How do I ask for X-Rays? | Arthritis Information

Hi Everyone,

I had X-rays done on my hands and feet in July '07 when I had insurance by a previous Rheumatologist.  Only minimal, if any joint damage detected.

Fast forward to now, and despite adding MXT and enbrel, I still can't bend my fingers on my right hand, some of my knuckles have increased in size, etc.

I do not get along well with my current doctor, but I do not have the option to change.  I am part of a program for people on limited income.  I believe if she does any X-Rays, her office will absorb the cost.  I would like to see how my joints are doing, but I predict she will say no to any X-Rays.

Are there any valid reasons why I should have these done now?  Any reasons so that I can sound educated when I bring up the request?

Thank you,
Nori
Yes, they should be done every year or 2 years.  I was just given orders to update my x-rays that were done just about 2 years ago. I would say no one will do them until at least after July ---just too soon unless there is a valid reason--

X-rays are a carcigen (spell?)--so you don't want too many of them done.
Are you referring to cancer causing?  Thank you for your input.  I guess I was wanting X-rays, b/c so much has happened in the progression of RA since the first set.  But if it would be advisable to wait, I will  wait.

Thank you for your input!

Every year or two??  I try not to have many xrays.  Unless I have some specific problem going on.I think more important than xrays, I would just make it clear to your doctor that you don't feel your RA is under control.  Keep a journal of your pain and swelling, take pictures, etc. and then go in and explain your concern that your joint deterioration is progressing.  Your doctor needs feedback on how you are doing, and then can make informed adjustments and changes to your treatment. There's no real reason to have them done; especially before July 08. Even then it's unlikely your doctor will order them especially if they are likely to be eating the cost. Truth is; no matter what they see on the X-Rays your treatment is unlikely to change a lot.

I think Hill makes a lot of sense that if you feel your current treatment isn't working; I'd push that issue more than the x-rays.

Hope things get better for you soon.
Lovie2008-03-25 10:12:36Thank you all for your feedback.  It was frustrating to see joints get worse while on MXT and plaqueil, and the only response for 4 months was to increase MXT.  I begged to go on a biological, but it took a long time to convince the doctor.

At this point since we are 6 shots into the enbrel and it can take up to 3 months to kick in, I don't think they are willing to change anything.  I guess I should give it a try.  I was more concerned about not being aggressive enough prior to enbrel.  I just wish it would kick in!!!

Thank you, again.
Nori
