What Anti-Inflammatory med are you on? | Arthritis Information

Share

Ok... last post before I go to sleep. Need to "write" this down, other wise I will sit up thinking about it in hopes to make me remember it when I wake up. Which is a big fat chance of me remembering stuff now.

RD talked about putting me on an anti-inflammatory med too. She said it looked like I needed one because of all the inflammation I still have. And since the pred is not cutting it for the inflammation. I guess she is going to put me on one after I taper the pred down pass 5mgs.

I just wanted to get an idea of what new anti-inflammatory meds are out there now.

So... what kind of anti-inflammatory are you on?
I take Relafen 1000mg 2x  daily.

Joonie, NSAIDs can be rough on the stomach. Please ask your RD about meds that will protect your stomach lining.
I'm not on anything right now but I have use naproxen and indocin. Neither worked.Punkie; What do you take to protect your stomach? My RD suggested a prescription NSAID this week too but I said no. I'll just take OTC IUB. I've gotten to where I take a lot of it though and maybe he's right. Maybe I do need to get one as well.

Do you HAVE to take it all the time? I've like taking the OTC stuff because I can just adjust it as needed. I can take up to four.....but don't always. Sometimes 2 helps....sometimes I can manage without.
I take DayPro.. once a day 1200 mg.  It seems to work well with every day dosing.  IF I miss a dose by an hour, I am feeling the pains.  So, same time, every day I take the DayPro.  I also take something to protect my stomach.  Over the counter, Prevacid.  The RD said that if I needed a script for something stronger he would RX one, but I am managing okay with the OTC med and my DayPro.

good luck to you!!  I hope you find something that brings relief.
I was taking Feldene aka Piroxicam, works great but I can't take any type now due to tummy probs.  Have tried everything, only takes one and I spend 3 hours in the toilet, breaking out in a sweat and terrible pain and usually diarrheoa, sorry if thats too much information, even happened after a suppository antiinflammatory, so Dr said no more!  Good luck Joonie, and well done for keeping on keepin on!!!!  Hugs Janie. When needed, my NSAID of choice is plain old naproxen, 1000mg/day.  If I have to take it for more than a  couple of weeks straight, I also take Prevacid 30mg/day.

I've tried many other NSAIDs, and naproxen works best for me,
I was on celebrex for years before I started having trouble with a bleeding bowel. So I stopped them straight away and havent had any anti-inflamatories since.I take Relafen 750mg 2x day.   Seems silly when you consider I'm on mtx and enbrel as well, bu it bothers me to take a high dose for a long period of time.  Just seems like it's going to mess up my stomach at some point. I'm on Relafen (Nabutome), 500 mg 2x day.  I also take Protonix for my GERD, but my doctor never said specifically that I should take something because of the NSAID's.  I've been on just about all the NSAID's, with the exception of Celebrex and Feldene.  I've been able to tolerate most (not Indocin) but some worked for me better than others.I take Relafen, 1000 mg 1xday, unless I'm having problems, then it's 1000 mg 2xday.

I also take Prevacid.
I take celebrex
im not on anything right now but ive taken, naproxen, indocin, relafen, tolmentin, celebrex, mobic, viox, im sure ive taken others but i cant remember right now. tolmentin worked for awhile and naproxen screwed up my stomach though so make sure you take prevacaid or somthing with itRelafen 1500mg daily. I've had decent results with ibuprofen and naproxen, and became yellow on celebrex--worked good otherwise.  Thanks for the replies everyone!

Seems that we might need, InnerGlow to make another survey, but about the meds we have all took.

It seems that Relafen is the one Drs are giving out more.

Well... thanks for the repiles and of course, I will take something to protect my stomach.
Joonie,
I may be way off base, but didn't you state in a previous post that your GP thought you had a stroke?
If so  you should be very careful with taking any anti-inflammatories they all have side effects of increased blood pressure and the FDA has issued a warning stating that they all increase the risk of heart attack and stroke.  Be sure to discuss this with your RD.

I am on 15 mg a day of Mobic (Meloxicam) and I take Aciphex to protect my stomach.  It is working great.  Without it I can't even write, it is night and day for me, so I don't get why everyone isn't on one.  But I guess pred can do the same thing.  Not sure which would be better for stroke risk.

I think everyone reacts differently to different ones, so you have to give them a chance (in terms of side effects).  Indocin/Indomethacin messed with my stomach so bad I was off it the 2nd day.  But I have taken Vioxx and Celebrex with no problem (several years ago) although eventually I had an ulcer (but I wasn't taking Aciphex or anything similar).

I am on Celebrex 200mg -- in fact, that is all I am on -- rd hasn't prescribed a DMARD yet.  I take it 1 - 2 x's a day;  plus Tylenol for backup, though I seldom take it.  Rd said it was OK to take Tylenol with the Celebrex, but never take any other NSAID along with the Celebrex.  The Celebrex doesn't work as quickly and it seems to have an accumlative effect too.  After about 2 days it seems to work pretty good when I take the 2 a day.  It's suppose to be easier on the digestive tract.

Forgot to mention-you made me remember in discussing the Celebrex (and this suprised me)--NSAIDs take up to 5 days to really kick in.

KatieG2008-04-19 17:08:24So far 10 grams a day of fish oil has worked for me, although it took about 3 months to kick in. Fish oil also thins the blood so it's great for those with high blood pressure problems.

The drawback is it's not a prescription med so my Fair Pharmacare and Extended Medical benefits don't subsidize it. The cost is all out-of-pocket.

The other drawback is that as I learn more about Vitamin D maybe taking large doses of a supplement that naturally contains a lot of vitamin D may be just adding fuel to the fire. I guess I really have to do more reading about this stuff.

It does work great on controlling inflammation, though.Because of side effects I don't take a NSAID and haven't for about 15 months.  I've been using Fish oil daily, Vitamin D, Magnesium, anti-inflammatory diet.  It's all worked for me so far.  LindyI don't take anything yet. I don't have good luck with anything otc either. If the Plaquinel doesn't kick in in a month or so, rd said she'd give me celebrex. We'll see...I'm hoping I don't need to go there.I take relafen 750mg 2x a day. I doesn't bother my stomach but I have noticed that I have some major farts for a couple of hours after. TMI LOL!
I always take it with food.

Thanks for the info, Lala. I will discuss it with my RD on May 5th.

Now for everyone else... thanks for the replies! Looks like Relafen & Celebrex are RXed quite a lot. I have been on Celebrex before but it made my right side hurt, plus I am "allergic" to Sulfa, which Celebrex has sulfa in it. No wonder my right side hurt LOL!

I took Naproxen for MANY years for my OA in my spine. My new RD did not want me to keep taking it because of stomach and liver damage it can cause. He just switched me to Piroxicam last month.
I think it's working ok now. He also added Plaquenil as well. I take Zantac, but originally for acid reflex.
_popupControl();RE: Stomach troubles... there is a special med that you can take which is a proton pump inhibitor which stops the part of your stomach which releases acid, so that the acid in your stomach caused by the NSAID doesn't eat away at your stomach. The one I was on was called Omeprazole.

Some people can't take NSAIDs, Katie G, they just don't work for them. I had success with NSAIDs early on, but now they do nothing for me, nothing for pain and nothing for inflammation, and they don't stop the disease, so there is kind of no point in taking them. It's great that they work so well for you - hopefully they will continue to work! My grandma has her RA managed by NSAIDs, and I'm quite jealous!

I've been on Prexige (COX-2 - withdrawn), Mobic, Naproxen, Voltaren, and now I'm sulfasalazine which is an anti inflammatory, dunno if it it NS>.

Hi Lovie
I'm taking 40mg Pantoloc daily. Three years ago I was on 70mg pred for a few months and I started having horrible GERD attacks. Pantoloc is a proton pump inhibitor and it does a good job controlling the stomach acid, but I do have to watch that I don't eat a lot of spicy or gassy foods.
Two years ago my RD prescribed Relafen but I was leery about taking the med after my porblems with prednisone so I'd take one tablet occaisionally if the pain was really bad. Stupid me... I didn't stop to think that the med takes awhile to build up in the body. THis time I'm taking it twice daily and it is making a difference... my thumbs feel better and so far I've had no stomach issues.

WHat OTC have you been taking for the inflammation. My Mother-in-law finds that Aleve helps her. I don't think we can get it in Canada. One of her bingo buddies used to go to the casinos across the border and bring the stuff back for her.
