Off my meds | Arthritis Information

I made the decision a month ago to go off all meds except a daily dose of nadolol. I did not realize all the side effects I had from the plaq until I stopped taking it. I'm hoping not to ever need it again. I'm taking a multi vit, a vit D supplement, cod liver oil (Nordic naturals) and evening primrose. I don't feel any different except for no low grade headaches or low grade nausea or dizziness. I had those three side effects but did not realize I had them. I'm not saying that all people can go off their meds. But, three weeks into it, I feel better. I'm also not saying that I won't need something in the future, but for now, I'll stick to what I'm doing and see how things go. Good luck!I hope it works out for you.Lorster

Do you see a RD regularly? Have you been in a clinical remission before stopping the meds?
I'm not making a judgement I'm just wondering about whether or not I would consider the same.
I have been under the impression that once you have RA you have to take drugs the rest of your life to prevent erosion of your joints.

I am questioning whether I need to be on what I'm on. I presented as a "severe" case of RA. But 2 months into MTX and Prednisone I turned around so completely even my doctor is amazed. Of course I am still being tapered from the prednisone so who knows what I'll be like. I'm down to 12.5 MG per day.  However compared to what I read in these posts I am one lucky woman. I am in what my doctor calls a medicine induced remission. He still says he thinks I will need a biologic. I don't.
I just talked to my niece last night, asking what meds she was on when she was first DX'd with lupus, because she's been in remission for about 5 years.  She was on the usual...pred, Plaq., celebrex and sulfas.  When they tried to put her on MTX she bolted, stopped all meds and started drinking noni juice.  To this day she swears by it, but I'm skeptical.  Still, she's been totally off drugs for several years and has only occasional stiffness.  I'm thinking all those drugs she took early on knocked the lupus out of her system.  I'm a beliver that it can happen.  I also have a friend who was on high doses of MTX for breast cancer.  She also was DX'd with lupus at the time, but apparently the MTX knocked it out.  Many years later, she's still free of the lupus.  Lorster, I hope the same has happened for you and that you enjoy many, many years of remission.  Wantobe...I do not have a RD. He died a year ago at a very early age, very unexpected. There are 6 rheumys in my entire state and they absorbed his huge clientele so the wait time is several months right now. I will have to leave the state to see one. I have never had any erosion which leads me to believe through some research that I may have the palandromic (sp) variety. It hits me like a truck, is not bilateral and then goes away and leaves me alone. But I never know when these times are going to hit so it is hard to plan my life, lol....join the rest of you. I have noticed increased stiffness in the past week so who knows, I'll be back on the plaq soon. Jesse, I have heard of the noni juice. Does it taste good? I have seen it at the health food store and wondered what it is. Lori - I stopped the plaquenil too, and hadn't realized how sick it was making me until I got off it, but I also switched to antibiotic protocol.  I think the MTX/plaquenil kicked Arthur in the nuts, and the AP is working on finishing him off.  In my humble opinion, of course.  Don't dismiss medication altogether - my MTX/plaquenil regime didn't work for me and wasn't right as my diagnosis wasn't pinned down yet - it was the shotgun approach and it backfired.  Take care CathyI was not on plaquenil long, so I cannot tell you if it made me feel worse. I just know it did not help the 3 months I was on it.

Hope it all goes well for you, Lorster!
Lorster, I've never tried the noni juice.  I just think it's too expensive and not really all it's hyped up to be by the people who sell it.  My sister tried it for a while and said it tastes absolutely vile.  My niece buys the kind that has blueberry juice mixed in to make it more palatable.  But no noni for me.
