I know I have seen posts about no alcohol when you are on MTX due to liver toxicity.  What about Plaquenil?  Also, does alcohol tend to make RA flare up?

Just curious because DH and I have wine every night and while I do really enjoy that ritual every evening, I don't want to be stupid and if its actually making it worse, then that would really be stupid!

We had a get together last night and I had 2-3 glasses of wine and also forgot to take my Plaquenil at dinner.  I think I ended up sleeping for 3 hours total last night because I was in so much pain.  Is there a correlation?
When I started taking plaquenil, I specifically asked about alcohol.  My rheumatologist told me that it would be no problem.

As for the one missed plaquenil dose and a night of pain... I do not think there is any connection.  Plaquenil is not a pain killer; it takes weeks or months to reach full effectiveness, and remains in the body for quite a while after you stop taking it.

One thing I have noticed is that my tolerance for alcohol is lower while taking plaquenil.  I used to be able to handle 2 beers in a night; now I can only handle 1 beer without getting an upset stomach.
Alcohol doesn't mix well with a lot of medicines--so minimizing your intake is not a bad idea in the long run. I don't know about yours--I never saw anything--check with your doc or pharmacist. Sunam,

My RD never told me to limit my alcohol intake on Plaquenil.  The drug also stays in your systm for a long time.  Therefore, I would suggest that wine *may* be a trigger for your RA.  Lots of people find certain foods will make them worse.  Maybe wine is one for you.  You might want to consider laying off the wine for a while, then add it back in again and see if you flare.
Another interesting thing I have noticed is that since I have been on Plaquenil, alcohol seems to hit me harder.  One glass of wine feels like 2.   I used to be able to drink a couple of glasses and enjoy the taste without worrying about feeling it.  Now, I feel it by one and 2 is too much.  I think I may try taking a break for a bit and just see what happens.  i never did much drinking before ra ..allways made me ill
when i got ra and started mtx i have never had a drink scince.
i drink alcohol free beers and wines..
Boney
Actually, I've heard that RA and alcohol don't mix...

but i'm not really much of a drinker... (i'm a lightweight and and an obnoxious drunk) LOL
so I don't drink..

but if you note the difference... you might want to change your habits..
personally I prefer valium..  to relax and for pain...lol Right before my flare in June, I had quite a whoop de doo party and imbibed more than I should've..

A week later... I was hardly able to walk.

Havent' touched it since... and didnt' start MTX til November.
Well guess what! I have been being so good about not drinking while being on this MTX and I feel like tying one on really bad. I've been in a pissy/down mood. Lots of things have been breaking down in the house causing whopper bills and I backed into my husband's buddy's truck and dented and scratched my bumper last week because brain fog made me forget it was there.

I'm having 2- yes I said 2 Martini's tonight and throwing my care to the wind! I've been drinking lots of water all day and I plan to drink a lot of water tomorrow.

Hope I'm not regretting this tomorrow when the guilt and possible headache from not being used to this anymore sets in.....

My understanding is that it's OK to have alcohol while on Plaquenil.  As for the pain and missed dose, I have found the same thing happens and the RD said that's because the Plaq. is just barely keeping things under control in my case.  Unfortunately, upping the doseage is not an option as I think I'm at the limit.  Are you on 200 mg. twice a day?  Ask your RD what he/she thinks about the quick response to a missed dose.  Maybe you're not getting complete control either.

As for the alcohol, I don't drink at all since going on MTX but I really don't miss it.  However, there's been so much publicity about a glass of wine being good for people in general, that I thought I might be missing that benefit.  Then I discovered grape juice will give me the same benefit.  But this is the kicker.  I just read today that even one glass of wine a day increases the odds of developing breast cancer by at least 10%.  That's not a huge number, but I figure, why up those odds at all if I don't have to?  And if a woman has breast cancer in her family or other risks, it might be good to cut back on alcohol anyway, especially if she's taking it mostly for the other benefits.

Other studies have shown health benefits with moderate consumption of alcohol, no matter the source.  The alcohol itself seems to alter blood lipids.

In my family, there is rampant heart disease but not a single case of breast or other female cancers.  I'm gonna keep drinking my beer - one six-pack a month! WanttobeRAfree...ooh 2 martinis...yum!  You might feel extra hung over tomorrow, I did  when I had one.  I say, relax and enjoy tonight.  Let me know how you feel tomorrow.I can't drink, either. I had a drink once and I couldn't get out of bed for four days! I seriously thought that my drink had been spiked! That was even before I was on meds! I would try experimenting with different wines, maybe you need to change. Some wines I am fine with (usually expensive, delicious reds, my favourites!), but some cause flares for me (like white wines and cheap, mixed reds).  _popupControl(); I started plaq at the beginning of last semester and hadn't been drinking for very long then, but I did find that my tolerance went down. My only reference point is the time we did shots at a friends house... I was at 6 (vodka) and fell asleep around 2am (normal sleepytime for me back home was 10). When I got to college I realized how much I hated cheap alcohol and stuck to hard stuff... I remember doing a shot one night and being woozy and crashing after a few hours.

I had one semester of "good" partying (read: bailey's and milk while watching family guy. total party animal!) and now with mtx, just the smell of alcohol makes me sick. Though I am kind of bummed about not being able to have a glass of wine on my 21st (next year!) if I'm still on mtx--but if I'm feeling better, TOTALLY worth it!

I also noticed that if I missed a dose of plaq I'd be terrible the next day, I didn't know that it meant that it was barely keeping things under control... but that totally makes sense. And makes me feel better about getting on plaq...
I should note that those six shots were done over the course of 5 hours, not all in a row... and was my first time really drinking. Barely had a headache the next day, though! Yes Little Gypsy be careful! My son is at the #1 Party School. I know that doesn't mean anything- kids drink at all the colleges...it's up to the individuals to be smart about it. At a few of our local colleges kids have drunk themselves to death. It's very scary for parents to think about.

Meanwhile I enjoyed my two martini night. It really felt good to let loose and giggle and I even smoked a cigar too. I felt like crap all day today. What a let down....

I am careful and make sure my few friends who do drink are careful :) I've heard plenty of don't-drink-and-drive or don't-drink-an-entire-bottle-of-anything stories from my parents and my friends parents...

Sorry your day was crappy =/ but tomorrow will be better! hopefully... or the next day or the next...

A little of topic - do cigars taste as good as they smell? I've never tried tobacco (and never want to really, lol)
Luckily for me, I was born with a really low tolerance for alcohol.  Back in college, if I had more than 2 drinks, I would be throwing up.  Kinda hard to drink yourself to death when you can't even hold enough beer to be legally drunk.

Jasmine Rain- when we were young and drinking- when you threw up you were done. You were embarrassed and sick and you curled up somewhere in the corner and slept it off. This is what I learned from my kids about how it is today. They call it PUKE and RALLY. After they throw up they continue to drink.  This is how so many of them are getting alcohol poisoning and drinking themselves to death. My son's roomate does this regularly. At 10 am he was puking at the tailgate party at the football game. At 10 PM my son called me and asked that I call his mother because they had not been together since dinner time but he had just got a call the police searched their room because he and whoever he was partying with got really loud and obnoxious and someone called the police. They left before the police got there and left all their bottles behind. He had called his room mate and he sounded in bad shape and he couldn't get a hold of his mother. (Not that she could do anything from out of state. We at least were able to find out he was not driving or with anyone that was driving.

TheLea- I was so disappointed I felt so crappy after enjoying myself so much the night before. I guess I'm done too....

I am on plaquenil (altho not at the moment since I'm prego), but I drank at the same time and didn't have any problems. You might want to check w/ your doc first tho to make sure they say it's ok.  Other factors might also play into your system, so just take it easy at first.

As for support for alcohol + RA, check out this article... Altho this study was done last summer, i found it interesting!
