OT update on the dairy 'thang' | Arthritis Information

My older (not JRA) daughter had her well visit yesterday, so we got to discuss her new dairy issues.

She was sitting on the exam table, leaning against the wall, and I was telling her ped the story.  The ped listened, smiled and climbed up on the table, too.  She sat beside my daughter, leaning against the wall, too, and said, "I feel your pain."

She developed a milk allergy when she was nursing her son!  She gets hives, so she said good for me for being able to figure it out.  She said they were hoping hers would go away when she stopped nursing, but it didn't.

They commiserated about pizza and nachos.

Since we tried a few lactose free things and they still bothered my daughter, she said it must be the protein, casein.

We already had a calcium handout she automatically gives out, that listed sources of calcium.  She said she takes a vitamin with it in it, too.  She didn't mention vit D, but I guess she knows my daughter gets enough sun by the tan lines LOL.
OMG OMG OMG!!!!

An unknown force sends me to the FDA site occasionally, and there is always, always a reason!  I bought chocolate Silk for my daughter when we were are the beach, and she drank some and said there was milk in it.  I said there wasn't, and she said there had to be, because of how she felt.  I still have it, because it made her feel so bad she never finished it!

I've been on the phone with a very nice rep, who took down all the info.  Interesting - they save a sample of a batch every fifteen minutes.  He used the code numbers to ID the batch, and they will check it.  If it doesn't have milk protein in it, they will investigate spoilage.  Let's see if they expand the recall to include full cartons, that's what we bought.
OMG!  I wonder what went wrong.  Are you reporting the larger container?  You need to so they investigate that too!

P.S.  That doc sounds caring.  Hugs!
Yes, we only had the larger container.  I'm telling you, I got a chill when I saw that recall for single serves.  I was like, 'damn, she was right....'

The guy was so nice and so thorough - what did she eat with it, etc.  Thanked me a thousand times for calling.  Said someone will definitely call me back within 24 hours.

The ped - we love her!  Each of my daughters has a ped they love the best, but also will tolerate one or the other in a pinch.  I will be so sad when my little one gets older and wants to see a female, her ped has been so great to her.  And I always tell people my older one wants to BE her ped, she admires her so much!  And now she has the same allergy LOL, so it must be true!
Many people who can't have dairy get the same reactions from soy too, it is possible the soy milk is just soy and she can't tolerate it.

I can't use it with my dairy allergy but i don't have a soy one.

I use rice milk.
She's been fine with chocolate soymilk.  It replaced her evening chocolate ice cream habit!  I was glad because it has calcium in it, and have been buying our store brand.

But it was a different store at the beach, and they only had Silk.  So I checked the label, and it said dairy-free.  But the minute she drank a bit, she said it had milk in it.

Since we've been home, she has finished up the store brand that was here, no problems.

Our Silk expiration date is 06/05/08.  I guess they are testing it right now, so we'll know by that date if they expand the recall.

When I picked her up from school, all she said was, "I told you."   I'm dying to know if she was right.....but I'm thinking she was.  They called me back.  They are so nice!  She said Quality Assurance was working on it, but she asked more questions.  She said four people have reported hives and trouble breathing from the single-serves.

She said what Bubbagump said, some people can't tolerate soy and get gastro effects from that.  I said I thought my daughter had had enough soymilk that it wasn't that.

She offered a refund, and I said a coupon was fine, the main reason I called was so no one got really sick if it was in the half gallon size.  She sending seven coupons - alright!!!!

And guess what?  They make a dairy free yogurt with live cultures!!!  That is the main reason I hadn't tried eliminating dairy for my younger one - she needs the probiotics!  The rep searched for retailers for me,  but they are way out in the burbs, so she gave me the bar codes to ask my local store to order it.  Woo-hoo!!!!

I am glad you are figuring this out for your child.

It gets so frustrating when doctors say "i don't know".  Growing up we learn that doctors are almost like human gods when it comes to fixing what is wrong, but when we grow up we learn that isn't even close to true.

But, if she likes rice milk, you can find it in fridge section or in specialty section no fridged in stores.  I prefer the rice milk taste over soy.
Chocolate almond milk is good. Mmmmmm.

Suzanne, you can make kefir with soy, rice, or coconut milk, or even water! The only thing is you still have to make a dairy batch about every fourth time because the grains live on dairy.
