Pen vs. Syringe? | Arthritis Information

Hi, I've just started Humira (2 injections into treatment) and I hate the pens! They are so cumbersome and I can't see what is going on. Does anyone have any experience using regular syringes? I'm not squimish and am not afraid of injecting myself, but is it that much harder? Does anyone know?I've just strted using the pen and I love it's simplicity, I would find using a syringe difficult because of the arthritis in my hands.

I know for the syringe you have to up-end it and push until a drop of humira comes out of the needle (that's to expell any air). Then you insert the needle at a 45 degree angle and draw it back a little, if there's any blood you have to discard the syringe and start again, if no blood push the syringe so the Humira is injected and withdraw the needle still at the 45 degree angle.

With the pen you hold it against you at a 90 degree angle and push the purple button, job done. A whole lot quicker and a lot less bother in my mind.  But we're all different and if you prefer the syringe give it a try.

take care,
