Does anyone here take supplements for their RA? I am currently taking 1200 mg calcium supplements a day plus Glucosmine. I have also heard that fish oil was good for RA. Any more recommendations?
shelli go to arthritis.org and you can order a free supplement and vitamin guide. I take the following supplements and it seems to be working so far. Magnesium, fish oil, msm gluclosamine, vit C. The guide tells you about a bunch of supplements and vitamins what they do and the daily allowance.
I take Glucosamine and a Cod Liver Oil tablet every day. I'm pain-free but put this down mainly to the MTX. It's worth taking a few supplements anyways seen as they help to maintain/repair your joints so have to benefit somehow.I have read of a few suppliments - like pineapple extract that are meant to be very good - I will get the names of them all - the dose and what they are supposed to do an post it on this thread later.I've taken glucosamnine and have to admit, when I wasn't taking MTX, it helped me tremendously. Once I adjust myself to the new meds and my body becomes accustomed to them, I'm all for going back on the glucosamine. It helps to repair damaged joints and if there is any damage there, I'm all for repairing it. They say that glucosamine does not help with RA, but I have solid proof that it does.
Before taking MTX, I was taking glucosamine and IBU only because I had such swelling and pain in the thumb on my right hand, so much that I could never bend it. After taking glucosamine for 4 weeks, I was able to bend my thumb and extend it to all locations... BEAUTIFUL! The ony thing that I've heard was that it's not good for your stomach for long periods of time, so you should take a break from it...

I take glucosamine, four fish oils daily, MSN, calcium and COQ10 on top of multi vitamin, folic acid and all the chemicals that my rd is prescribing DMARDS, NSAIDS, STEROIDS and NARCOTICS !!!!!Kathy, I will definately have to look into the chromium picolinate. I don't want to sound vain but I am worried about gaining a lot of weight while on Predisone. When it comes down to it, my quality of life is more important than my weight but it would be nice to try and keep if off if possible. It has taken me over 2 years to slowly lose around 38 lbs. so I would hate to start over again!
Jackie, interesting about the glucosamine. I know this might sound silly but I first got the idea of taking it from my dog, lol. A few months ago his left back leg went out, a week later the other back leg went out. The poor dog could not walk. He is 11 years old and has always been in perfect health. The Vet said because of his age he had arthritis and that caused his ligaments in his legs to weakened and tore. The vet put him on pain pills and glucosamine. I did some research on the net about the glucosamine for him and found out some good info on how it can repair joints. He has bounced back great. He is not even walking with a limp anymore! I figured when I got diagnosed, couldn't hurt for humans!
