Hey all.....I have a question for you! I am a fourth years Honours Psychology student and I am currently working on my thesis. I have eight months to complete it, and it needs to answer a research question of my choosing. I was hoping to relate my thesis to RA because it is obviously of great personal interest and importance to me. At this point I'm not sure of what EXACTLY my topic will  be, but I'm looking to do something about the correlation between RA and emotional health. In order to write this thesis, I need to conduct a type of experiment, or questionnaire/survey etc. in order to get subjects to test out my theory. I have yet to clear my idea with my prof, but I wanted a complete proposal to take in to her. So....my question to all you RA patients is this: if I were to post a questionnaire of some sort on this message board, how many of you would be keen to answer my questions and assist me in my thesis? I would much appreciate it and think it would be a great way to find out more info on RA. I would be happy to pass along my findings to any of you if you're curious. Also, keep in mind that your personal information will be kept confidential. Thanks so much, let me know what you think!

Britenny

PS in case any of you didn't know, I post on this board and have RA....just in case any of you thought I just randomly found this site for help with school work!!

Britenny

Sure no problem Britney.  I will support you on your thesis if you like.

Britenny,  I remember what a pain in the ass my thesis was.  I changed topics three times

Have you thought about quality of life and fatigue issues in people with RA? It seems that a lot of the studies they've done with cancer patients is being used to asses these issues in people with RA to try to make things better for us. I'd be happy to share the research I've done if you are interested.

Also, I think Roxy's right about the new forum because of the polling function.   http://www.rafriends.com/forums/

Definitely interested here.I'd be glad to help Britenny

Count me in! Would be very interested.   Wouldn't
mind doing in an email either.

I'm in! I'm doing my project this year too and I know how much trouble it is having to find subjects and conducting research. Good luck with it! It sounds like a really good idea!

Thank you all so much! It's so great to hear that so many of you will support my thesis idea....I think it will be a great way to figure out more information about something that concerns me, while at the same time getting a good grade!!!!

I haven't heard of RA friends...can someone tell me more about that?

Also...I like the idea of pain vs fatigue....and would love to hear more about it! Feel free to email me at any time.

Thanks so much for your support! I'll keep you posted!

Yes I'll take your survey.

Just a thought, my internal med doc said, "Every dx of RA should come with a script for anti-depressents."

Marian....that's an interesting thought....I wonder why that is.....which came first the chicken or the egg? Ie. did the depression/emotional issues come first and therefore become a trigger to RA.....or did the RA provoke feelings of depression/anxiety etc? I know that I personally have been on antidepressants on and off for the past five years, but I always thought that was a trigger factor in me getting RA...the fact that I was dealing with a lot of emotional stress, but who knows, maybe the RA was first.

Anyone have any thoughts?

I don't know.

Chronic pain, even if not acute pain, is a terrible thing. It just wears a person out and dooooown I gooooooo. It is chemical!

Having a positive attitude is a major help, it is chemical too.

Stress is my number 1 trigger, I think.

Id love to help

Hi Britenney,

RA Friends is another forum that was set up by a few people here at Arthritis Insight as this board goes down quite often and in the event if it stays permanently down, we needed to make an additional spot where we can still keep in touch with all of the people we have met here.  Here is the link, http://www.rafriends.com/forums/index.php please feel free to drop by and register.  Most of us are now dual registered...here and there.

We also have a chat room set up at MSN

http://groups.msn.com/RAFriends

some of us chat there quite often so feel free to stop by.  I think you just need a net passport with MSN or a hotmail account.

Hope to see you there!

Jackie

i like to help count me  in also

Hi...sorry everyone, I put that my email address was britennyhelstrum@yahoo.com but it's actually britennyhelstrum@yahoo.ca

Sorry if there was any confusion. And Tiana I think it was, I'd definitely be interested in your previous research. Thanks guys!

Britenny

Late to the party but I'd be glad to help as well. As a kid I participated in all sort of experiments, studies, thesises (thesii ?), etc. Some of you may have even seen my hands in medical books back in the 70's and early 80's.

I'm not sure if you nailed your topic down yet but one area that has always interested me (this is what my RA is attributed to) is the role that immunizations has played in the onset of RA (JRA). I know here in the US families are forced to immunize their babies. Kids have to be immunized before going to school. My parents had to fight tooth an nail against the school board in order to get my younger sister into school without the immunizations. After having gone through what they did with me how could they take the risk with her?

Anywho... the emotional impact of having a disabled child caused by a government mandate could be an interesting area.
