Hospital Visit | Arthritis Information

Hi folks,  I haven't been around much for the last 10 days.  Just catching up on lots of your posts.

Last Monday I apparently woke up at 6:30 am with gastro and called in sick to work and called to make a Dr appt and talked to my mother on the phone.

I then spent 9 days in hospital on IV to try and balance my Calcium, Potassium and Phosphate

Now, I have IBS, so they don't know what happened.  Were my levels depleted due to the chronic runs then the gastro just tipped me over the edge?  Or did I have such violent gastro that it sent me into a tailspin within 3 hours? Or was it food poisoning? I had recently started taking 15mg of oral pred, could that have set off weird blood levels?

I have to see my GP Thursday afternoon for follow-up blood tests and further investigation.  I also need to get myself a new GI specialist cause the one I have is a moron

The only bright spot was that they let me out for 4 hours on Saturday night so I could attend my own birthday party!

Needless to say I'm feeling a bit washed out... I was supposed to start my new permanent job on Tuesday, but won't be starting til next Tuesday.  I'm gonna take it easy for the next few days.  I think I've earned it.

Wow pammy, that's scary!  Thank God for your daughter and your doctor.  Sorry you had such a long hospital visit, but I'm glad they got things balanced out and hope they find you some answers soon. The weird part was that whenever they tried to give me fizzy oral potassium or phosphate I got more diarrhea and my levels dropped again.  They actually made things worse which is why I had to have the IV's all the time.  They had to start my IV's 6 times in the 9 days and I had to have blood drawn every morning (not counting the half a dozen times they took it while I was in the ER!  My veins suck at the best of times so I'm covered with bruises from blown attempts.  The ER nurse even went in between my baby and ring finger knuckles for one blood draw.   Now THAT hurt!!!!!!!!!!
I'm really looking forward to having more blood drawn tomorrow....NOT!!!!!!

Hi Pam , that must have been scary after you knew what was going on. Dehydration from low electrolytes can cause confusion, my son had gastro a few years back and almost went into a coma. Im glad you are home and that you were allowed out for your birthday ( Happy belated birthday), When gastro sets in it can rapidly make you very ill if its not treated straight away. When we lived in South Africa because of the heat causing problems gastro was a real problem and the doctors took it very seriously. I hope you get the cause sorted out soon.

Hugs
Lisa x

OMG, it hurt just to read that!

I'm surprised they didn't give you a PICC line.  When I was in for 9 days with my burst appendix, after the 3rd IV change they gave me a PICC.

Doesn't it all just want to make you get a valve permanently installed somewhere so they can just hook up to that? Oh yeah.   I'd love them to just pop in a little plug hole they can use whenever they need toPammy, glad you're out and feeling better.  That's crazy that you don't remeber doing any of that stuff.  Glad you had the presence of mind to call the doc and your daughter, even though you don't remember it.  Happy Birthday :)

Innerglow, I think you can still whine about your injections.  They sound pretty awful too.  So whine away!!
Hi Pammy, Jeesh, when you do it, you do it big time!!!!!!  Rest now and try and get your energy back for your new job.  I had IV potassium after my knee replacement and it hurt worse than my knee.  Hugs, LindyI'm so sorry!  Happy Belated Birthday!

Glad you are doing better now. Hope they find out the cause.

Good Luck with the new Job!
That must have been so scary!
Real glad that you are doing better .
OMG! Pammy, that's so scary. I'm sorry that happened but I'm real glad to hear you are home and doing better.  Whoa!  That sounds just awful.  I'm glad you're doing better now.  Give your daughter an extra hug.  She was at the right place and at the right time.

And a belated happy birthday too!

WoW! I didn't know gastro could be so severe!  Glad you are feeling better. What bad timing when you were ready to start a job!So glad you are okay, Pammy! How scarey that must have been, not knowing where you were or how you got there.

It's a good thing your daughter and doctor were both on top of things. That's quite a long hospital visit. And that blood draw sounds dreadful! I agree, that after so many failed I.V,'s, they should put in a plug of some sort.

Hope you get rested up and feeling better. Good luck  on your new job. And belated Happy Birthday!

Gentle hugs, Nini
So sorry Pammy, that is one scary-sounding hospital visit.  Belated Happy Birthday and good luck on the new job.  CathyWhat a brilliant time you have been having, ......................NOT..
This would have been a bit of a worry for all concerned but you are out now.

Look after your self, and I'd better look after myself as well in case this Aussie hospitalization thingy is catchy.

Cords and now you.
Well I saw my dr today and had another blood test.  Now to wait til Monday for the results.  I'm slowly feeling a bit more alert but am still tired.

I guess this is a lesson for everyone that we need to keep on top of things as far as our daily lives go.  Little things can blow out really quickly when we have chronic problems with meds  and blood levels always up to something fishy.   I never would have thought that a bout of gastro would do so much damage so quickly.

I'm going to start having a bit of fun with my birthday present....A brand new Canon digital SLR camera.  My brother in law bought the camera for me and I spent some 'birthday money' on an extra lens, a 70-300 zoom.  I have a lot of learning to do.

I actually sold a set of my native bird photos from my Etsy shop!  I'm looking forward to being able to get even better shots with my new toys!   My family indulges my hobby.

Thanks all for your concern.  It's nice to have somewhere to go when things get a bit wild and the family is stressed out of their minds.
