Grrr.....just had one of those calls asking for money for the 'firefighters' (well, I think he was going to ask for money). BIL is a retired asst. chief, so we know most of that money goes to the fundraising business and not the firefighters, so I also cut them off, saying no.
And they never want to take 'no', and argue. Today, he said he wouldn't take a lot of my time, so I said I wouldn't take his, either, and the answer was no. Then he jumped all over me and said he was just calling to remind us to change the batteries in our smoke detector and save people's lives. He was so rude, and I know it was not a fireman.
Ours don't take batteries anyway. But I thanked him and hung up without saying that.
Just hang up, don't listen to them. They're intruding on your time. Anyway, it's a scam. LindyAround here it's the fraternal organization of police.

I had so much fun one time with a guy who called trying to raise money for some organization. I told him "I am so glad you called. I am selling tickets for a raffle for our Women's Club. Let me tell you about our club. I kept talking fast and promoting my fictional tickets, and he sputtered a couple of times and hung up. LOL Karen, my sister always does an Amway sales pitch for telemarketers. Hasn't has any takers which is good cuz she doesn't really sell it. Scares 'em off though. I don't think too many of these organizations are actually legit so you have to be careful. The ones that aren't legit usually hang up on me the minute I say no. Maimi you're right, they do act like they are your best friend and are real folksy until you say no then the tone changes completely. It stinks because these types of calls ruin it for the legitimate charities. HAHAHA! My FIL does that to those calls. It is soo FUNNY. My father used to say "will you take food stamps?"the national do not call list cuts way down on those types of calls..
I donated to some charity last year. They must have spread the word and gave out my phone number to every charity you can think of. If I had given money to all of the ones who called after that I'd be bankrupt. The fraternal order of police calls twice a day up to three times a week. That is why I look at my caller id now before answering the phone. If the caller id says it's them, unknown name and number, or unavailable I let it ring.
