomy for nothing.  The ortho in Tucson never should have done it at all.  In people with RA the osteotomy is *not* a knee saving surgery and really does *nothing* to help prolong the need of a replacement.  The replacement should have been done at the time of the osteotomy.  Sigh.  At least it is getting done *now*, eh.  I will have a Stryker Triathalon TKR hardware (total knee replacement) for *women*.  I get a chick knee like I wanted.  I will most likely be in the hospital a total of 4 days including day of surgery.  There are rehab *milestones* I have to pass before being discharged.  Depending on how the surgery goes and the work involved is when I start rehabbing.  It could be same day or it could be next day.  I will rehab in the hospital several small sessions per day.  Then about 3 weeks out patient.  YAY!!  Soooo darn excited.  That is about all the news I have for now.  I am totally wiped out right now due to some things we had to do after the ortho appt.  This no RA meds thing is really getting to me.  The only thing I am on and can take up until the day of surgery is the pred and I will just keep on taking that in order to have some slight control over the swelling and pain.  The swelling is very bad and quite frankly very very ugly.  I am also very tired all the time from the RA.  I have been resting a lot and my family and friends have been on me to rest and I have been pretty good about that.   When I get my surgery time I will post that.  I am just waiting on the hospital to call me next week with that.

I am still very tired and not posting all that much except for updates here and there.  Today we either buy a cheepie refurbished laptop and wireless router, or we go rent one for a month.  We don’t know which one yet until we get out to the computer store out by the zoo.  They *say* they have what I am looking for (just something to surf the web, be on the boards, and be on AIM) from 9 and up.  It is 0 to rent everything for a month.  Danny doesn’t seem to see the need for a 2nd computer for the family but the rest of us sure do.  With 2 people in the house with RA and 4 people wanting to use 1 computer at the same time sometimes it can be a bear around here.  Danni has her laptop from school until June I will throw on the network too.  Hopefully setting up the network will be easier than getting this darned wireless laser mouse to work that we bought yesterday.  Danny really needed wireless for the game he plays.  I do have XP and it is *supposed* to be just plug and play lol.  More like plug and pull out hair lol.  Just because Bill Gates says that doing a network is easier than ever on XP, doesn’t mean that it is true.

*******I have changed my AIM user name!******  I will update my profile with it too.  I was very tired of my old name and being linked to oh yeah…that is so and so’s mom, gramma, wife, etc.  So, I wanted something for *ME* and only *ME*.  Ya ready?   Here it is….TattodCheesehead!!!!  LOL.  Oh it is so me.  I am such a cheesehead and I have plenty of tattoos.  LOL.  So, update your buddy lists!!  My email remains the same.

*If* everything works out according to Plan A and/or Plan B, I will have a laptop today on a wireless network!!  YAY!!  We thought about maybe renting one for a month and the cost isn’t too bad.  Only 0 for the month.  We have also thought of getting a cheepie refurbished laptop that just needs to surf the web, handle the boards, email, and of course my AIM lol.  I have found a place with those for 9 and up.  So, either way, I will have something today where I can lie in bed and be online like I so desperately need to be.  The reason for the indecision (I would just rather buy and be done with the whole shebang) is that Danny still does not see the need for 2 computers in the house when the rest of us do lol.  I don’t know *how* he can not see this need with 2 people in the house with RA, 4 people that usually want 1 computer at the same time, and the *fighting* between the girls on whose turn it is online.  Right now, the girls get 30 minutes at a time then have to give up their spot lol.  Danni has her laptop from school until June and I will throw that on the network too.  So, until June rolls around, we would have 3 computers.  3 girls + 3 computers=a happy daddy that doesn’t have to hear a bunch of fighting and whining over the computer.

Today is Danni’s choir competition over at the high school.  I will *not* be going since these competitions are not very RA or pain friendly.  There are no comfy places to sit at all.  The competition is not held in the auditorium (this is a regional competition) where the comfy seating is because there will be so many schools from the area there.  The kids do their singing in classrooms etc.   It is hard enuf to sit in those chairs if you *do not* have RA.  Danny will take plenty of pics and videos for me.  I am just glad it is finally here and the crazy rehearsal schedule is over with.   For now.  Until the next activity she gets involved in lol.

That is about all from here.  Hopefully I will be online later this evening from the comfort of my bed!!!!

I hope everyone and their families are well.  I think of all of you everyday hoping that ole Arthur is not stalking you.  I miss everyone and the love, caring, and unconditional support you all show to me.  Don’t forget to do that little something for yourself every single day!!!!

Liz, great to hear from you and glad you are hanging in there.  Nothing but pred?  You're an amazing woman!

Glad to hear things went well with the orthopedist and they will be doing things *right* this time.  I will be thinking of you, especially on the 20th, and sending out good healing energy to you.

I don't know how you've gotten by with only one 'puter at your house.  Hubby and I alone can't seem to get alone with the one we have.  But it sounds like things will be easier once you get the technology you need.

And TattodCheesehead...I love it!
Hugs and prayer and congrats and ???

Hugs,

Hi Liz, am very happy to see you posting.  I know that we've talked about TKR often but you'll do great.   The most painful part of the surgery, wasn't surgery, but the RA flare.  You'll be pretty much mobilized due to the passive motion device.  My back, shoulder, and arm really hurt.  Hell, I took all the pain meds because of the flare,, not the knee.  Don't get me wrong, there's knee pain but for me the RA pain was worse.  Please drink plenty of liquieds.  My doc had me on Demerol pump and it so blasted me off into neverland that I forgot to drink and my potassium crashed and I ended up getting IV potass.  It just plain old hurts.  So between the knee, ra flare, and IV potass. I wasn't a happy  patient.  Drink, drink, drink.  Take care.  Lindy
