I do not presume to understand anything about RA, but, out of curiosity--how many of you had a bad case of mono?  The family friend that I just learned has RA also had a bad bout.  All I know is that I thought I had a sinus infection b/c I couldn't breathe, and I went to a walk in clinic, and the person looking at the results under the microscope (or bloodwork, or I don't even remember) called everyone around to look, because it was the worst case of mono she'd ever seen.  I was 22 at the time.  I got sores on the sides of my mouth, and my liver was messed up too.  Took me forever to recover, and I had low fevers for about a year afterward.

Edited to add: this bout came at a time in my life when I was graduating college, in a new relationship, moving to a new city, and not sleeping a lot.  Also, I had a bad pap smear during all of this, but all of them since have been fine.  Previously I had always been an 8 hours of sleep a night type of girl (and have been since)
KatieG2008-05-30 17:36:12I had a bad case in october and I swear I still think I am fighting it at times. Not only extreme fatigue but juust not feeling well.mine was exactlly 7 days after  my first remicade traetment and 3 weeks into mtxThat kind of shows that it could be unrelated, or the cause, or an effect!  Interesting nonetheless.  I had problems with my feet that was likely mild RA a year before I got mono.  They never figured out what it was and just treated with NSAIDs.Never have had mono....though two of my daughters have.

I've had mono

I had mono my senior year of highschool. It was the sickest I've ever been.
I had mono in high school, but not a bad case.I have had reactivated mono. OMG!! That was some horrible fatigue, I thought I was fatigued before, but man... that was the could not stay awake no matter what kind of fatigue. The kind I am use to is the yawn all day, feel sleepy and want to go to sleep, but can stay awake.

I had reactivated mono some time last year. I do not remember the first time I got it.

My doctor said probably my suppressed immune system caused mine to reactivate. I hope I do not reactivate it again... it was just plain awful!

Sorry, but what is mono?  Janie. Mono ^ Glandular Fever.

I had GF when I was 11 and then it came back in a mega stressful situation like yours, Katie. I was doing honours at uni, working two jobs, not sleeping, living off caffeine and sudafed, just working too hard. Then it took me 18 months to recover. After 6 months I had chronic fatigue syndrome, at 7 months I had reactive arthritis and then at 20 months I got dx with RA. My own thinking is that because my immune system was so run down when the mono reactivated, it caused the whole cause and effect of RA. Although there have been studies that show that Epstein Barr Virus (Mono) does not cause RA, but can be seen to influence development in genetically susceptible individuals. Then there are studies that refute that, so who can say?

_popupControl(); I had mono as a teen, my nephew who was dianosed with Jra at 3 also had Mono, which is really strange for one so young, but my sis said that was the Dx, right before he was Dx with Jra. I even asked the Rd about if their was a conection with having this when I was Dx, he said it wasn't. (his opinion) I have read others who thought it may be related.

neice had chronic mono.. she got it at least once ayear..

our older girl had it really bad in kindergarten. she was really sick for about 4 months

Ally and Jakie both had it last year.. they got it around easter and were both wiped out for 3 months or so.. I will keep my eyes on them.
Do viruses reactivate?  I didn't know that.  We all know that bacteria can - that's what becomes mycoplasma.

Must research - and Paperdoll - you are a prime example of how this progresses.

I had mono that turned into Epstein-Barr just prior to the RA.I was hospitalized with mono my senior year of high school.  I had mono in HS (30 yrs ago) also had scarlet fever when I was 5 or 6.   Not sure if it ties into RA or not since both were many years before RA hit, but could be some connection.
I had mono about 10 years ago.  Doesn't mono exist in your body all of the time and comes on when your resistance is down? I had mono for 1 year, treated then (age 16) with tetracycline (made my teeth go yellow, a very sexy look I can tell you
