Question neproxin | Arthritis Information

I have been taking percoset for pain which I get from pcp, I hate calling and asking for a refill and don't like that it is such a hard pain killer.  I have heard alot of people talking about neproxin, what is it, and is it over the counter?Naproxen is the generic name for Aleve, which is an over-the-counter (in the USA anyway) nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory. OH!!! Thank you, I kind of feel like an idiot now!reegie, maybe another alternative for you might be Tramadol (also know as Ultracet or Ultram, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tramadol).  It is not an opioid, but it is a strong medication and is available in an extended release version.  It is supposedly less of an addiction risk as well.  Just wanted to give you another option to discuss with your doc.Thank you.  I will do that.R,

You mentioned getting percocet from your pcp (primary care provider) -- you do see a rhuematologist don't you?
Yeah, I just am a little leary of my diagnosis.  I have excruiating pain in ankles, feet and knees.  no swelling.  all blood test are normal but positive and elevated rf.  he told me i had lymes 2 months ago, took all the meds for that and him and pcp now don't think that i ever had that.  normal ana. sed rate, mri. x-ray, ct scan and and bone scan.  he says that he is positive it is nothing else and so he prescribed plaquenil 2 weeks ago but i never filled the prescr. because i don't feel like i know for sure.  my father does have ra though.

oh, I didn't know about what you've been going through.  How long have you been having symptons?  Its upsetting to get a diagnosis of RA and then take meds if you've never had to before.

I was diagnosed 31 yrs ago when I was 25.  Really was a shock, I use to bike to work and had just bought a pair of cross country skiis.  Back then, there weren't as many drug options as there are now.  I think I first started on naprosyn (you had to have a prescription back then for them) and trilisate.  I took gold shots for awhile.  They stopped working, then I went on plaquenil and mtx, stopped the plaquenil.  About six years ago, I started on biologics, and currently take enbrel and mtx.

Don't let your fear keep you from taking steps to control the pain and inflammation.  Research the RA meds, ask questions here, look into omega 3's - fish oil or flax seed oil, which have anti inflammatory effects, warm pool therapy.

If I recall correctly, plaquenil may take a little while to kick in, so talk to your pcp or rheumy about something you can do or take now, to help w/your pain.  Good luck, hang in there, keep us updated.

I have had pain there for years, but I had worked on my feet for quite a few years so I am not sure if that was it or not, but since about nov.-dec. it started getting way worse.  Do you think that I need meds for inflammation when I don't have any swelling and all my tests are fine?  Your input is wonderful, thank you!!

the naprosen is for inflammation and pain.. I take another NSAID for it.. IF you have pain.. the cummulative affects of an NSAID truly help with that.  Take it the same time every day and after awhile you'll feel the improvement.

You are probably inflamed at the synovial points though not in a flare... I wasn't very much inflamed for about four years, then  WHAM!! flare hit and I was down for the count.  If you can get help before a flare.. I'd do it.

I was prescribed NSAIDS by my PCP, but he never referred me to a RD til I flared big.. and therefore I never took the NSAIDS the way they should be administered.  so, I didn't get the proper relief til now.

Talk to your RD about the NSAID (Aleve, naprosen) and ask about that.

good luck to you!!
Thank you!!Yay for NSAIDs, is what I say!  The only thing that has worked for me.  If you are not on any, try Aleve. It worked half as well, enough to get me out of excruciating pain.If you talk to your doc about naprosyn, or NSAIDs, and decide to take them consider they can be hard on the stomach.  After yearsssss, of taking naprosyn and trilisate and mtx pills, I had stomach problems.  You can protect your stomach by taking NSAIDs with food.  Also, stay upright for 30 minutes after taking NSAIDs, don't lie down.  Take care.
