TMI Type Question | Arthritis Information

So I am on 15 mg (max dosage) of Mobic. I have very low blood pressure and normal cholesterol.  I don't exactly understand what risk Mobic poses to the heart, etc..  But I'm wondering if birth control pills would add to that risk?  I know they have cardiovascular risk as well.

I don't really feel like adding another pill to my morning routine but I am suffering through awful cramps right now.

Edited to add that I tried to bring this up with RD but wasn't clear enough and he basically said oh don't worry about that you're young.
KatieG2008-05-06 06:35:04There are huge links to hormones and the onsets of these diseases and BCP may help you.  The biggest question should be...hows your BP?  It that's up - no BCP's in my opinion as the risk is too much.  I intend to start HRT when needed because I believe the benefits vastly outweigh the risks.  Also, if you do start, at age 35 they start watching you like a hawk and will take you off at the first sign of problems.

Thanks!  I had not been on BCP because I had a partial molar pregnancy before my first two successful pregnancies, and somewhere I read there had been one study in which long term use of BCP (5+ years) slightly increased the risk of molar pregnancy.  Not nearly enough for doctors to tell patients not to take them, but, having had a molar pregnancy before, my risk was already up to 1 in 100 for a recurrence, which, thank god, I haven't had.

Well now we are thinking about a third child in 4-5 years if at all, so it makes sense to go on them, especially being on MTX.

My BP is fine right now.  I just had this TIA-like episode last July that no one has been able to explain, so that it what has me antsy.  It could have been an inner ear infection though.  No one knows.  Ugh.
Mobic heart risk - my understanding is that is the Cox2 part, like Vioxx, Bextra, etc.  It does not affect everybody, from what I understand.  Hubby reacted to Bextra, and I was worried when they put my daughter on Mobic, in case it ran in families.  The pharm went out of her way to warn me about side effects, too, but the ped said so many people react to drugs it doesn't keep them from using them on other family members.  It was hard on my daughter's stomach, but that was all. Katie - I'd be more concerned by the TIA.  You need to maybe say no to BCP's.  If something goes wrong, a TIA is harder to fix get my drift?

Have you looked into another form of birth control that is non-hormonal? non-hormonal includes IUD - copper or Mirena IUD (inter-uterine device). I believe IUD's help with cramping and make periods lighter. Not sure.

I have a copper IUD, and mine are lighter & sometimes shorter, but I get a couple of months out of the year where I have cramping and a little heavier period.
