yeast infection/methotrexate | Arthritis Information

My doctor is not in the office today.

Can you take your methotrexate if you have a yeast infection? I'm supposed to take it this morning.

Does anyone get these infections due to the MTX or being on prednisone? I have only had one once before years ago and when I went online I see hormonal changes (just got my period), being on immuniosuppressant drugs and prednisone can foster them.

I hope not- this itching was like torture. I bought a one night cream treatment yesterday- I hope it worked- they had 7 night treatments too....
I have no idea about the methotrexate, but I've had yeast infections and they suck. See if your doc can give you the pill, it's one pill you take and it is suppposed to get rid of it. Works like a charm for me. Everytime I have to take an antibiotic for an ear/sinus infection, my doc will give me that. The name of it escapes me at the moment. I hope it goes away soon for you.^ Diflucan One is a one pill thrush treatment. Is that the one you mean? It costs AU here.

I'm on Pred but eat so much organic yoghurt and drink tons of probiotics so I don't have to deal with thrush. Is yuckky.
_popupControl(); No- this was a vaginal cream treatment.

I don't know what to do about taking or not taking my MTX.

Darn doctor is closed for Easter Monday. I could call the pharmacist I guess but it's embarrassing.

I wouldn't be embarrased at all. Most of the time, the pharmacist knows more about that than the doctors. Call! You can take the mtx---I've done it a few times with a a yeast infection.

What I'd say isn't so great is the one day treatment with vaginal cream. It's really harsh and a lot of the time it doesn't work. The 7 day treatment is the best, and once in a pinch I used the 3 day treatment. It worked, but it still took 7 days to completely clear up.

The best thing to do is as soon as you feel a twinge of one to squirt some probiotic yoghurt "up ther" overnight and then seriously increase your oral probiotic intake. Also, STAY AWAY from sugar, alcohol, and possibly processed complex carbohydrates until the danger has passed.

My gynocologist says to put boric acid capsules up there as a preventative thing. I'm sure it's pretty effective and safe if he says so, but the idea of it weirds me out so I've never tried it. You have to ask the pharamacist to make the boric acid capsules for you.I just had a horrible case of thrush a couple of weeks ago.  I had forgotten to take my folic acid for like 4 days, unlike me, really, and had just switched to the injiectible mtx.  Doc said to increase the folic acid by 1 mg. daily, then gave me a rx for diflucan, fluconazole is the generic.  Was gone in a day.   How bad is it?  Don't stop the mtx.  You just need an antifungal rx. and an increase of folic acid.

Just an aside, if it is vaginal, the diflucan works there, too.  Immediately.

There for a while I was getting them all the time. Thankfully I've been ok lately. Their a real pain!

I always stayed on my MTX schedule. If you are worried; maybe give your pharamacist a call. Their always a great resource for me.
I have always had yeast infections. After a continual 3 yr  span of them they finally  was put me on the diflucan for a month. THat helped. As soon as I wen off of it....yeast was back.

I was told later...........those with RA have a tendency to have chronic yeast infections.

Oh joy.....mine even turned into a bacterial infection....more cream later it cleared.
Thanks for your replies!  It's so nice to be able to talk to people with experience.

Gimpy- I stood in the pharmacy pondering for a long time whether I should get the 7 day or the 1 day treatment.  I was leery about it working in just one day but not wanting to have to use one for 7 days...

So now I used the 1 day and I'm wondering...how do I know if it worked?
I've never used the one day treatment....but I would imagine you'll know if it's worked or not by the way you feel. If you feel better I'd day it's worked....if not; Well....you get the the point.

Hopefully it will work.
Lovie- well that TERRIBLE itch is gone so I'm assuming it worked!Do you take folic acid?I keep a supply of the cream on hand. I buy mine at the dollar store. Works just as good as the name brands.Wait for several days and see if it gets better. I have in the past gotten rid of them just doing a series of yoghurt douches, but it can take a long time unless you catch it at the first twinge. I crack open some probitoic capsules and mix it with the yoghurt to boost the content of probiotics.

People with chronic yeast infections should look at taking more probiotics daily, as well as taking anti-fungal supplements such as oil of oregano or grapefruit seed extract. Also, consider asking your doctor for a prescription for Nystatin, which is a relatively gentle anti-fungal drug. Hard core cases should follow an anti-candida diet for at least a year. Candida can get a foothold and develope into Candidiasis, which is a serious condition that can cause all sorts of health problems (many of which mimic RA!)

You are a smart one! Thanks! I am going to try that, I am on antibiotics all the time, good thing to know my poor hubby can't deal with any more of the yucky things! What probiotic is best for people like me? I don't know much about them, but I keep reading that they aren't safe for people to take if you have immune disorders, it says it can cause serious reactions. (I read this on medline and oy....what was it...it was another med site). I don't know. I am interested. Would they help Fibro? My JRA is very aggressive and needs other stuff...oy! but I don't know. I may be put on biologics soon, is it safe to take both?I do take Folic acid but only 1 MG a day.

These is the first yeast infection I have had in probably 25 years and hope there won't be more to follow!

Jode- LOL dollar store cream!  And I was worried because the brand I bought was "ON SALE for a limited time ONLY!" I was like- OK why? Is it expired? But of course I bought it to save a couple bucks- then worried twice as much not only about will 1 day treatment work but was it on sale because it was expired and won't work!
I've never heard of probiotics being bad for auto-immune disorders (or anything else). Probiotics are found naturally in your gut (you have to have probiotics in your system in order to digest food). When you get yeast infections or thrush, it's because the microbes of Candida albicans have overtaken or pushed out too many of the helpful probiotics, and at that point it is helpful to add more in.

There are many strains of probiotics so I just mix up different brands to get the broadest range of strains, but honestly, the most effective thing I do is have a kefir, youghurt, and berrie smoothie every day. I find probiotic foods to be actually better and with a higher concentration of probiotics than supplements.

Probiotic foods:
Organic plain yoghurt (ingredients should be milk and bacteria only---you can add jam or maple syrup or whatever before eating if you want to)
Organic Kefir
Unpasteurised sauerkraut (NOT the kind that comes in a can)
Unpasteurised brine pickles (have to make your own)
Kombucha
Unpasteurised, unboiled miso

Prebiotic foods (what probiotics like to eat---you will get more ooomph to your probiotics by eating this as well)
Berries
oatmeal and other whole grains
Jerusalem artichokes (also known as sunchokes)
most fruits and vegetables to a lesser extent

But most people just take supplements. Florastor is a good one if you're taking antibiotics. I look for enteric coated pills because your stomach acid will kill the loose probiotics so the enteric coating gives it a fighting chance to get to your gut.

Gimpy-a-gogo2008-03-24 14:24:31hi, I went to the swimming pool after I started taking methotrexate and my joint pains were gone. Already the next day I had yeast infection. For quick treatment some times the three day treatment will work a bit better than the one day treatment. I guess i could beleive Mtx can cause this. I know prednisone and antibiotics can. I honestly think the RA it's self makes it easier for us to get them.
