Hi my doc told me today that i dont have rhuematoid arthrits i have osteoarthritis and lumbago in my back caused by the oa ,could someone tell me more about oa thanks dianaHI Diana;

I have RA and last year after a MRI on my knee was also dx'ed with OA. It's hard for me to know which is which. Here's a link about OA to get you started. I'd say just google osteoarthritis and you'll get tons of links for you to research.

I'm going to google lumbago because I've never heard of that.

What sort of treatment has your doctor given you?
Lumbago is just a general term used for lower back pain. I've never heard that before. Thank goodness my doctors never used that to describe my back problems.

I have horrible back pain a lot of it coming from my lower back. I suffered for years before my RD finally sent me to an orthopedic spine specialist. I have numerous causes for my back pain none of which they can do a whole lot for beside more medications. It's always good to put a name on things though. Somehow it helps to at least know what's causing the pain. I'm not sure I'd be happy with "You have Lumbago".
Diana, I would strongly urge you to seek the opinion of another doctor.  The things you have told us your doctor has said sound like they are from the 1940's!  This is the doctor who diagnosed you with rheumatism in your muscles and ligaments, and arthritis in your joints.

I don't mean to be rude, but I don't get the feeling that this is a physician I would put my confidence in.  Educate yourself on these diseases through searches on the internet, be an informed patient taking charge of your own health, and please seek a new physician - from this century, LOL!

Boney
Hi i will see another gp i wasnt very happy with what he said to me today he got me so confused about my  condition  thanks hillhoney and boney and lovie i,m so glad i have got friends like you to talk to love u lots diana Actually, you might not be too far off. Do get another opinion. Lumbago is often used as a catchall for what is now called Fibromyalgia. Go to a rheumatologist.  I agree - see a rheumatologist.  There are necessary diagnostic tests to diagnose RA, OA, and fibromyalgia, and those are best done by a physician who is highly trained and knowledgeable about these diseases and their treatments.

Good luck Diana, and please keep up posted!
Hi hillhoney and mab52 i will seek another opinion i,m going back tommorow to see another doctor and i am going to ask to see a rheumatologist i will keep you posted love diana OA is caused by wear and tear on your joints. Basically, it wears out the lining in the joint overtime. RA is different as it's your system attacking the joints. You have recieved good advice. Seeing a new doc, having x-rays taken, and bloodwork done will give you and them the answers that you need. Hopefully, your case is mild and can be control easily.
