a question for the JRA'ers and the moms w/ JRA'ers | Arthritis Information

A friend of mine has a little girl who is about 2 months or so younger then Kelsay.  They were over Saturday night and her and I got to talking about the kids like we usually do and she said that her oldest has been having a lot of leg pain from about her knee down to before her ankle for about a year now.  When she needs to be on antibiotics for recurrent ear infections she said it seems to make it worse.  When she complains of the pain she said that IBU seemsto help and that she is always wanting mommy and daddy to rub her legs.   I had brought up that she NEEDS to go see another dr...for a second opinoin.  THe drs that she has seen are saying its growing pains and not to worry about it.  She said that it'll go for 6-8 months she'll have a growth spurt then it'll be more sparatic (sp?) but it'll still be there, then about a month or so later it'll go more frequent like before and last another 6-8 months then another growth spurt.  She is not able to take her to another dr because they are on public aid here in IL and they give you 1 dr and thats it.  But after hearing her tell me about it I got to thinking and am worried about her.  Im always worried about those kids tho...They are like my niece and nephew (they are 5.5, 3.5 and 2.5) and they probably see me and my husband more then their *real* aunt and uncle.  Katie, these are the kids I have told you stories about...
If you guys could give me some feed back on this Id greatly appreciate it.  I told her that I would ask some people on my RA boards that either have JRA or have kids w/ JRA.

Thanks in advance guys!

I think it does sound like something to get checked out, but if there is not swelling or stiffness, maybe JRA isn't what is going on.

Since you say she has to see the same doctor, I would suggest that she take really good notes of everything for the next visit.  Hopefully, the dr. won't blow it off as growing pains and be more thorough, if she has a lot of details and he can see it is something that is truly concerning her.  If she doesn't get a satisfactory explanation then, she should contact the agency who set her up with him, and request a change and give the reasons why.

The mom will have to be serious and devoted to finding out more; if she doesn't really care, nothing will change, in my opinion.  I hope everything turns out okay.
My JRA started out like that. I have other stuff. JRA usually has sores in the mouth, extreme fatigue, joint pain (dah! lol), ect. Its worth testing and a reg doc can test, mine did and when they saw the results that when I began going to a specialist. But a reg doc can do a lot! I was also very sick as a kid, still am. But the ear infections could be a part of this or she could be one of those kids who are predisposed to getting them, maybe mom should look up natural ways to help them, there are ways! Since you do have it in the family though I think it would be worth testing. But if she doesn't have it real bad a reg doc can monitor it for her and give her the baby stuff to help. Good luck! I thought mouth sores came from mtx?I've had recurring canker sores (mouth ulcers) since I was a child. I have been told they are related to issues with the body's immune system.

http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000998.htmMy understanding is those are viral?  Herpes, but not the yucky kind?  My mom and brother get them.I don't think so..

Systemic Conditions Associated with Canker Sores (Mouth Ulcers)
Although the vast majority of canker sore cases are associated with no underlying illness, in a small percentage of cases, canker sores are indicative of a bodily (systemic) disorder. People with Behcet's Disease, for instance, will often have canker sores (mouth ulcers) in addition to genital lesions, eye lesions, and general skin afflictions.

Many people with digestive conditions such as celiac disease, Crohn's Disease, Ulcerative Colitis, and gluten hypersensitivity will also display canker sores as a manifestation of their underlying disorder. HIV infected patients may also develop canker sore like ulcers.

In the small percentage of cases where an underlying condition may be suspected, a careful medical history and examination by a physician will be able to indicate whether canker sores in a particular patient are associated with an underlying disorder.

What Causes Canker Sores (Mouth Ulcers)?
Current theories on the causes of canker sores have focused on the immune system. This research suggests that canker sores may be caused by the body's own immune system attacking the cells lining the inside of the mouth.

Research is being conducted to determine what makes a person susceptible to canker sores in the first place as well as what actions and mechanisms trigger canker sore outbreaks. Among those things that may trigger an attack or make a person more susceptible are ingredients in toothpastes, certain allergies to food products and preservatives, trauma from overzealous brushing or lip biting, and stress.

I think this is what the viral kind are - the vast majority they sell OTC symptom relief stuff for.  If you start getting them other places, I'd be concerned, definitely!

The only time any doctor looked concernedly in my daughter's mouth, or asked if she complained, was when she was on mtx.  She never had a problem, though.
My RD believes that mine were caused by immune system issues. Funny thing is, they stopped when I started MTX.   My youngest has the same problem that I had and that leads me to believe that with her, as with me, they are immune system related. Lynn492008-03-24 07:50:27My son's rheumy checked him for mouth and nose sores prior to him ever being on MTX.  He never had them before MTX but I think they were concerned about the possibility of Lupus. Hm how do I say this without revealing too much?

Could be simply from the way she sits in her car. Hint? At all?? If you don't get it tell me and I'll just PM you. LOL

Everyone else, just ignore me. *sigh*
