Milk Thistle etc.... | Arthritis Information

Hi again everyone.

Can any of you let me know if Milk Thistle is not recommended with any usual RA meds? I used to take it regularly when I lived in Italy ( and imbibed more wine than was probably good for me but hey! ....when in Rome. lolol) but have not for the past few years.
Also interested to know if there are any supplements that are a total no no with any meds.
This is all a learning curve so please bear with me if Im asking questions already answered a million times.

Coming into winter here and its pretty chilly tonight. Had a power cut an hour ago and the gas heating has gone out and hubster is out at a jazz show. And I cant light the gas, darn it! So its off to a warm bed methinks. Gotta love a wireless laptop too, it can keep me company until his lordship gets back. And gets the house warmed again.

Cheers....Lyn
It's a known LIver Cleanser. I take it and I'm on MTXi know of lots of people who take milk thistle especially ythose who are MTX or arava

you shouldn't take echinecea
I use milk thistle because of being on MXT.  LindyDid I hear that you should not use milk thistle if you are allergic to ragweed?Yes....Milk thistle belongs to the same family of plants as chrysanthemums, daisies, and ragweed. Individuals who are sensitive to those plants may also be sensitive to milk thistle.

I was advised to take milk thistle on a board when I had 3 elevated LFT's prior to starting AP and was terrified I'd spike (can happen) and they'd take me off.  Starting milt thistle brought my LFT's in line in only 2 1/2 months.  My AP doc says thats what did it.

As for the ragweed, maybe not on the reaction.  I think we should always start with the lowest dose possible.  Like JSNM says, most of these studies were done on 250 lb men.  What if you are a 125 lb. woman?

I'd like to be a 125 lb woman.  Must diet!

OK, if we have a greater chance of cancer - this is a good place to start with trying to avoid that.  Go to PubMed.org (.com) and just search 'milk thistle'  There are hundreds of articles mostly saying it helps kill cancer cells; particularly colon, uro-genatalia and prostate.  Damn, I'm glad I'm on this.  Colon cancer in my family.

My RD said don't bother with milk thistle, but I take it anyway.  My husband takes it for his fatty liver disease.  I don't know if it's helping or not, but I still think it's worth taking, since the literature is very impressive.

Edited to add:  I stopped it for a while because I have seasonal allergies and I'm now on Allegra for that.  I'd really like to go back on the milk thistle but I think I'll have to wait a few more weeks.
Jesse882008-05-30 16:22:09Since taking Milk Thisle with my MTX, my red blood cells and hemoglobin have returned to normal! I was anemic for years. May be a coincidence, but at good one! My blood work is perfect now.Hi Less, long time no see!

Jesse - if you go to PubMed and search 'fatty liver' and 'milk thistle' there were a ton of studies.  I didn't bring them over, sorry.
