Why Me :( Dr. Called | Arthritis Information

I shouldn't have had my hopes up.

Today i got a call that with arava, my liver enzymes are through the rough.

I did learn that naproxen does it too and i did start taking naproxen last month, so it could be helping the rise.

I need the naproxen just to try and get through the day.  I don't want pain killers because i don't want to fall asleep.  I can't take ultram due to my paxil.

They are rotating me 20mg one day 10mg the next for 3 weeks until i test again.

This is the last drug i know of, i have horrible chemical reactions to all the others and can't take biologics due to infections that don't go away.

I read ibuprofen raises the liver test too.

What do i do?

They took me off of prednisone and now i am in horrible pain and alone.
How much naproxen do you take?  Was that 20 mg?  I use to take 200 mg twice a day, but after many years, it took its toll on my stomach so I've since stopped.

bubba, what about something to lower your liver enzymes, like SAM-e or milk thistle (I think that's the one)?  It might be worth a try before giving up on these meds.

BTW, candy is a great med...gummy bears are really good for nausea! I'm so sorry you're in such distress...I can certainly understand why.

Did you try all the biologics?

Have you tried AP (antibiotics)?
Ultram might be worth trying something other than paxil. Mostly a matter of dosage to avoid serotonin syndrome. I can't take biologics due to a returning infection, the himura lady stated that i would die if i took it.  She said that infections spread extremely quickly with all biologics, that i should stick with the other drugs.

I read that the toxicity of ultram and paxil is about 16% of people on one of the sites, i wonder if they were taken at different times if it cancels toxicity out.

I didn't know Sam-e lowered the liver problems.

Are you serious?!?! I can't believe someone actually told you that...

I'm sorry what you've tried hasn't worked for you. I think once you're off the meds for a while it gives your liver time to "heal." Maybe it's time for a new approach though - I second AP. (But I'm not a doctor or anything.

I hope you get some much needed relief quickly!! *hugs*
Sorry if I'm being too nosey...but, who is the "humira lady" and what did your doctor tell you?  I had a problem with a recurring infection while taking MTX and was referred to an infectious disease specialist to try to resolve before abandoning the MTX.Bubba-
I had to take another drug (Sporonox) that is very tough on the liver, too (before my RA) and my Pharmacist and Dr. told me to take Milk Thistle also called Sylmarin.  I have taken it while on MTX, too.  My liver test have been normal (so far)  I do think it helps and according to my Dr., it doesn't hurt!

Just an FYI, my thoughts are with you.

Amy
I'm so sorry you're going through this now.  Please try to remember that as long as you are here with us on this board, you are never alone.  [QUOTE=bubbagump]I can't take biologics due to a returning infection, the himura lady stated that i would die if i took it.  She said that infections spread extremely quickly with all biologics, that i should stick with the other drugs. Thanks everyone.

the Hemura lady i talked too was at the company itself.  They have a program from the inside (it was their program, not one of the other ones).  She was working with me for financial assistance and was the person who reads over my medical records to determine if i am able to get it or not.

She explained how the biologics spread infections at a very fast rate and since there is no cure for me to get rid of my infection, it wouldn't be able to be stopped from spreading.
[QUOTE=bubbagump]Thanks everyone.

The humira lady sounds a bit like an alarmist to me, and I agree with everyone who suggests you speak to your doc about it.  Biologics do not "spread infection"...they merely supress the immune system and thus, infections take longer to heal.  The same warnings come with all the biologics.  I take enbrel, and every winter it seems, I get a bout of bronchitis.  I simply go off the enbrel until the lung infection clears.  Honestly, it does take about a week longer than it did to get over these bronchial episodes than when I was younger, but what doesn't?  Once the infection has cleared, I hop back on the enbrel train and I'm pain free again.

All the pros and cons should be carefully weighed when making this decision, and only you and your doctor can decide what is best for you.  Your pain can't be felt by the humira lady, who probably has very healthy joints.  Don't give up on biologics until you've thoroughly discussed them with your doc.

Best of luck, and gentle hugs to you.
You aren't alone.  Lots of good people here who truly understand.

It has been advertised as supporting healthy liver function.  Here's some of the research:

Anyway, I find it interesting to note that with all the meds I've been on, as many as 15 prescriptions at a time, the only time I had elevated liver enzymes was when I went off my SAM-e supplement because of concern it would interfere with mtx.  Ironically enough, because of liver enzymes, I had to discontinue mtx.

Also, SAM-e is supposed to be helpful with fibro, joint pain, and depression, so for me it's an all-around good choice.

I have heard great things on this board about milk thistle for elevated liver enzymes but have never tried it.
i am sorry bubba i wish i could make it all go away.  be like bewitched and twitch my nose and you be cured.  i have no answers at all.  they have run out of drugs with me too.  the doctor said take as much aspirin as you want with a meal.  yeeee haw!!!!   how many of them little pills you think i can swallow  Maybe try Piroxocam in place of the Naproxen? My RD just switched mr after about 5 years on the Naproxen. He said it is much easier on the tummy, liver, and kidneys.

Might be worth mentioning to your RD.
Thanks all.

I did talk with my doctor about it and she fully agreed with the drug lady.
I am sorry bubbagump.

Much and many hugs to you.
Thank you Joonie.

I haven't been offered gold.  I am on arava, but nothing has happened yet besides elivated liver function lol.  But it hasn't helped and it's been around 8 months now.Seems you often get bad news. I hate the allergic connections that many of have with RA. I pray that a solution is not far off for you. Heal quickly. I am so sorry that you are having these problems. What options do you have for pain control?
