How many have a podiatrist? | Arthritis Information

My foot xrays don't show change but I am having a lot of pain and my gait has changed so my primary care dr is sending me to a podiatrist. Does this seem to make sense? I hate to add another specialist but if something can be done to improve the situation I will be glad to go. Only real change is that I have developed flat feet and am getting bunions.  Let me know what you think.

on your feet...
orthotic inserts do give me support.

Laker, Give it a try.  Perhaps he/she can suggest an orthotic or brace that would reduce pain, give you support and make it a little more comfortable walking.  I haven't seen a podiatrist, but have seen an orthopedic surgeon for baaaaad ankles, he suggested a brace which makes it less painful to walk and has enabled me to delay ankle surgery.  Yahoo!  So good luck to you, I hope the podiatrist can help you.  Take care.

I have had 2--fired both.  I had bunon surgery on one foot.
about that time the RA really kicked into gear and he treated me for Plantar Facitis--which I never had.  Second one fitted me to orthotics that were made out of a hard fiberglass material.  They made my feet hurt even more!!! I threw them out.  Then I saw a third  guy who just fits orthotics and he made up another pair that were cork and a softer materials.  They are better but after I wear then, my feet just ache--in fact, they are so sore, you cannot even touch my feet.  However, they do feel good when I am walking.  I guess I am trying to say--they didn't help me much.  You have to decide --if you have the time--it might not hurt-you might have better luck.  My insurance covered the orthotics.  Then I saw a chiropractor for feet too.  That didn't help either.  Again this was before I was diagnosed with RA.
I am seeing a podiatrist as I was having trouble with my ankles which I have found out have synovitis and tendonitis.  I now have orthotics as he feels the arthritis has caused me to have fallen arches and I must say they have helped a lot.Hi,

I have problems with my feet, especially when I first get out of bed the pain almost makes me fall over.  What I have found that helps is exercise using a water bottle that is frozen in the freezer to use everyday.  I roll my feet over this and also my 11 yr old gave me this one to try.
I bought these dryer balls which are spikey rubber(used in dryer to eliminate the use of fabric softeners)anyway, I have been rolling my feet on those and it feels great.
This helps with the pain in the long run because my feet are feeling better.
Hope this helps!
I only see a podiatrist for a script for new orthotics, but have had tons of foot surgeries, and for that, i would pick an ortho/foot/ankle specialist

I can tell you, having flat feet, since birth, if your walk is off, it's going to affect your back, and having pronating feet, can really mess up you knees..

I have to have orthotics to walk, and have finally found the correct pair, soft, cork, because those of us with RA, seem to have tender undersides of feet.

It's very important to have enough support in your shoes, and the orthotics can easily fit into extra depth athletic shoes, depends on what kind of orthotics, and how much support you need.

good luck! ...yes, tendon's can get inflamed, rupture, if ankles are not supportedaimee112008-05-15 09:07:32Forestmaiden,

Thanks for those good ideas.  31 yrs of RA has taken its toll on my feet and that frozen bottle of water idea sounds especially good today as we're having a heat wave -- 4 straight days of 100 degree weather.
