Cod Liver Oil Cure? | Arthritis Information

Have seen this week some news items about research on cod liver oil therapy for rheumatoid arthritis. I know there has been a big study in Wales, and the one I saw on TV was about an Australian study conducted by some rheumatologists. They have concluded that cod liver oil definitely helps RA, and some patients have been able to either stop their drug regimes or reduce them. You need to take 2 teaspoons of cod liver oil daily and you may have to do this for at least 4 months before you see any results. Obviously it won't help everyone, but these rheumys are excited about results so far. They did not go into great detail, but I think it is an anti-inflammatory effect, which makes me think maybe it could help PMR?? Naturally they didn't mention PMR, it being a kinda poor relation to the big RA, but hey, it's worth a try isn't? Who likes cod liver oil? (yeecchh). Still, it would give the old Vit D a good boost. And who knows, it might work for PMR. Hi Chico

I have been on a combination of borage (whatever that is) fish and flax seed oil capsules since about Nov. or Dec.  I did see quite a difference when I started taking it but now wonder if I am taking the correct dosage because directions are for up to 3 caps. per day.  Each capsule is 1200 mgs....400 mgs of each of the above.  It is called Vital-3 or Omega-3.  I would recomend it but do no know if it could replace nsaids or pred.  Anything is worth a try as long as it is not harmful.  Also some of the ladies on the RA forum suggest putting the capsules in the freezer because they say it stops the fish burps.  I have never had that problem so haven't tried it.

I have also been noticing that most of the studies about PMR are being done in the UK.  Nobody else seems to think we have a problem I guess.  I think it was Margaret who posted a link a while back about a study done in Scotland or Wales. I won't swear to that though as I still suffer from brain fog.

Good luck if you give the fish oil a try and let us know how you make out.
Hi Pat, I believe that this is specifically cod liver oil, not fish oil as such, ie the omega 3 fish oils that people take these days. I'm not sure what the omega 3 fish oils consist of exactly, in the way of body parts and species of fish, but this particular trial was on straight old-fashioned cod liver oil. I'm going to see if I can find a link to an article on it. Borage is a herb, a pretty soft & furry leaved bushy plant with nice little blue star-like flowers. Bees like it. It grows wild here and there in my yard. Maybe there is more PMR in Europe than in the US? try these

I think i had good luck with my high grade liquid fish oil. I took 8 g a day - got it from www.drsears.com - His specialty is inflammation - he was on the team that helped save the lone survivor of the Sago mine disaster. I am now taking 4 g a day. There is also good information on research and such on his site..

Thanks Smartie, I'll look at those. I think there is a connection with VitD as well, and of course cod liver oil is a traditionally used source of VitD. See this article it is interesting. Rheumatologists in New Zealand evaluated a group of people with a variety of rheumatic conditions, incl PMR, for VitD levels.
