Extreme Pain back of legs | Arthritis Information

I have had RA and Oa for about 6 years.  I have had the pain in my legs for much longer.  At first they treated it as restless leg s.  But it is not that.  Now they say tendonus(misp).  I am not so sure.  The pain is so bad.  Last night I could not sleep because of the pain.  I took pain pills and klonpan, which did not help.  Went and stayed in the whirlpool for 30 minutes felt good for awhile.  But had to get back up.  Did some stretches and execrising. Hit them on the side of the couch.  Put a blood pressure machine on them.  Finally, just laid on the floor and fell asleep at some point.  Needless, to say, no work for me today.

Do any of you have anything like this?  If, you do have do you deal with it.

thanks,

Try some calcium with magnesium supplements.

Hi Nana......what do you mean that you hit them on the side of the couch?  Boy, I was upp all last night to with my shoulder, have a hard time sleeping when I have to keep myself upright :)   Too bad we didn't know, we could have kept each other company.  You know how misery loves that!

I'm so sorry you're in so much pain! I hope it gets better for you quickly. *hugs*When it gets that bad I take 10mg Flexeril and a Valium. Good night Irene !I am so sorry, Nanamom. What medication are you on for RA? Could it be a side effect of the drug? I know that Methotrexate has a side effect similar to the one you have described. I would call my physician and get their advice. I hope it goes away and that you start to feeling better!Hi Nanamom, I too get bad pain in my legs, especially round the back of my knees and calf area. Mine isnt restless legs either and I still get it despite taking supplements. I find elevating my legs helps a lot. Sorry you are in pain.Thank you for all responding to my post.  I take pain pills, mtx, klonapan and aleive.  When I mean I hit the couch, I hit my legs against the arms of the couch or another hard service.  The pain is bad but it feels better for awhile.  My husband use to kick my legs or put pressure on them with his feet, but he want do that anymore.   The doc's know about my legs hurting but they haven't given me anything that helps.  I have tried the same thing as you pin cushon but it didn't work.  I had the leg problem before I had RA and Oa. Which I have had RA/OA for 6 years the pain in the legs for 10 years.  When it is cold they are worst, rain, and if I am nervous they get bad.

Pin cushion has anyone told you what you have?
It sounds to me like a cramp in the calf muscle which I got heaps when I was pregnant. Pressure and hard massaging does seem to ease it . Have you had your kidneys checked as my son has kidney problems and he cannot keep salt in his body so he has to take salt tablets. when he doesnt take them he gets the cramps back.I do have kidney infections a lots.  I have always had kidney infections since I was a little girl.  I have blood in my urine.

I do have cramps also.  But this is not a muscle cramp.  This is a continuous pain.  The muscles are not in a strain.

Thanks for your reply.

Went to the doctor again about the extreme pain in my legs.  She gave me some medicine, said that maybe it is nerve pain.  I started taking it Wed, I am suppose to take every night.  It looked like it was going to work, but last night Saturday, I had a horrible night with the pain.  What do you all think?  Has the medicine just not had time to get in my system?

What medicine did he give you?
The doctor gave me Neurontin 300 mg.Give it a couple of days but if it is not better call the dr. again. The leg pain is keeping you from sleeping and the lack of sleep can cause a flare in the ra symptoms. Lose, lose situation.

I hope the med works for you-it sounds miserable.Have you had your back xrayed?  You may have a disc issue that pinches a nerve, and that cause pain that runs down your legs.  Just a thought.  I'm sorry you are having pain, I've been having a similar problems so I know how painful and exhausting it is. I hope you feel better soon.  I get sciatic nerve pain (from my behind all the way down my leg) from time to time, and the only thing that will get rid of the pain is a medrol dosepack (6 days of steroids, declining dosage).  Works like a charm.  NSAIDs, vicodin, flexeril all do absolutely nothing for the pain (except perhaps make me a bit drowsy so I can sleep). Have you tried compression stockings?  You can get them at your local pharmacy or medical supply store.  If its nerve pain, the neurotin should help but it can take some time.  I take lycria, which is similar. Have you tried massage therapy?  It helps with my circulation, reduces the swelling and helps with the rom in my muscles and joints.
Another thing that might help is capsaicin cream.  Just don't get any in your eyes or hoo-hoo.
