Recurring sore throat | Arthritis Information

I have my third throat infection since November.  I take antibiotics, it clears up, about a month-and-a-half later, it's back.  This has only been happening since my diagnosis several months ago, which makes me think there must be a connection between sore throats and RA.

Has this happened to anyone else since being diagnosed?  I read somewhere that if you start having throat problems with RA, you should have a cardiac work-up.  Huh??  That sounds a little scary.

Thanks for any feedback,

Hey Ginger, I haven't had any sore throats, hope you find out what's happening. feel better.Hi Ginger
I have RA and don't get any sore throats either.
Hope they clear up very soon

Ginger R: I've heard that, too. Perhaps it's because if it would be strep throat there's a real danger of damage to the heart, if left untreated. Yeah what do you mean by a throat infection? Are you talking about strep? Sorry I just want to be sure.

Sorry you keep getting it. :( I used to get strep every year, at least once a year when I was little. Then I stopped getting it, and got bronchitis and pheumonia every year (more than once!) for a while. I'm not sure which was worse.

But now, I rarely get either. In fact, I can't remember the last time I had strep, or pneumonia (thought I caught the start of bronchitis a little while back, soon enough to never really notice it)

Maybe you'll build a tollerance to it and never get it again!!! We can hope, right? *hugs*
Ginger - have you been evaluated for GERD (acid reflux/heartburn/indigestion)?  It can manifest as a sore throat because the acid backs up and burns the throat.  You might not even notice any heartburn when this is happening.  Definitely talk to your doctor.

Also, you might want to get a throat culture done "between" sore throats, to see if you're harboring a subclinical infection.  You may need to be on stronger antibiotics, for a longer time.
Ginger, I get sore throats but they aren't infections.  Mine are the result of something that flares in my neck/throat.  They hurt like crazy, but are usually short lived.arriscolwell,

Sorry... that was a little unclear.  By throat infection, I meant that it only clears up with an antibiotic;  however, I'm negative for strep.  It 'looks' like strep, but it turns out not to be.

Admittedly, I am very run down right now with lots of "stressors" going on.  RA seems to be very intolerant of that, I've noticed.  :/
