OT What a Rip Off from Best Buy | Arthritis Information

Snopes claims that this is true.
Got this from a friend. Another store just taking advantage of us. See for yourself. Do business accordingly. They can't sell an opened item as new, no matter how careful you are with the packaging.  It's not as simple as simply placing it back on the shelf.  It has to be run through quality control to make sure it still functions properly, have any of your personal information wiped, and make sure all manuals, cords and accessories are there.

The restock costs (both decreased value and labor) will get passed on to the customer.  Whether that is passed on to ALL customers in the form of higher prices, or a modest restock fee, is up to the store.
That's just amazing!! I never did understand restocking fees

and just as you said ,they just put it back on the shelf.
A company I worked for had a 33% restocking fee, I would
tell my customers to put their purchase on a credit card so
if things did not work out the credit card company would help them.
I did not stay long at that company because they were not
customer friendly and it sounds like Best Buy is not either.
Another thing... you can often find great bargains in the refurb/open stock/returns at the big electronics stores.  They usually discount them 10% or more, and as a bonus, they've been run through quality control both at the factory and again when they were prepped for resale. hi gg most stores here in the uk are a nightmare for returns mainly on
faulty goods . never seen a return fee.
years ago we would get 3yrs warranty now it is 1yr The paltry warranties are from the manufacturers and from consumers demanding lower prices... the store doesn't actually set the warranty (though they'll gladly sell you an extended warranty...)  I heard this before about Best Buy.  My friend received as a Christmas present, a set of electronic telephones that have a handset for just about every room in your house and one base.  Well, three of the six handsets did not work so she returned the whole thing in the original packaging.  You got it....15% restocking fee for something that was defective.  We don't shop there any more either.
AnnThat is a rip off,  I know here that they can reseal just about everything.  they make sure everything is there and ok then reseal and sale as new.  Best Buy has always been that way, I don't shop there because of it.  People tear open boxes to look at stuff or take it home and remove what they need and return,   I hate buying something and get home and parts are missing.  So I think they should take it back,  but only charge,  if it can't be reseal and sold as new with all parts.  Sad, things have gotten so bad.
Now   when I went to Food Max the other day because they are the cheapest,  and found out why,  it made me upset.   Meat,   big signs up giving price, when I started looking at the meat it was mark 2 and 3 dollors per lb. more them the sign, same meat. I had to dig down thru it and found one pack that was cheap and it was so fat that I didn't want it.  went to self check and rung up some tomatoes that was marked .19 a lb.  but it was over .00 for 2. so I looked at what they rung up as and it was .99 a lb.  It got me thinking, we stand back or unload our cart while they ring us up. Do we look at what we are paying for, Do you look at the price per lb. or just pick up a package, do you count your chance or are you like me just stuff it in your pocket, or notice and just don't say nothing.  It can add up after a while.  We paid enough without getting ripped off.  Sorry just needed to get that off my chest.

I've never had a problem returning a defective item at Best Buy.  I didn't even need my receipt, as it was kept on file.  Same at Circuit City.
Did you write a check for the item?  You get money back by refund if they are waiting for a check to be cleared around 30 days.  So refunds are sent by mail.

our Best buy has the 15% restock poster on the wall, so we notice it each time we shop, plus they put it on our recipts.

They never charged us locally for any returns.  We own a computer business, so we return a lot of items sometimes if the keyboard is faulty, mouse, computer etc. etc. but never charged us a fee.

I know some stores in bad neighborhoods do charge fees and tighten their belt on returns due to bounced checks, stolen credit card purchases etc.  I happened in my old neighborhood.

I forgot to mention that electronics chains do sell items like video game systems and only make about - a system.  So having a return and having to sell at open boxed price makes no profit which is why many charge fees on select products.
bubbagump2008-05-26 18:31:13Rusty, this also happens at Wal Mart.  The poor cashiers are the ones that take all the complaints for this.  Sales prices just do not get entered into the system I guess.  [QUOTE=rusty]That is a rip off,  I know here that they can reseal just about everything.  they make sure everything is there and ok then reseal and sale as new. I used to enjoy shopping at Best Buy and Circuit City. I really don't think their prices reflect a "Best Buy" anymore. I was there a couple weeks ago since someone had given me a gift card. A lot of prices appeared to be straight retail. I was going to buy some new computer speakers but not at list price. So I used it on a CD. I later bought the same speakers at Sam's Club for 30% less. Yea, it's not a place for impulse shopping, that's for sure!  When I do make a purchase at CC/BB, I research the prices on the web before I go.  I usually order my computer parts from newegg.com, but occasionally one of the big box stores will have a good sale, or it will be an emergency and I can't wait 3 to 5 days for shipping.

A couple years ago I was putting together a new computer system and could not find my bin of hard drive screws.  I went to the local Best Buy and asked the boys at the service counter ("Geek Squad") if I could buy a set of hard drive screws.  They gave them to me at no charge.  We chatted for a while about the new rig I was putting together.  I think they were amazed to see a she-geek old enough to be their mother.I haven't read all the comments but wanted to comment myelf.

I just today bought my husband a GPS at bestbuy for his birthday later this week. The sales person clearly informed me about the restocking fee. She said unopened I can bring it back for refund or exchange (14 days) if opened a 15% restocking fee applies. There was also a big sticker on the package that said the same thing in large BOLD font.

Being informed of the policy ahead of time I doubt it will be a problem and I feel like it's fair. I can understand once the packaging has been broke it devalues the item to an extent. They way his is packaged there's not way it could be packed back up properly and reselved.
