Mouth Sores--Treatment? | Arthritis Information
I have taken two weeks of 10 mg MTX (on Sunday nights). The first week, I felt hungover on Monday, but otherwise seemed fine. After second dose, I noticed three days later (Wedensday) that I have a mouth sore way back by my molars, sort of what I'd think a mouth sore would look like, maybe 1 cm in diameter, white in the center. Also my inner lower lip looks bumpy, and I have some things under my tongue, but they may be normal, because I don't look under there a lot!
Went for a blood draw today, mentioned the sores. Nurse checked with the doctor. She said to up my folic acid to 2 mg/day and rinse with peroxide once a day. But I heard otherwise in articles I've read online. I go back to the doctor in less than two weeks.
Any thoughts?
Thanks!
Edited to add: I have a very different sore on my lip, on the inside, that I just noticed tonight. It is a bright red spot, very symmetrical and more like a cherry angioma or something than a "sore."
I am just wondering if this is just going to get worse and worse, since I'm only on 10 mg now, and it's only been 2 weeks...
KatieG2008-04-11 18:30:30Try rinsing your mouth several times a day with warm salt water. That's what I keep reading. But my doctor said peroxide. Just one of those things that makes me somewhat nervous about seeing him. But he seems knowledgeable over all... Don't worry-I think I've heard of using perioxide too- but I'd be afraid I'd swallow it. Also I know the salt water method has always worked for me. I have always been prone to them.
Hi Katie, I find hot drinks hurt but they help too. The salt water is an old but good remedy. There is a special toothpaste too for people on our sort of meds, it is called BIOTENE. Give it a try and a mouthwash, strong one helps too. I get all these and my Dr keeps reverting to 10mg MTX as anymore and the side effects are too much. Best of luck, Janie. You could also ask your doctor to prescribe leucovorin. It's a stronger form of folic acid and if nothing else works, that might be a good option. Jesse882008-04-12 18:31:21
