First off i should say iam new here, im from canada, iam having a real battle with this ra. Iam 31 yrs old & was diagnosed 6 yrs ago, since then i have lived in pain straight.I tryed naproxen& i threw up, tryed plaquinil and it did nothing, i tryed a cortisone shot & it was useless, iam on sulfasalazine & im still not doing well!! Doc wants to try methotrexate, iam terrified but this living in constant pain, just is not worth living.  Im stressed & thought i would ask for help.... J   Hi Jen, firstly welcome, I am like you, this is my 8th year, I cannot take any DMARDS or antiinflammatories, except a very low dose of Methotrexate, and prednisone tabs, varying from 10mg to 50mg at different times.  This disease as you know is so wacky, it is unique to everyone, no two people are the same!  All I can say from experience is try the Methotrexate, what have you got to lose?  I had to stop mine for 2 weeks due to a chest infection and boy did I notice the difference, I can't believe 10mg can do that much.  I know how desperate this disease can make us feel, just come on here for understanding, compassion and friends, we all rejoice with you on your good days and commiserate with you on your bad days.  It always makes us feel like we belong and that we have a "cyber - family" best of luck Jen, hugs from Janie. janiefx2008-05-02 02:44:04Hi Jen, welcome :)  Sorry that you haven't been able to get any relief so far.  I would give the mtx a go if I were you.  Many of us here take it, some along with biologics, and have gotten good results.  It didn't do a whole lot for me by itself, but together with enbrel it made my life pretty normal again.Welcome! Don't fear the methotrexate it's been around forever and the doctor monitors your blood very regularly so if any problems were to occur they would get you right off of it. It works well for me.I hope you feel better soon. I am starting Mxt this week so we'll see how it goes. I'll send you a cyber hug so it won't hurt so bad.

Hi and welcome.  I am fairly new to the boards too and am on plaquinel.  If that wasn't working for me, I think I'd give the mtx a try just for the relief. They monitor you closely while on it but I do understand how these decisions can be difficult.  Good luck to you and gentle hugs...hiking_galHi Jen...welcome!

I've been taking methotrexate for about 16 years now and it's worked very well for me.  I'v had no problems with it either.  I was very afraid of taking mtx, but the soreness and stiffness got so bad I had to give it a try.
I hope it works for you!  Good luck!

jenjen76: Am genuinely saddened to hear you're in such pain and that the meds. you've tried so far just haven't done it for you.

For many the mtx has been successful but for me it was nothing short of a nightmare. However, if you try it and it works - great! If not, there are other meds.

For me AP has given me life back in every way.  * Gentle Hugs *
hi jen welcome to you.. i have ra 13yrs methotrexate plus prednisone 7.5mg
helped to keep me in work when i first got ra. i had no side effects from it then.
it worked for 4yrs..i took folic acid whith mtx which helps against any nausea.
i have read that mtx and folic acid may allso help protect against heart attack
and strokes..i hope it works well for you.
Boney AP gave me my life back too.  Check out www.roadback.org for more info.

How long have you been on sulphasalazine?  Did you know that's a really MILD antibiotic?  Please tell me you are on probiotics because you REALLY need to protect your gut and replace any of the good bacteria you're killing off with an admittedly weak antibiotic.  If you want to run an experiment on yourself - go to Whole Foods and/or any vitamin store and find their refrigeration section.  Find the probiotics with the most strains and the most live cultures at encapsulation.  Start slow - one cap a day.  Watch your BM's to make sure you're not too loose or to constipated.  Up the dose when you are no longer, gassy, bloated, crampy.  I'm betting that in 2 weeks you will see a noticible improvement and may decide to NOT switch meds.

P.S.  Yes, I know it sounds funny to say you're gonna get 'icky' on the probiotics, but it's only your body being confused by getting what it needs.  Hang on for 2 weeks.  Please?
hi kelstev 16yrs on mtx. wow. thats really good going.
i wish we all had a med that we could take for so long..
it is good to see and gives some hope.

wishing you well.. Thanks guys for the positive words, sorry for my ignorance but what is AP??  So does ra really kill u? or is it all these damn medications that screw up differnt parts of your inners? Living like this is a nightmare so iam pretty much ready to try anything, im just not ready to die yet, mind u some days iam so depressed i just dont care. I had suffered depression way before this RA but now life just seems to be a nightmare, between anxiety attacks & killer pain & fatigue, man does it ever stop, oh also prednesone made me gain 25lbs since christmas!! .  It's about AP - treating this monster with antibiotics.  RA does kill - but - hopefully not any of us!  The meds are scary.  RA is scary.  So we go thru this together.  Pred didn't work for me.

Hugs and more hugs,

Pip
