I'd still try a bar of soap first:
Though drugmakers portrayed their products as a sure-fire cure for symptoms, the reality isn’t so certain. People who took the drugs, known as nonergot dopamine agonists, were 36 percent more likely to respond to the treatment than people who took placebos, according to an analysis of 14 randomized controlled trials presented this week in the May/June issue of the Annals of Family Medicine.

But the range varied considerably in the trials, none of which lasted more than 12 weeks. In one trial, for instance, 17 of 32 people, or 53 percent, who took ropinirole responded to the drug, compared to 17 of 33 people, or 52 percent, who took sugar pills. In another study, the difference was 61 percent versus 52 percent.

There’s such a huge placebo effect,” Schwarz said.

Suzanne2008-05-15 11:30:27Good lord, that made me laugh!

Hey, anybody interested.  When I added in magnesium and potassium, my RLS went away except for the night before mense.  Lets see if another month and that goes away too.

Pip
additional magnesium, potassium, ferrous sulfate, and extra C have not helped me.. nor have hot baths and massages....... I've tried EVERYTHING.. believe me..

When you cannot sleep for more than 4 hours a night.. and you'll do anything for sound sleep...  and not to be awakened by your legs kicking about....you'd be glad there IS a product like Requip..

and if there's a generic... all the more wonderful!!
babs102008-05-16 11:01:11 Four generics on the way, it says.

Just curious - have you tried soap?  I've seen posts that spouses put it in the bed and it worked, so the person can't say it was a placebo effect.

I haven't slept without waking in usually 4 hours since 1995.  I've been experimenting on fixing my RLS which was gone but came back during that Thyroid/salsalate debacle.  I don't want to take the meds because from most of my research the body just learns how to go around it.  Like with PPI's and nasal mists.  So far, the things that have helped the most are the Whole Lemon Olive Oil Drink about 2 hours before bed and the mag and pot, of which I am usually low on.

Maybe it will help for you.

If you like lemon.  I hate it.  Have to gag it down.

This all originated for me because I was unable to get to sleep.  I'd lie in bed for HOURS and not fall off.  THEN, if I did sleep it was very short stretches of time.  I need to work.  I am in the securities business and my job is high stress and high concentration at times while trading.  I was really unreliable at that time.  I would do anythign to get sleep!! (well, almost) and I hate Requip... I can't tell you how much.  *sigh*  I take a half a mg around 6 pm and then a full at 9ish ...  I would LOVE to stop that.

I will try the "soap"  the Lemon Olive Oil drink (I can't imagine that is an easy go) what's the proportions??
Wow, we were separated at birth!  Stress and no sleep!  Yep, that's how I got this.

I just saw some sleep study info saying that lying in bed and obsessing (that would be me) is part of the reason we get sick.  Duh!  Can't heal if you never get to that deep sleep about 4 - 6 hours into it.

Did Suzanne say which soap worked?  Cz I'm going to try that the next night before cycle thing.

Whole Lemon/Olive Oil Drink

1 whole lemon, cut up, rind, pips and all into blender.
1 cup water
1 Tbsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil - the above are the only 'required' ingredients.
Couple heaping Tbsps frozen OJ (I used cherry)
Stevia to taste (really sweet, use only a few grains) I admit I used Splenda -shoot me!
Hit Blend - strain thru strainer, put into glass, if neuropathy is present, add 1 heaping Tbsp
     of lecithin.  Stir.  Drink

DO NOT MAKE A DOUBLE BATCH - this stuff gets ugly bitter if left to sit.

APers use this to cut inflammation of a herx.  It really works - my FIL started AP and his feet were swelled and my hubby was visiting him for 2 weeks - in less than a week the swelling is almost all gone.  So, if you use this for 'inflammation' - take it in the AM.

If you're using it to sleep - I find about an hour before bed helps because otherwise I get up to use the loo an hour later.

The original research is at www.keephopealive.org

Also, the people at Whole Foods told me that the best absorption is with things that end in 'ate'.  So, I bought was BioCitrate Magnesium and Potassium Asporotate.

Finally, another thing I've noticed is that the nights I don't get all my probiotics in thru the day are the nights I'm a lighter sleeper.  Since I'm on ABX 2 X a day on MWF - those are the days I'm most likely to be a moron and somehow skip them.  If you decide to retry the mag and pot and you're at the vitamin store - pick up some of the refrigerated probiotics.  I use Solaray Multidophilus 12 but it doesn't have to be that.  Anything with multi-strains and as many live encapsulations as possible.

Because probiotics help us pull the vitamins and nutrients out of our foods, you might try everything again for 2 months and see what happens.

All I know is since I started this, and it was working, then not, them working until...what...I got enough in my system...that now I'm sleeping a good SOLID 6 hours a night with some nights hitting 7 and 1/2!  Wooohooo.  I still feel a bit like Rocky Racoon with the perma-circles under my eyes - but I'm definitely thinking a LOT more clearly and except of the night before mense - have been doing this a SOLID 2 weeks without doing that 'damn, it's 4 in the morning, what can I do now' thing going on.

Hugs,

Pip
Soap is any bar of soap, from what I've read.  I know it sounds totally crazy, but so many people swear by it.  You've got it around, and if not 'cause you're into body wash, then swipe some next hotel stay!  It cannot hurt!

The 'spouse' stories really made an impression on me -   it's not in anybody's head, if their legs are keeping a spouse awake; if a spouse is desperate enough to sneak out of bed and sneak in a bar of soap, and then it works, it's not placebo effect, either (unless it 'placebo'd' the spouse, but the way the posts were written, the sufferer had a good night's sleep, too!)

Good luck, I hope it helps!
The soap trick works for my kids and their leg cramps.  As long as their is a bar of soap under the sheets they never wake up with them. Take those little bars from the hotel.  They are the perfect size!!!
