Stupid question about knee swelling | Arthritis Information

I have not always been as swollen as i am this year. Always had multiple joint involvment just less swelling.

Anyway the back of my knees are really bad. The reumy said a couple of months back as to be expected. I just asumed it is RA swelling like in the front of my knees.

The ER doc said wow why don't you have those removed. He said they are backers cyst.
I had a bakers cyst before. It was deep inside my knee. Very hard and golf ball sized. What i have now is like a large orange at least in the back of my knees.

I just asume that it is the RA swelling as i have swelling above the knees in front and of course in the knee on the knee and under the knee now. And lots of other places. So call me stupid is it regular RA swelling or could that doctor be right. Hmmm then i would have cyst everywhere. LOL I tend to not believe docs all the time.

Hi Milly, as far as I know Bakers cysts are usually behind the knee, and perhaps that is causing everything else to be pushed around causing swelling?  I hope you get some relief soon, hugs Janie. I get bakers cyst, and they are behind the knee just as you've described. They can drain off the fluid. I get cortisone injections and it helps mine....but I've never had one a large as you've described.

Draining yours would likely make a big difference. It's just fluid that's built up....and it sounds as if you've got a lot of it.

Good Luck.
Wow i guess it wasn't a stupid question. Both knees are the same. But i am flaring. My wrist are puffed out to the side. Shoulders and top of back neck joint. The swelling is so just filling up my legs. Told my son and brother today an amputation would sound like a good idea about now. That is a double amputation from the knees down. LOL Sounded like a good idea while waiting for the pain meds to kick in.

I so hoped i could aviod cyst. Never even occurred to me that was what they where. To big i thought for cyst. I had a giant ganglion once. Had to have two surgeries to get rid of it. Draining was not working. Tryed draining it eight times. Cortisone made it harden up. I have a whole in my leg and a big bumpy scar where they had to cut part of the tendon all the way down my shin to get rid of it. So nightmare on cyst part two and three i guess at the same time.
I am getting to be a pretty tough cookie. It just doesn't even seem like a big deal at this piont anymore. So much else in life is going on. Custody hearing is this week for my brothers baby. It is all so unbelievable. We are just in shock but i don't want to talk about it. Alot of stress is all and just so very sad. Just that his wife moved so far away. A young baby shouldn't have a distance of 1,000 miles between his parents. There is no good soulution for the baby to have both his parents under a circumstance like that. Sad for the baby.
Some how i am a happy person. Nothing shocks me anymore. Whats life without a couple of giant cyst. Sounds normal to me. LOL
 Prayers to all.
I have a large (as big as they get, as described by ortho doc) behind my knee. They can be caused by RA alone or a torn meniscus. My ortho doc said he'd never "remove" one as they would just come back. He does plan to inject it (and possibly drain it) when I have the arthoscopic surgery to repair the torn meniscus. As a result of the meniscus tear, I have quite a bit of swelling in the front of the knee as well. The way I understand it, Baker's cysts are from synovial fluid that escapes the knee joint. Ok.. I've not had the baker's cysts as yet *crossfingers*  but I have a funny lump above my left knee.. I feel it when I stand and step up or down stairs.. actually whenever I bend my leg I feel it when I straighten.. it moves kind of..  Now, I had this same thing as a 21 year old.. and it detached and went down my leg.. (I know freaky) and my PCP had NO idea what it was....
anyone who can help w/ what this is would be cool...  I see RD on friday if it's still there I'll bring it up..
Sorry for your cysts, Milly.. I hope it isn't too much trouble for you!!
Well i had a tear in the left knee years ago. Had the little bakers cyst that is common with that. Then i got the giant ganglion and it blew up the bakers cyst. So this would be the kind that goes along with RA. As i had my tear fixed in the left knee. Thats my guess scince in both knees. Well i have alot of that synoval fliud. My knees are fantastic at leaking fliud it seems. Everyone has a talent. This must be mine. Hmmm I thought with Sjorgrens you are supposed to have less Synoval fluid. So as usual things are not making scence. I hate it when things do not make scence.
