Prednisone Question | Arthritis Information
How long does it take for Prednisone to kick in? I was just starting it today- the 4mg 6 day pack. I don't have a formal diagnosis of RA but while we're having fun (yeah riiiiight) figuring out what's happening they wanted me to start this ....I think it depends on the person and what dose they need and if the doctor guesses right.
I started on 10 mgs a day- supposed to see results in 2 days- nothing, increased to 20 mgs, nothing, increased to 30 mgs- better but not for 24 hrs. Increased to 40 mgs- relief. This was over a course of 2 months.
Now I'm being tapered- I'm down to 10 mgs and still doing pretty good.
I have been on prednisone for over 6 years. I am desperate to get off due to its' many side effects. I can deal with the pain and inflamtion, however, I also experience flu like symptoms and severe vertigo when I try to reduce by even one milligram. One doctor has suggested humera as a "safety net", but I am concerned as I also suffer from chronic sinusitis. I am also concerned about the other side effects as well. I tried remicade, but that almost killed me. An suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks. You are right wanttobeerafree. I have been on 40mg. a day for 2 years now and I to want off but as soon as I get lowered I go into such a flare. I will try again. I am on MTX 10mg. and on the 40mg. of predisone I am aslo on enbrel starting tommrow. I was on enbrel for 6 months and had infection after infection so we will see this time. I do not want to stay on the preisone it make me feel awful. Bless you all Joan
My first go round with preds for PMR was 20mg tapered down to 5mg over 6 months.
I noticed marked relief from my symptoms is only about 3 days.
As Jazzrat indicates, it really depends what you're taking Pred for. PMR responds VERY quickly - in my case in about 3 hours, not days. My mother had RA and her response was much less dramatic.
The side effects are horrible - I've put on lots of weight - but if that's the price we have to pay to stay relatively pain free (and in the case of GCA, to protect our eyesight), then so be it.
Reading this forum has helped me realise what symptoms are related to which drug and which disease, and this information is useful. I also hope I'll be one of those who'll lose weight after reducing pred (though that seems a while off yet).
