OT - Allergy Meds & Questions | Arthritis Information

Blah! So I've been popping Benadryl which has been super. So many of my "weird" issues have gone away since I started taking allergy meds.

I've already tried Cingular(sp??) and Allegra, etc etc so I was toked when Zyrtec came OTC. Now wally world has an off brand that's the same thing, but cheaper. YAY!

Today was my first dose and I do feel *something* but it's nothing like the benadryl.

Does anyone know if I can take a benadryl before I go to bed, even though I took the Zyrtec? They're (Zyrtec) only 10mg pills, and I have no idea what the Benadryl is.

It just seems like maybe the Zyrtec is something I need to take for a few days before I notice a HUGE response? I have no idea. LoL

Help me out here!
Yep.  I do it all the time.  Benadryl is the gold standard for allergy relief.  Zyrtec works well, but it's no benadryl. I'm loving the Benadryl, but I just physically CAN'T take it every 4-6 hours. I'm either too busy at work/don't remember/etc etc etc. So having a pill-a-day kinda med really helps me out.

I knew you'd answer me. :) Thanks Kelly!
Benadryl used to have an extended-release version.  I haven't seen it for years.  Bummer! Benadryl is in most over the counter sleep aids as well, that are used when you have allergy meds.

I wouldn't mix other allergy meds though, they work differently and have more side effects.
Nope, I just want these two. Zyrtec to hopefully start taking up all the slack, and Benadryl as my "ermergency back up I just can't take it anymore" pill. LOLI take Tavist the straight allergy form without the decongestant. It is an every twelve hour pill. Zrtec was to much medicine for me. If you can take the Zrtec more power to you. Just saying if it is to much sometimes the older meds are fine also. There  is a large selection and like anything else it is trial and errror. So what works for me may not work for you and vise versa. If you are happy with your med selection then, HooRaah !!! Just run it all by your doctor. You do not want to take too much medicine that makes you tired all at the sametime. Like flexeril and benadrly and zrtec all at once would be potentially dangerous. I think I've taken *just* about every OTC allergy med there is, as well as the Clatarin when it was still RX, and Singular(THATS how you spell it!) and Allegra.

NONE of them worked. :(

So I'm hoping Zyrtec does the trick!
You can mix quite a few allergy meds. but it is best to check with the dr./pharmist.  I have horrible allergies.  I got allergy tested a few years ago and popped up with over 20 major ones.  Funny...I am allergic to paper.  Great for a teacher:)  Anyway, I get allergy shots once a week.  Med wise...I take singulair at night, allegra in the morning, and can take Claritin if I need extra help.  Basically, they all work on allergies differently so you are not doubling up on ingredients.

This combo has helped.  When I first started teaching at my school I was in hives and wheezing  the entire staff week.  My principal even came in and turned my desk upside down to see what it could be.

Now...zyrtex made me super sleepy.  It is funny how they all effect us differently.
So far, Zyrtec hasn't made me sleepy AT ALL. Which shocked me, cause *everything* makes me sleepy.

I might just be excited that I can breathe......LOL
I use Zrytec-D with good results but not right before I go to bed cause I can't get to sleep if I do.  I had a rx for this for several years.  Now it is over the counter but I still have about 60 pills from my rx to use up first.  I can't take Benadryl.  I would not mix them but sounds like some do with success.
