My hair loss is so much worse | Arthritis Information

Hi Everyone,

I am on MXT since Sept '07, plaquenil since Oct '06, and Enbrel for about 5 weeks.  In Jan my folic acid was increased from 1 mg/daily to 5 mg/daily per my concerns over hair loss that had already occured since starting MXT.

I thought it was slowing down.  I knew my hair was MUCH thinner, but I didn't realize until I caught a glimpse from a 3 way mirror that you can clearly see my scalp throughout the back of my head!  I am literally panicking now.

I see my doctor tomorrow.  Is there any prescription I can try in addition to the folic acid or in lieu of?  I recently started taking evening primrose capsules.

I don't think I can handle this hair loss on top of everything else.  This is too much for me.

I can't speak for hair loss on RA meds, but even the hair in my nose seemed to disappear when I was on chemo.  My RD switched me to leucovorin, which is a stronger form of folic acid.  I also started taking biotin supplements on the advice of someone here.  Some days I think my hair is thinner, some days not, but on those first days when it seemed thinner my panic was huge.  So I understand how you feel.  I believe some people take both leucovorin and folic acid.  Ask your doctor about that as well.  Good luck. Sadly I was told there isn't much you can do. The doc said it totally depends on how your body takes the meds. You may find it slows the longer you are on it. I talked to a hair specialist and I used special shampoos that made the hair not fall out as fast, and I rubbed my head to stimulate folics a lot. But I lost a lot of hair! As soon as it was out of my system (mtx) my hair started coming back..I took biotin too, nothing seemed to help, but I have aggressive JRA and the mtx made me feel really sick!Thank you for your advice.  I think one of my fears is that the hair loss is permanent.

Jesse88, how much folic acid were you on a day b4 you switched?

I swear by Biotin my hair was so thin last summer coming out in strands...It grew back after being on the Biotin. I think it was a saving grace!I'm having the hair loss from MTX too.  Just bought some biotin and I'm hopeful that will help.

Between puffy face from cortisone and weight gain from the inability to exercise (yet) and now hair loss.. my esteem is suffering
