I notice that many here who have RA also have other serious illness's. Can I ask if they are a direct result of medication or of the RA itself?

Cheers....Lyn I have graves disease , thryoid disease, and ra. I think my thyroid started all of my problems. I dont see any link to the medications. Hope that helps.

synthryoid, celebrex, mtx, folic acid, remicade, and darvocet.

Hi Lyn, I have RA, Osteoarthritis, osteopaenia/osteoporosis, Gastro oesophageal reflux disease, Fibromyalgia, sleep apnoea, glaucoma, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, Cushings syndrome, prediabetes, degenerative disc disease, osteochondritis (ribs).  Practically all have been caused by Prednisone, apart from Osteoarthritis and DDD, but the Dr has told me these have accelerated due to RA.  If I was an animal I would have been put down long ago.  hope this helps Janie. H I have  Cardiomyopathy, RA, OA, GERD, asthma, migrains, depression and BiPolar disrder..
I have had asthma , migraines amd BP since age 10 or so.

cariomyopathy seems to be a result of Coxsackie virus..  and I had the earliest  flare of RA about 10 years before the cardiomyopathy, but was only taking Indomethacin for it..

I see no connection between the meds and developing illness.. but I do see a relationship between all my conditions..

i have no other illness aside from the RAI have Fibromyalgia, along with RA.Is fibro an autoimmune disease?
Is fibro an autoimmune disease?
I don't believe it is otherwise it would be testable by a lab-based diagnosis. There are some things that are potentially visible by advanced tests, but they aren't used in diagnosis. This may eventually change but it isn't likely to impact on treatment which is still highly empirical in nature.
I'm just wondering because it seems like an awful lot of RA'ers have fibro too.   My RD told me that people with RA are more susceptable to getting another AI disease too. Some of my health issues are other auto immune diseases and some have been caused by long term steroid use and some have been caused by active RA and PsA.   LindyWhen my friend was being treated for lupus, her doctor told her if a person has one AI disease, they usually have two.

I have an autoimmune disease that defies a clear definition and diagnosis...little bit RA, lupus, but nothing clear cut.  I also have degenerative disc disease as the result of either RA or OA.  RD thinks is OA but the RA drugs really helped it so......?

I became totally deaf in my left ear a few years before being dx'd with this current disease.  It may have been the first showing of my current health problem but no one is really sure (autoimmune inner ear disease) and I'm hoping to keep my good ear.

That's the bummer of this whole thing.  There's still so much they don't know about cause and effect, relationships between different AI diseases and such.  So much to learn.
I have RA only -- I was healthy as a horse until the RA, and that's my only current problem. I guess that makes me lucky ....I have RA, Type 1 diabetes (autoimmune) and Hashimoto's disease.  I was told the same thing that many people who have AI diseases often have more than 1.  Hiking_galI have RA, Hypothyroidism and Hypopituitarism. My doc seems to think that my hypothyroidism and Hypopituitarism is secondary to my RA.I have HBP and RA only. HBP came way before and is very controlled.
I too was healthy as a horse one day- went to bed and RA knocked me on my ass overnight. Took me a couple of months but I kicked it right back in the ass, got up and I haven't missed a day of work since I returned late January. So take that RA!
This is making for some interesting, albeit disconcerting, reading!!
I must go trawl the Net to see if there are any stats somewhere.
Hmmmmmm.

Cheers.....Lyn
