Toothache... | Arthritis Information

Hi all, have any of you ever suffered from toothache as a result of RA?  I've had very bad toothache for 24 hours now, been to the dentist today as an emergency, he did xrays, and said there was no problem with the teeth themselves, but that both my top and bottom gums were inflammed, and that was the cause of my pain.  Is this being caused by my RA?  Any feedback would be great..............hope your all well today.May-

I can't say my problem is linked to RA because I asked my RD and he said no....however it's an awful coincidence that since I got RA all of a sudden I have episodes when my whole mouth (I mean teeth- every last one) just throb and ache and for a period of time and just as fast as it appears- it goes away. They are also super-sensitive to hot & cold.

I had dental appointments during my onset for a crown and there were no other problems present at that time. That was Dec. and this started in February.

Good luck with finding out what's wrong and getting some relief!
May- what meds are you on.Try swishing with warm salt water. That should help pretty quick if you have any sort of gum infection or irritation.may, you cold be grinding your teeth. have you asked your dentist if there is wear and tear from grinding. A night guard made by a dentist may benefit you. My teeth ache when I don't wear mine.   Also, have you had your heart checked. Symptoms of heart attack are different in women. Teeth aching is one symptom. Please check that out. good luck. may, also try sensitive tooth paste. it takes about 3 weeks to work, but works great on the hot, cold, and sweet sensitivities.I have times when every tooth in my mouth hurts.  I have no dental problems--I do not have gum disease but everytime after they are cleaned at the dentists--they ache for about a week.  I was told a long time ago to use Listerine (I use any kind of mouthwash) to rinse after I brush.  Also my teeth will ache and then stop just as you described.  I had read a post much earlier by someone else experiencing the same thing.  Jaw pain is a sign of heart disease but jaw pain is different than aching teeth.  When I have bad pain throughout my body, I get referred pain in my teeth.  But that wasn't with inflammation of the gums, so I'm not sure it applies here.Taken from medicine net:

Sometimes, a toothache may be caused by a problem not originating from a tooth or the jaw. Pain around the teeth and the jaws can be symptoms of diseases of the heart (such as angina or heart attack), ears (such as inner or external ear infections), and sinuses (air passages of the cheek bones). For example, the pain of angina (inadequate supply of oxygenated blood to the heart muscle because of narrowing of the arteries to the heart) is usually located in the chest or the arm. However, in some patients with angina, a toothache or jaw pain are the only symptoms of their heart problem. Infections and diseases of the ears and sinuses can also cause pain around the teeth and jaws. Therefore, evaluations by both dentists and doctors are sometimes necessary to diagnose medical illnesses causing "toothache."

Please don't ignore the toothache in the absence of dental problems. I had precisely the issue described once by may. Clearing up the inflammation made the pain go away. Taking good care of your gums, including flossing is very important.

There is one other possibility. I get pain in my mouth frequently lately and I recently had  Xrays done.  It appears to be due to my FM.

Desensitizing toothpaste won't work on inflamed gums.  Some studies have shown coenzyme Q10 to help with gum inflammation.  My husband has periodontal disease.  His dentist tells all his gum disease patients to take Co-Q10.  There are also toothpastes available with coenzyme Q10 in them.  I don't know if that has any benefit or not.
