What the ----? Mouth sores?? | Arthritis Information

OK... I've posted here before.  Been to see a couple of RDs lately and they agree that I have some sort of RA stuff going on.... RF factor positive, C-reactive elevated, CCP negative, MRI showed mild synovitis and mild swelling in MCP and wrist.  i am not on any DMARDs yet, had to make sure I was not prego before I started, which i'm not, so i was going to start this coming week.  Right now, only on NSAIDs (diclofenac).  I recently started getting mouth sores, on the inside of my bottom lip, like canker sores.  I'm sort of worried.  It's been about 10 days and I've had 2 of them.

I googled whether mouth sores are common with RA and they seem to be, but only if you're on DMARDS.  Of course the stuff I googled said that mouth sores are more common with lupus.  my ANA was negative....  but now of course I'm wondering if I could have lupus, since I'm not 100% in the RA bag since my joints are not swollen to the naked eye.

Any insight??????

sorry to freak out.  I'm new to this.

Here is a little fact I have ran across a few times when I was googling my symptoms back in October '07.

less than 5% of people can have a negative ANA test, and still have lupus.
joonie2008-05-09 22:29:48I don't have swollen joints to the naked eye but I have RA.
As for the mouth sores, I get the roof of my mouth all tender on occasion but as you said, I put that down to the drugs.
Sorry I can't be of any further help but others will be able to fill you in.
Ok... I really do not get mouth sores. But some times... the roof of my mouth will peel for a few days. But I have not had that happen in a few months.  Have you been stressed out lately?  I always got mouth sores during or just after finals week in college.  Even went to the ER once because it hurt so bad.  I was told to take B vitamins and try to relax.  At the time, I was on the pill, which tends to deplete B vitamins, and I was pretty much living on ramen noodles, raviolios, pizza, Coke, and beer.  Not the most balanced diet..  Like I was going to suggest, they recommend folic acid and probiotics like yogurt or acidophilus.  To build onto JasmineRain's suggestion, I'd look for a good B complex with folic acid or if things continue, ask your doctor for prescription strength folic acid, especially if you're going to be starting DMARD's too.

It's ok to freak out a bit...there's a lot to figure out.  I hope you get some answers and that you find some relief soon.
Another thing - some people are sensitive to sodium lauryl sulfate, which is a common detergent in toothpaste.  It can irritate the mouth sores and make it harder to get rid of them.  There are toothpastes available which don't have it.  I believe "Tom's of Maine" is one. JasmineRain2008-05-09 23:21:27I've always had them and now have them more frequently from the MTX. I use a warm rinse of salt water to get rid of them.hi cdndream i get a lot of mouth sores ulcers.. i use daktarin oral gel
which is a paste. prescribed by gp it is very good.
Boney

I haven't read all replies cause I have to get ready for work... but, before DX I had mouth sores... in my inner lips and sides of mouth....   I have low amounts of saliva and am always drinking water...  I believe I have Sjogen's as well.. but no DX.. My eyes are very dry, I have to put saline up my nose = also very dry.. and constantly drink water ...

Only in a flare did I have very swollen joints... otherwise only minor swelling that wouldn't be noticeable to the naked uneducated eye...  My ANA was 1:640... but that is not necessary and it fluctuates depending on disease activity.

Good luck to you..
Google mouth sores and autoimmune.  They are definitely related.  I get them too and blame them on all the autoimmune crap going on in my body.

My daughter(11) is currently having many joint issues and is being seen by a pediatric rheumatologist.  She also constantly has mouth sores.  They are common with autoimmune issues and it really sucks for her!  I am hoping the drs. can get a firm diagnosis for her soon and start some treatment!
