Getting to know you for the newbie... | Arthritis Information

Ok, since I am new I was hoping that everyone would introduce themselves.  Tell a bit about yourself.  Age, married, kids, etc.

I am 34 and married.  We have 9 kids.  We live in Utah.  We had high risk pregnancies with a couple of preemies so we adopted half of ours.  Our oldest will be 16 on April 1st (he was one of our preemies, yup the april fools joke was on us) and our youngest is 4.  We have a couple with special needs.  Our 8 year old is severally learning disabled and our 4 year old is autistic.  We enjoy going camping as a family, four wheeling, fishing, playing racket ball, soccer, et.  I personally enjoy reading, swimming and walking.

How about all of you.
I am 21 and newly married (1.5 years), I have a BA in elementary Education and teach at a private school. I plan to go back and get a MA in psychology and work with kids who have autism, they are the koolest kids in the world! I am the oldest of six children and my youngest brother will be 2 in June. So whenever I get that baby ache I go and babysit and can you imagine, I"M CURED!!!!!!! lol, I am classically trained vocally and sing constantly, unless I am in pain. I read a lot. I tend to be very hyper and happy most of the time. I try not to worry about many things. I am also a Jewish Christian. I go to Calvary Chapel (its a nondenomenational church). I would like to have kids, but I will have to adopt, too many meds and other conditions would make it next to impossible to have a baby. I have already had a couple miscarriages and that about killed me. So wont even try. I have a wonderful husband!!!!!! Whom I am madly in love with. And he has been taking care of me so well. I was diagnosed at 11 but have had symptoms since I was 7ish. So long battle! but most of us have had that. I'm 46 and married.  I live in Ontario, Canada.  I have two children.  A son who is 26 and is married with one child (4 month old Bailey).  My daughter is 24 and lives with her boyfriend...I  think they're getting engaged this year..at least that's what I'm assuming since they've been talking about getting married next year.

I'm married (it will be 3 yrs on April 1) to a wonderful man that is sooo understanding with what I'm going through, and I have 2 boys from a previous marriage (even the boys help me out). I'm 36. I'm a hairdresser, and co-own my salon.

I'm still undiagnosed but I'm hoping to have some kind of answer to my mystery on Wed when I meet my new RD. I know it takes a while for a DX but I've been down this road before and I'm hoping she has some clues for me.
hm....I hope you get dx soon, thats not a comfortable place to be. Hi

I'm 47, married 25 years with 3 kids- daughter 23 (graduates with masters in Education this May), son 19 first year college ( just got a letter he is failing 2 courses), son 16 starting to drive.
I work as a Sales/Service Manager by day and I keep my husband's business books and do his clerical work by night.
Was diagnosed this past November and this RA has really thrown a wrench in the works of my life.
However- right now I am at a point where I am able to do everything I need to do and I am very thankful for that.
I am 40 years old, happily married for 15 years and 4 children.  One son-8 and 3 daughters-4, 10, and 13.  We are currently waiting for an appt. for my 10 yr old daughter to a ped. rheumy.  She is having joint pain in every joint for the last 2 months  at least.  I am a stay at home mom and love every minute of it!

I like camping and hanging out our at our pool during the summer.  I can hardly wait for it to get here!!!  I also love scrapbooking, sewing and reading.  I hibernate in the winter!
I'm Lindy, 63 years old and married to an absolutely wonderful man for 14 years.  I have a 42 year old son, a great daughter in law, and two gifted grandchildren.

Stan and I are retired.  He retired after 30 years in the Coast Guard and I'm a retired surgical nurse.  We've been retired for 3 years and have a pretty adventurous life.  Also had my own business for years (certified aromatherapist) and worked as an advocate for senior citizens.

We now travel fulltime, live in La Penita, Mexico (35 miles north of Puerta Vallerta) for 6-10 months of the year and travel the U.S. the other times.  I've had RA for about 10 years and have reached clinical remission for the first time in 10 years.  I also have psoriatic arthritis which isn't in remission and have some severe pain and swelling in my tendons.  Hopefully, PA will also go into remission soon.  Traveling sometimes presents problems because of having RA/PA/OA and complications but it's the one thing that has kept me excited about life and kept me moving.  I'll continue traveling as long as I can.  Lindy

I am 28 and a Stay-at-home-mom for 9 years. I am married - 9 years. Have 2 kids, my daughter is 9 & my son is 3. I am in Alabama.

I was DXed with JRA when I was 18 months old, and have had some remissions. It got worse after having my son. I also have Fibro, newly DXed.
I'm 47, married to the love of my life, and have two grown children.  My 24 year old daughter is engaged, so I am actively in the throes of planning (and paying for) a wedding.  My son is 19, and has recently enlisted in the US Navy.  I have devoted my life the last 24 years to parenting, and can't believe in a few short weeks we will be empty-nesters!  While I'm sad to see this part of my life over, I am excited about the freedom we'll have to pursue new interests together.

I was diagnosed with RA in 1997.  I've been on a multitude of medications in an attempt to find the right one(s) for me (which I'm sure everyone here is very familiar with), and two years ago, that problem was solved for me with Enbrel.  It's all I take now...once a week, and while I still am cautious with my joints, I am virtually pain free, and can do most everything that I want to do, without restriction.

A side note:  I am not a newbie here, but I 'd not logged in for some time.  When I did, I discovered some changes had been made to the forum, and was required to re-log in.  I had my preferences set to always be logged on, so I have long since forgotten my password and login ID...so, I started over. I am a 31 year old single mom of a 4 year old little boy. He is a great kid-just a TON of energy. I teach middle school science and I am the chair of the dept.   I love crazy "in-between" years of middle school. Kids always keep you on your toes-and the make me laugh daily.

I grew up right outside Washington DC in Arlington. I could see the Washingtion Monument out my back window. Needless to say, moving to SW VA was a shock but I love it now. I have always been a die-hard Hokie and now I am able to attend games. I do miss my Washington Capitals. Not much hockey down here.

Before RA I was extremely athletic. I also rode horses--have my whole life. That has been my biggest change. I am not able to ride any longer but I have a close friend who shows regularly and can live through her. My ex-husband has recently made a reappearance and this has been helpful with my son.   I just hope he sticks around this time(very long long long story). I do have other family that have relocated to this area as well and they provide a needed break.

Oh...I was diagnosed in high school but had "inflammatory arthritis" through middle school. I have done the rounds with biologics and I am currently on Orencia. So far so good :)

I'm 48, married, and never had any children.  Guess it just wasn't in the cards.  I just can't imagine running after 9 kids.  That would just wear me out!

I was born and raised near Bloomington, Indiana and have worked as a programmer at Indiana University for 27 years.  I've never traveled much.  I visited Toronto once (loved it a lot!) and Florida.  I would love to go out west some time.

I'm a Christian and was saved December 31, 2001 at Cornerstone Pentecostal Church.  I don't have a lot of hobbies.  I love to crochet, but can't always do it when my hands are hurting.

I just recently added Enbrel to my cocktail of Plaquenil, Relafen, and MTX.  I'm hoping it works well enough that I can drop the MTX as I hate how it makes me feel.

Hi, I'm Suzanne, I'm 37 and I live in NJ.  I've been married for almost two years to my second husband.  In the process, I gained two stepchildren--a 15 year old stepson (suffering from a different AI disease) who lives with his mother about an hr north and a 26 year old stepdaughter who has an apartment about 2 hrs south.  My parents live only a few minutes away, but my younger sister moved last year to Ohio with her new hubby.

I was struggling with fibromyalgia and degenerative disc disease when the RA hit me 2 years ago, just after my appendix burst.  My latest treatment was Imuran with Rituxan infusions in November, but we are considering Orencia for next month.  Unfortunately my symptoms still aren't under control and I had to leave my administrative job at the end of November.  While I'm still on temporary disability, I'm not sure I'm going to make it back to work that quickly.
Hi,

I'm a newbie, 47 year old with seronegative RA.  I have a Masters degree in Public Administration and am a Township Manager overseeing the administartive offices, public works, police, fire and rescue and the sewer authority.  My employees are the best and they have always been there to help out when I am not well.  I am married for the second time for two years to the man of my dreams.  We have no children but we do have two schnauzers, two horses and 4 parrots.  Our own little zoo.  My hobbies are horseback riding, hiking and writing.

This is a great post.

Hi Everyone -  This thread is a great idea!!  I am 56 years old and was diagnosed w/JRA at age 5.  I have since had 3 total hip replacements and 1 total shoulder replacement.  My husband and I have been married for almost 34 years, and have lived in NJ all our lives.  We have 2 grown daughters, and have recently been blessed with out first grandchild!!  I taught music in public and private schools for 20+ years, but had to retire about 5 years ago, due to health issues.  (I still teach piano to a few students privately, and play for weddings, parties and church services when I'm up to it.....)  I enjoy most crafts, but currently I'm into scrapbooking and knitting and crocheting.  We share our home with 2 little 10 pound dogs - hence my screenname!!  Looking forward to reading more of your responses...........

Howdy.  Another Canadian Ontarian here (Ottawa, Ontario, that is).  I'm 39 and married to a fine man 10 years older than me.  We've been married for 10 great years.  Tried for kids, but didn't work for us.  That's okay, we've got a great relationship and have lots of laughs together.

I'm a federal public servant and my career is a moving target ... I'm switching from online advertising to more website project management next month -- very excited about the new challenges!

Love all things outdoors, and surprisingly, spend much of our outdoor time south of the border in hot, sunny upstate New York. :)  Or sometimes Vermont or New Hampshire.  All great places with friendly folk and amazing outdoor locales to play.  (Love Adirondack Mountains so much we're building a shack-in-the-woods near Lake Placid!)

My MTX has been good to me and I can do all the things I love to do again.  Maybe not every day, but most.

Thanks for the thread ... so interesting to read about the diversity of folks on this site and get to know each other better.  Amazing how diverse we are, yet bonded by RA.

- Joy
P.S.  I'm exhausted just thinking about 9 kids!  But what a big, warm heart their Mom has. :)
mmm ok I am 55 years old and married.  actually this is the 2nd time I married him. We married the first time  in 1975, divorced in 2002, and remarried in 2003.. 3 weeks after we remarried we ended up with custody of our baby granddaughter.. its been 4 years now and  we also have her baby brother.

We had 3 kids,  Elisabeth,  born in 78,  Rebecca, born in 81, and James, born in 83...Liz died Dec 23 1999. James is the father of the 2 little ones.

I was officially dx about 10 years ago,  but didnt start getting treatment til it  started getting bad about 4 years ago.  I am on SSDI  due to severe cardiomyopathy/congestive heart failure.. I was a teacher,  certified in elementary. and special ed, AND  reading specialist..  at the time I got  the heart issues I was a long term sub in an intermediate level special ed class. Sadly I never had the joy to have my own class, but I really did enjoy subbing, which I did for several years.

I love to scrapbook, read, watch movies,  go antiquing.. I'm  a very positive person with a truly warped sense of humor.. Ya gotta be ..right?

This is a great thread although I don't post much due to being so sick.

Take care.
"I'm  a very positive person with a truly warped sense of humor.. Ya gotta be ..right?" - kathy_in_wlsv

Yes, you do!  In fact, maybe both "positive person" and "truly warped" need to be part of the diagnostic criteria for RA!! : )

I'm 55, DX TBA hopefully Thursday. Native of NJ till I finished college Art major specialized in Photography. Moved to NYC for 14 years, writer, photographer, editor, public relations, advertising, picture editor, freelancer, married, divorced, relocated to IL as part of editing job, laid off, learned to program computers in one company, made it to their IT department. Hired as a computer consultant for awhile, temped, got hired at a company where I spent 7.5 years in four positions. Job ended last April. May I was diagnosed with lymphoma Stage IIIB. My fun part time job ended in August. Chemo patients need not apply. I finished chemo in November and my oncologist said I was good to go in January. Then I got these fun symptoms. Life is interesting.
Hello! Nice to meet you - sorry it's here.

I'm 63 and been happily married most of the time for 44-years to the man of my dreams.
We have three grown children, two daughters and one son; seven grandchildren, five grandsons and two granddaughters; and two dogs - a 17-year old black half lab and half chow and a 3-year old caramel colored shiz-zu with a black muzzle.

Have always lived life as each day is a gift and thus every minute of every day must have something going on. That was until RA took over my life.  AP has given me my life back!!

Since I have lotza catchin' up to do on this board I'll close for now.  "Gentle Hugs"

I'm 48, married for 28 years (in August) - where did that time go?  We have two boys - the oldest is age 23 and married for a year now and the youngest is age 18 and will graduate this year and then head off to college.   College is very close, so not quite empty-nesters.  I work fulltime as a Benefits Analyst for a telecommunications company and enjoy the work and people (most of the time)     Keep busy with church activities, friends, books and naps.   We bought a cabin a few years ago, so looking forward to warmer weather and heading to the lake soon.    Just a little over a year since diagnosis so still learning to accept and prioritize - it's a tough transition, but I'm hoping it gets better. Nice to get to know everyone.

Cathy
39 years old, married, 2 kids (7 and 8), 2 cats, pain-in-the-posterior extended family. 36 years old, married, 3 kids (14, 8, 6) 1 little chihuahua, and 3 cats, living in Washington.  I was dx'd with RA in Jan 2007, and it is far from being under control.  I also have Raynaud's, and some sort of heart issues that they are still trying to figure out. Also have degenerative disc disease and had back surgery this past summer.

Pre-RA and back issues, I was a medical tech.  I stopped doing that in 2006 and began testing software from home.  Now, with the RA, I have not really been able to work because of the inability to stay focused and sitting in a position for more then 15-20 minutes.  So, I have applied for SSDI and am waiting.  When I was first dx'd, I had a lot of trouble dealing with and accepting the dx, but was lucky in the last 6 months to meet some wonderful people that also suffer with this disease, and now spend most of my time trying to help others deal with dx, research the disease and try to educate others.  But, I too am still learning to accept everything and prioritize, as I still try and do too much...paying for it later.  However, having RA has taught me to value everyday as a gift, and I spend a lot more time treasuring what is really important.

This was a great idea for a post....great to meet you all.

I'm 44 and my husband and I have been married for 25 years.  We have three children, our sons are grown and on their own (both in the Marine Corps) and one has a wife of his own and a baby on the way (yay!!!).  Our daughter is just shy of 16 and in her short life has managed to aquire all knowledge about all things, making her dad and me mostly just a couple of pests. But we are pests with $ and car keys so we have been able to hold onto our posistion within the household.  For now......:)  Really she is a joy and a blessing and she is the kind of person I would want for a friend if I were her peer instead of her mom.

We have two loveable dogs, a Golden Retreiver and a Basset Hound.  Oh yeah, and I work with exotic animals. It isn't exactly rocket science but I do enjoy it and I couldn't ask for a better schedule.  I'm home when my daughter leaves for school and when she gets home.  I like that.
[QUOTE=Linncn] I'm 52 and married 25 yrs, 3 stepchildren all in their 30's 3 grandkids 6,7,8 yrs old. I work in retail. was Dx last year, but have had symtoms for 3yrs. mostly affects hands, wrists, feet. really has been nice finding this board and "meeting so many with the same issues."Hi, I've just turned 26 and I've just been diagnosed with RA after it has taken about 18 months to develop. I have a BA in English Lit and for the last 18 months I have been desperately trying to finish my honours degree, but the fatigue, pain and flares have made studying a long, drawn out and difficult process. I hope to finish in the next 6 weeks, just in the last few days plaquenil has finally given me some relief from fatigue (but nothing else!). I look forward to being able to finish and find myself work. I enjoy travelling, and was planning to teach English in Japan later this year, but I think it is best if I get my RA into a manageable state before I go. I also tend to see my RA as a gift because it forces me to focus on what is most important.  _popupControl(); Oh no, I forgot my furkids, two cats named Hobo and Loki.  Hobo's a Norweigen Forest Cat and Loki is a tuxedo.  Lindy LinB2008-03-17 22:17:53_popupControl();^ Lindy! I have a dog named Loki! He is a golden cocker spaniel and lives up to his name as a little god of mischief! LOL!

OMG I love this thread!! We havent done one like this in a long time!!

Ok well Im Shannon and I'm 25 and I have had RA since I was 20, 6 months after I had my daughter Kelsay.  I have been married for 6 years this comming Saturday actually, to someone that has really been wonderful over the years.  I was dxd with degenerative disc disease in 2000 after my hs graduation but now looking  back I'm wondering if it didnt have something to do with the RA that I would later be diagnosed with.  I am a SAHM and have been for 2 years now and I wouldnt work outside of the house no matter how much you paied me.  I love being able to be home with Kelsay before school and be home for her when she gets home from school. Her and I are like 2 peas in a pod and are EXACTLY allike (my poor hubby LOL).  She has decided already that she is going to be a Dr like my RD so that she can "make mommy  feel better".  She is my little angel.  I am taking classes online for medical transcription and I will be able to work ouf of the house.  On top of that I make beaded jewelery that I am trying to start up.  I would love to have more kids tho Im not sure if that will be in my cards right now...I was dxd last spring with POCS and have a few cysts that *could* potentially hinder our abilities to get pregnant again.  I also was dxd with fibro in Dec of 2006.
*edited to add*
Right now we have 2 dogs in the house too!  We have my daughters dog Finley who is a 12 week old Black Lab....He is definitly becoming a mommas boy tho, Cool thread.

I have 4 cats.  Beebe is going to be 16 and Prince (better known as Poo) is 10 then Angel is about 2 and Spitfire (no I had nothing to do with that name my 6yr old named her) is about 2.5 months old and full of it.  Then I have a dog who isn't quite a year old.  Sparty.  I would love to get them all in a pic together but for some reason they do not want to pose for me.

So what caused the cardiomyopathy, that can be a taxing illness all on its own without RA.  My dad's cardiomyopathy was caused by rhuematic fever as a child.

My father in law always says, quick ask a teenager while they still know it all.
LOL!  Now I understand your screen name!   Bless your heart.

OK, 55 years old, married thirty-five years to a great guy.  One daughter, 26, and one son, 30, and two grandchildren, ages 2 1/2 and 6 months, both girls.  I just LOVE being a grandmom.

I've had a couple of different careers.  During my younger and thinner days, I worked in New York City as a runway and print model for several years.  When I had my first child I stopped commuting and just did some local shows, then taught modeling, then stopped completely and focused on work that would allow me to be home when the kids were.  I took some legal administrative courses and started working part time and later, full time, as a legal assistant.  I was very happy to retire, along with my husband, a few years ago.  After living all our lives in NJ, we moved three years ago to the NC mountains, which we just love.

Oops, forgot the medical part.  DX'd with undifferentiated connective tissue disease in May '07 and take the meds listed below.  I'm doing pretty well overall, except that my right ear is being threatened by autoimmune inner ear disease.  The left one is already deaf, so the RD is trying to keep the disease under control, as well as left-sided neuropathy.  I'm just keeping my fingers crossed these days.
Jesse882008-03-18 09:13:45Well since we're talking pets too, I've got four cats. So I do herd cats.   I am 41 and been married to a wonderful man for 21 years. We have a 20 year old daughter and just turned 15 year old son. We have a black/tan chihuahua, 3 fish, one bunnie and 7 outside cats. We live in the middle of corn/bean fields in central IL.  I am 1 of 5 girls and my family is all over U.S., Florida, Missouri, and Mississippi. I have 12 nieces and nephews and our family get togethers are loud and rowdy!
I was dx at 39 right around my birthday. It's been a long road but I am finally starting to feel better taking enbrel after trying so many different drugs. I was ra positive my rf factor was 129. I was allergic to several meds they put me on. My ra started in feet and hands. I have some damge in left ankle what they call 'tarsal tunnel syndrome' and damage in right thumb and the finger next to it. I have bad days when the weather is humid or wet; be it snow, rain, or sleet.
Good to read about everyone, very interesting thread.
WTG!
I'm 24 not married no kids. I work full time at a mineral exploration company creating maps of uranium mins throughout the world. I've had Still's/JRA (it switches between the two) for 21 yrs, yup my arthritis is old enough to drink. No clue how I got it. Docs tell me I am one of the most difficult cases they've ever had. I've been on basically every medicine, had both hips resurfaced, and am now on Mtx, Plaq, Indocin, Kineret, Folic Acid, Iron, Vit C, and BCx2 due to the previous drugs listed. Current joints affected are....hips, rt knee, rt shoulder, rt ankle, rt big toe, rt hand fingers, neck. Anyone else see a pattern here? Elbows and wrists are good yay!!
